Between the Note 8, S8+, iPhone 7+, Essential, and OnePlus 5, this reviewer said the Essential phone was super bland and boring, and had by far the worst slowest performance of all five of these flagship devices.

I thought the Essential running stock Android would smoke those other phones.

Yeah, I saw that. Wonder if there is something going on with his unit, not been my experience at all. This phone has been faster than the S8 and Pixel I have had this year. Not faster than my iPhone.

Also my benchmarks are higher than his, I got 174,000 antutu, much higher than his 125,000. My geekbench was also slightly higher at 1926/6557 to his 1904/5992.

Speed tests are garbage anyway. Most reviewers have said it runs fast. Performance isn't an issue with this device.

With benchmarks, I tend to agree with you, but in regards to that video, that’s pretty real world usage of opening and closing apps.

Eh. Real world usage is daily usage. No idea what he's done with the phones prior to the video. And anything can happen to a phone running in a given moment. It's purely anecdotal and not really useful.

Good points on the video I posted. Plus that guy and his site is major iMasterbation to Apple, that dude creams his pants over Apple, so the Essential phone on his site won't get a fair shake anyways

Except he prefers Android devices and uses them as his daily drivers.

No way, not that iDude. He's the biggest Apple butt licker I've ever seen on the internet. He is NOT an Android fan. He never shows interest in the awesome cool Nexus / Pixel phones, and trashed the Essential running stock Android

Anyone that would pick an iPhone over a Pixel XL has a few screws loose and not a true tech geek.

lulz.

You can make all the gross ANALogies you like, but if you’re talking about the PhoneBuff speed test guy, what I said stands. He’s repeatedly said he prefers Android and his daily driver was a Pixel, I believe, though it’s been a while since I’ve seen that video.

By the way, I’ve rarely seen him state his personal preferences. He mainly just runs the side by side speed tests and lets the results speak for themselves.

' Everythingapplepro ' is a total iYouTube channel. The dudes a [H]ardcore Apple guy.

His channel is 99% Apple related product discussion, and might have an Android on here and there just to compare to the iPhone.

Mea culpa. I thought that was a PhoneBuff video. All of the hullabaloo was for naught.

Essential Phone Review
http://www.droid-life.com/2017/09/08/essential-phone-review/

[H]ardcore Android reviewer here, he wanted to love this phone, but says it's more of a OnePlus 5 type of device, and not a true flagship.

" In our Essential Phone review, well, we're a bit emotional. You see, this is the phone I wanted to want. It's the phone I've been looking forward to the most. The combination of premium materials (titanium and ceramic) and clean software (stock, bare bones Android) is a combination I've been waiting years for someone to put together.

The problem here is that the camera experience is just not good enough at the moment and poor software performance has been frustrating to deal with. Those two things can probably be improved, but how long should we wait with this $700 device? It better not be long
. "

Probably covered here already but found it interesting that according to Gsmarena, the Essential Phone and IPx are very close in physical dimensions.

As for the Essential, my carrier store in Canada didn’t have it yet today like they were suppose to, so I could try it out, and like the above review, I am betting I’d be exactly in the same boat; loving the ultra premium hardware, the simplicity of the design, and the uniqueness and exclusivity of the phone...and of course the size. I can get past the lack of IP68, and of wireless charging. Changing camera apps appears to do the trick with the camera, but still not a top class photo taker...I can maybe be ok with that. I’m not a fan of pure pure Android, but if it was ultrafast and bulletproof I could get on board, but in the above review it’s missing touches all over the place, and that’s unforgivable.

Add it all up and at the price, there’s no way to justify all those shortcomings along with buggy software, never mind the unknown with a new company and support.
But the size, materials and exclusivity will still have me interested, more so again when I get to play around with one. I’d say wait for the second version, but that’s assuming there will be one, and my guess is if there is, the premium materials used in this one will be downgraded as part of the changes for the second version.

If nothing else, the physical size has me interested, as reviewers say it feels perfect in the hand.A and that the IPx has the same dimensions. Having a Note 5 the last two years I’ve wanted something smaller. Flirted with the IP7 for a couple weeks, and have an IPad Pro so the ecosystem change wouldn’t be a big change, but there are a lot of things I like in Googles ecosystem as well. And now the IPx/Essential may be that perfect size. The V30 is right up there as a phone that checks all boxes, and a touch smaller than the Note 5.

If money was no object I’d get the IPx for the Oled, the Apple ecosystem, and the sweet spot size, and a Note 8 as a second phone/line for when I want the full big screen experience. Money is an object if you’re outright buying two top end phones, so it’s a matter of which compromises I make.

Tuesday may help finalize that decision, but however it goes, as much as I’d like it to work, I just don’t see the Essential besting the Note 8,or V30, or even the S8 (size) on the Android side as my main phone nor the Note 5 (which is still an admirable beast after two full years, minus battery life) as my secondary Android Phone if I make the switch to IPhoneX as my daily driver.

My local Best Buy has an essential out on display. I must say, that phone is incredibly impressive to see in person.

Not at my local store yet, not one on display at local Sprint corporate store either.

No biggie, I want to check it out and since I have waited this long already .....

Took all my strength not to pick one up today. As expected, gorgeous. A little more slippery than I thought, but the carrier had a case for it too if required. As I figured, the ideal size for one handed use for me. Screen is fantastic too. No camera bump.

Took pics with it and my Note 5, and in artificial light inside a store of taking shots of other phones, I don’t see a major difference between the two. It didn’t seem to take any longer to fire off snaps. Thankfully the double tap of the power button bring up the camera, and again, not slow at all. There was an firmware update notification too, the one that had the HDR update, but the unit wasn’t on wifi for some reason anymore.
But in the 5 mins playing with it, don’t notice any severe usability issues with the OS or camera. So that’s great.

Then wandered back over to the Note 8 again and remembered why I have had a Note 2, 4 and 5. Totally different software experience but things in there that I’ve come to appreciate and know they aren’t on the Essential OS. But, that size is just too much I still think for what I want in my next phone.

So no further along in the decision making process, as Tuesday’s IPx details will help form that. But a good initial in store experience with the Essential Phone, can confirm how good it felt in the hand and to use it one handed, and no major glitches in the stock OS, like a few reviewers have had, and camera looked fine to me.

Still may pick up the Essential outright and give it a spin for 15 days at least. Regardless, with the IPx also being that same size, as per my above essay yesterday, my next main phone (or one of them) will be that size.

Yeah, I love the size of mine too, main reason I'm keeping it because I can't think of a phone I would prefer at this size.

Can't wait for the iPhone either, I love this form factor.

Best Buy expected to ship date has slipped again. Does this company want to sell this smartphone or not, how hard can it be to get into some suppliers hands? Sprint does not even have it yet.

Ceramic back coming off
[doublepost=1505067856][/doublepost]It may seem like I am always knocking this phone, but that's because I was super pumped for a stock Android phone created by the Android godfather Rubin. And then the specs came out, and Iw as like MEH, really :( And charging flagship pricing for more of a OnePlus 5 type phone.

- OLED display would be way nicer
- 3,500mAh beefy battery would have been so much better
- IP68 certified is what 2017 flagships have, want it or not, it's standard on new flagships
- Wireless charging, again what a 2017 flagship has.

Those 4 things would have made me buy this phone, on preorder, but he skimped out on features, and still charging flagship prices, and now all these quality control issues.

Yes, you mentioned these things many, many times. I don't think we care about them anywhere as much as you do, given that few people care about a specific battery capacity (when the Essential Phone by all accounts seems to have excellent battery life), IP68 water resistance, OLED screens (nice to have but hasn't stopped Apple from selling boat-loads of LCD phones) and wireless charging (which I had, sounds nice on paper and in reality sucks).

And I don't understand though why you stop at 3500mAh. Surely 3600mAh is better? Why not 4200mAh? In fact, why not 500Ah? I demand a phone with a 500Ah battery darn it, how dare those manufacturers not make it. And it better not weigh 148lbs.

As for manufacturing defects, I think all producers (including Apple) have them. My very own $3000 Macbook Pro has a poorly assembled power/fingerprint reader button, the keyboard makes wildly uneven noises depending what you hit, one of the USB-C connector is loose, and the power brick died shortly after buying it. I don't see people running with pitchforks.

If anything, it seems that manufacturing is an extremely strong point for the Essential phone, with the main and seemingly only negatives being the camera (particularly the app) and the mediocre display outdoor brightness.

Well the iPhone 8 keynote was a big disappointment for me..... I saw nothing that Apple is doing better then the rest of the industry. The iPhone X is behind the curve in my mind with no touch ID and a lackluster implementation of facial recognition. I saw nothing that would make face ID more usable then other facial recognition tech (don't get me started on the"flood light" in order to have the tech work in the dark). Maybe a bit more secure but that's about it. I'll reserve final judgment for reviews but disappointed with the information available so far.

I was hoping for 120hz refresh rate displays at least. The iPhone 8 costs $50 more the normal and now matches the essential phone in price but with no edge to edge display and no titanium and ceramic build. Granted the iPhone will likely take much better pictures, wireless charging, and water resistant.

All that said, I think I am still on track to purchase the pure white Essential Phone once Essential is ready.
