Here are some more comparison shots between the essential and some of my other phones, truly awesome how large of screen they were able to fit in there.

Uploaded these to flickr. Camera not as good as my iPhone 7 or GS7, but it seems fine. Not bad enough to be a deal breaker for me.

Yeah, Ive had that. It just randomly happens then goes away. Ive also had this weird thing happen where it'll register my taps 2 spaces down, so if i click the top link it register me tapping the 3rd link. These weird glitches are temporary and fix themselves after a little bit.

Stock camera app, all shots set to auto and just quick shots i took while i was up there. I was planning on installing the google camera, but for now it seems the stock camera is good enough for me, haven't run into any of the freezing issues others have mentioned.

Benchmarks for those that are curious.

Thanks for all this. Good stuff.

So. Million (or $700) dollar question: why this over a Pixel 2? All things being equal, I'd opt for Essential. But between software and camera it seems things aren't equal.

For me it's because I prefer the size. Rumors point towards the smaller pixel sticking with last year's design. So for me it's between the S8, small Pixel, and the Essential (only flagships in this size range). Between those I pick the essential, at least until we know for sure what's in the small Pixel.

Makes sense. I'm completely size agnostic. As long as the screen is 5.5" or better, I'm good. Don't care about bezels, one-handed use, etc.

I just don’t understand why the Essential phone and Pixel didn’t include some hardware specs that every flagship phone has had for the last couple years. I guess they’re hoping software will out weigh it?

What will be the price of the pixel or Xl second generations though. Way too much bezel on this first ones too.

I don't know. I'm not too concerned about price though. Or bezels. I gave up on one handed use a long time ago, so I don't really get the obsession with bezel-less devices.

I rather not feel I have an additional body part on my person when a smartphone is in my pocket (ie. IPhone Plus). Screen to body ratio has become a biggie for me.

Price? Too many upcoming contenders regardless but this one needs to be cheaper for it being an ultimate keeper.

IPhones, Note 8, LG v30, Nokia 8, Hauwei Mate 10, etc. etc.

Now in fairness chances are the PH-1 will actually be the cheapest from the flagships, perhaps with the exception of the Nokia 8 which isn't really quite up there with the rest, in my opinion, having more of a 2016 design.

I'm disappointed about the camera though, reason enough not to buy it. Shame, I really liked their idea.

I mean, I just want the wallpapers off it and I'd be happy. Love a good stock wallpaper.

Thanks man!
I checked this out earlier - but they're all low res. :(
Well, the ones I wanted were anyway.
Oh, sorry about that. Are these ones also too low res for what you wanted?

PS: nevermind, I think they're the same. Perhaps a kind soul with the PH-1 can lift them from the device.

PPS: on the PC (not on the phone) I can actually zoom into the technobuffalo ones. The red (default) wallpaper is 1200x1250, which isn't terrible.

Yeah, they look blurry on my phone. Even the article says that they're pretty low res.

Thanks though. :)

Tried looking for the directory, couldn't find the original files. Do you how to find them?

Really loving this phone right now, have all my files and apps installed and this thing still flies. Any hiccups I've seen seem more to do with software not being optimized and not hardware related. The size is great and I love that I still get a large screen.

Weird thing though, this has gotten me more hyped about the iPhone 8, I guess it's because I'm loving this form factor and the iPhone will match it plus add a killer camera. Either way, I think I'm going to be all set with the iPhone 8 and Essential Phone combo.

Yeah but it will run iOS, a very limited OS with practically no customisation and where nearly everything you do requires more taps and swipes :p

I hear their wireless charging solution will be proprietary as well, lmao. Soon you won't be able to plug the damn thing in, unless it's an Apple-approved electricity company and they get a dime every time you charge it!

It's the one phone I'm not excited about at all. Wouldn't get one for $200, much less the exorbitant price they'll probably charge.

Even the V30 has piqued my interest, and I'm not an LG fan, with the 1.6 aperture camera and the fancy headphone amp.

I don't care that Apple will use proprietary charging for its new phone. I care that according to reports they'll be using a slower wireless charging standard. This underlines my problem with the new iPhone: gimping features just to offer a new form factor.

My problem is they are making it proprietary AND slower....in the past Apple would make this proprietary and somewhat or arguably better. If rumors hold true for IP8 wireless charging then they are using slower technology JUST to make it proprietary to make more money on accessories.

This is concerning due to the sheer sales volume of iPhones many establishments will adopt Apple’s wireless charging protocols and probably no one else’s.

Charging mats and pads in airports and shops will be iPhone only. Laaaaammmeee!!!

Proprietary solutions don't necessarily bother me. Sure, I wish I didn't have to have lightening cables and USB-C around my house but no one asked me to hop smartphone OS's every few minutes. ;) I an also live with spending more on Apple accessories. But slower? F*ck that. As it is Apple has watched the entire industry blow past it on fast charging to the point that it's actually become a consideration for me between which device I want to use on a given day. If I have a long day, I opt against my iPhone 7 Plus because if I have a heavy day it takes forever to re-charge vs the Galaxy S8 Plus.

I'm open to Apple surprising the hell out of me next week but I suspect the the new iPhone will probably be gorgeous but gimped while Apple figures out how to service the new form factor. To quote my own sage and eloquent words: f*ck that.

You should put the G6 in that list as well, hell of a phone and on the smaller side like you prefer. Between the 3 you mentioned and the G6, personally I'd pick the G6 all day long. But I'm a big phone kind of guy so wouldn't get any of them.

Checked BB today for a demo, nada. Sprint store was going to call me when they got a demo, no call yet.

I am losing interest to purchase, just want to check one out at this point.

That actually interests me more than the ifix teardown.
Me too. It's not like I can repair my phone, even if I bought all the tools they use I just don't have the skill or interest to do so.

But if the phone is super-tough and well built, that's something of note.
