I saw it today on display at Sprint, no way I would personally pay $699 for it.

It was not even set up, I had to do it. No sim either and I had to use my smartphone as a hotspot. Geez, guess they are not taking this one seriously.

I guess they are essentially(sorry couldn't help myself) following Essential's lead on this phone ;-)
The hardware looks great but the software is still in beta imho. Then the company as a whole is a train wreck and they need to hire a new customer service company

Carrier stores increasingly are miserable about anything not Samsung or Apple.

Well, I'm back with my essential phone after messing with the Note 8 over the weekend. I could've kept it longer, but I just missed this form factor too much. Don't get me wrong, the Note is a fabulous device, the camera was killer, video recording super smooth, and that zoom lens with ois is almost unreal. Not to mention the screen and spen, but at the end of day, I just wasn't that comfortable with the super tall form factor, and the one thing I hated about last year's note (the thinner spen) has returned which made the spen less enjoyable to use, IMO.

So now I'm back, a little more appreciative of this form factor and thinking how awesome it would be to have a classic spen with this ultra flat form factor and hoping those updates come fast (supposedly Oreo within 2 months, swipe finger print sensor for notification bar soon, plus more camera updates.)

You're killing me man...everytime I think I have my mind made up, I flip flop after reading your experiences back and forth the past week or so.

Was thinking of trying out the Note 8 tomorrow, against my better judgement, if even just for a few days to try it, and return it, to contemplate my next move. Everytime I play with it in a store though this past week or two, i stop after a few minutes, and quite easily tell myself it's just too big for what I really want, as I fairly firmly want nothing larger that what I've had for the last 2 years (Note 5). For pants pocket-ability certainly, and then one/one and a half handed use, it can't be done with such a tall device (and I have bigger hands).

But the screen, the great camera with zoom and OIS, the RAM, the good reviews, etc etc suck me back in as decent upgrades over what I have. And, I've had a Note 4 and 5, and I know that what Samsung brings to the table for hardware and software has served me well these past 3 years...and, is all familiar, comfortable, and has features that i'd miss if I left the Samsung series. My Note is great, but battery life is taking a bit recently, and it's hard to believe I've gone two years with the same phone, but I have, and really appreciate it, so any change has to be worth it.

I've also had the same thoughts about the trying out the Essential (though the Samsung is easier to buy and return via BestBuy, Essential would have to be through the carrier). The spot on size of course as the main draw, the feel (though a bit less glassy and more ceramic-y would be my preference) and the uniqueness all appeal to me.

But then all the QC issues from the speaker grill, to the camera (fixable or not with GCam), to the software glitches, and then the support network, have me wondering if I can really make this my day to day driver and if its really better than the Note 5 I have, factoring in any hardware or software issues if one becomes feeling like a beta tester. And its a startup so there are some times where patience is likely to be required, but really, when paying the price for these phones, should there be? As compared to the Note 5, it will have better performance wise on paper. Size wise for sure...LCD screen, I'd have to see. I had a HTC M7 and loved the SLCD screen, but go back to Amoled and one misses that as well. The spartan software experience I'd have to get used to again (had a Nexus 7 tablet).

And, to complicate things even more the realization that the IPx is going to be the same form factor size wise as the Essential, and have an Amoled screen with the Apple ecosystem and all the top end features, for basically the same price as the Note 8 outright. But, its two months or more until the IPx.

Like you, I know the Note 8 is going to be a bit too big for what I want, but I like everything else about it, and trust Samsung and am familiar with a lot of things when upgrading...so trying it out is me wanting to make it work, but knowing I wont. The Essential has a lot going for it, and importantly, has the ideal size, and screen size, but there are a lot of other question marks that aren't there with the Note. So I am guessing in a few days testing it out, it may well work out exactly as I hope, with no issues, and if so, I'll however still have lingering doubts in my head whether it will stand the test of time, or if all us owners are going to run into issues in a week/month or 6 months, that will leave us "stranded" in a way that a Samsung or Apple wouldn't, being a brand new situation and company.,

And all this is analysis without considering financial cost. If the Essential was a few hundred cheaper, I'd almost crazily, consider both. But I can't do that, both $ wise, and especially when I do also think about finally making a (semi) jump over to an Iphone/Mac, as I've really become smitten with my IPP 10.5, using it for an hour or so at least each day, and then become integrated into the Apple Ecosystem as well for Imessage and being consistent across the tablet, phone, and laptop. My thought would be to keep an Android phone on a second line to keep my foot in the Google Eco system, and have the Iphone (probably X) into the aforementioned Apple Ecosystem.

If I do that switch and it goes well, it's probably best to just keep my Note 5, saving me a fair bit of $ then a new Iphone and a 2 month old (in 2 months) Android phone...but resisting every urge not to try out one of these new Android phones, having been with Android now for 6 years, before the IPx drops (that will probably also include the V30).

Anyways, look forward to hearing your experiences with the Essential.

Well, I hope I can help more than confuse you, but this next news probably won't help. I recently got an S8 Active as BOGO with the Note 8 I got for my wife, and man it is really nice and the S8 really feels much better than the regular S8 because this has a flat display.

So now I'm torn between this and the Essential. I still like the design and in hand feel of the Essential better, but the active is also a lot more durable with a much better camera. I'll also get better support because this is an at&t device. Had I got this phone before the Essential phone, I would've just stuck with the active, especially since I got it free.

I'm currently out of my return window with my Essential, so I'm just going to use it as my backup work phone for now while they get their software together and issue updates, and maybe use it on the weekends when I have less work.

Or maybe the iPhone will become my backup device instead and I'll carry around 2 androids.

Man, I don't know how you stand to carry two phones with you, let alone 3...

I only carry 2 phone, one personal and one business. A lot of the times while I work, I'll leave my personal phone in the car, which is why I'm excited about the Apple watch with LTE as I'll still be able to get my imessages and phone calls. When I'm not working, I'm still on call so I will still have both phones with me, but will then generally leave my work phone in the car if I'm out anywhere, I'm using Google voice for my voicemail so if anyone leaves me a message I'll still get it on my iPhone.

I do like keeping my personal and business info separate, so this works for me and allows me to mess around with android, if I only had one phone it would have to be the iPhone because of the ecosystem, but man would I get bored having only iOS.

I really want the Essential.
Lol, I thikn I post "i really want the <insert phone>" in basically every new released devive thread :p. But I actually do really want this.
That screen is just gorgeous and I love the stock Pixel look it has.

Alas, I've made a decision to not change my phone this year - lets see how long it lasts though. I am very happy with my XZ Premium and these newer Android devices are not really giving me anything else above what I have, other than a different design. If the XZp was slow, or laggy or had a bad screen or I was off the design, I'd look to change. But I can't actually fault it, it has been my favourite phone in a long time.

Like I say, see how long it lasts as I would love the iPhone X, but it just really isn't affordable for me right now, nor will it be for a long time.

I think the XZ Premium is a very capable premium phone. I have a close family member who has one and he's over the moon with it - in particular, he's interested in photography and took some wonderful shots with it.

No other phone, including the X, will give you anything more of substance. Some bells and whistles, yes, but in terms of general experience, no way. You got solid processing speed, the UI is fluid (I tried it), the screen is very good, the camera is great, the battery life I think has always been very good on their flagship line. Unless you have "upgraditis" you don't need another one :)

Plus, I think both FaceID and the big notch on the X are design failures that will surely impact the usability, and it's just not worth so much money, unless for you money is no object. I could buy at least 50 of them with what I have in my current account and I'd hesitate to get even one.

Yeah absolutely.
I have done this to myself before and bought a new phone I like the look of, only to regret it and want to go back to the one I used to have that's then been sold on. Don't really want to do that again.

The XZ Premium just does everything fantastically well (for me). I even adore the design, which is a negative for a lot of others, and I get why.
The camera is fast, reliable and produces fantastic shots, battery life easily gets me through the day, I think it has the best screen of any smartphone I've ever used. 4K content is available and due to its 4k screen it just looks incredible.

Been so pleased with it.
I also love the fact I can stream my PS4 via remote play to it, which works really well with arcadey games and any game that doesn't necessarily need a huge 4k TV to benefit the player. I've used that a lot and even bought the official phone holder for the controller! I know other Android's can have the feature but it's simple and quick on my XZp.

Anyway, I'm hijacking the thread (sorry) but yeah, unless I win the lottery I am aiming to stick with what I have. Even if I do dream of the Essential!

Are there any glaring software glitches that still exist?

The current price of the iPhone X as well as the rumored pricing of the Pixel 2 XL have got me shopping around, and I want my next phone (which will be my daily driver for probably 2+ years) to be pretty solid. I don't want to end up losing my money, per se.

Ha, joke is on you. S8 Active isn’t available here in Canada! I will keep my eyes out for it though, as the rough and tumble nature of it may be useful, nevermind the bigger battery without any performance compromises. But, we never get Bogo offers from carriers up here, and sounds as if the regular pricing of the S8A is more then the S8, so if it ever came here, would be tough to justify spending more then the S8.

To be perfectly fair, if I needed an Android phone right now, and certainly a Samsung phone, it’d be the S8. I’ve tried the Note a few times in the past two days, and as I did before, over and over,p I think it’s just too big for what I want from a daily driver that I carry around on me all day. The S8 has the size reduction I want, and all the Samsung features. Held out from getting it at launch for the Note 8 because of knowing the better dual camera and the upgrade in overall specs over th S series. And the S8 still may be an option.

I’ve now ended up getting a second line on a 3 month prepaid plan, so now I just need a second phone to go with it. Today’s thinking (which may change tomorrow or tonight) is to get an IPhone 7 or 8, and use it as a daily driver the next couple months (or less if it’s really really not for me) to get a good long look at Ios and integrating it with my IPad and maybe a Mac. Then put my Android phone (current Note 5 most likely) on the new 2nd line to keep in the Google ecosystem, mostly for data, and the way they handle notifications and then features such as Google Driving etc. Maybe use it as a hotspot too more for the kid when out, for her
IPad. Of course my next decision there is a 7,7+8 or 8+. Sizeof th regular one, which I have been harping about, vs camera much better on the +. As for 7 vs 8,it’s latest and greatest vs a cost saving, though I prefer the aluminum back to glass, I also think more than 32gb of storage would be ideal.

If the Apple ecosystem thing works over the next 3 months, contemplate the IPx depending on reviews etc , and then the 7 or 8 I get now, goes to the wife then, who is still on a IP6 now. At that point too I’ll know enough about if I want to ditch Android in general, or keep it, and/or renew my 2nd line or not to keep both platforms active.

Its really good when its right, but it will randomly freeze and hang every now and then. Not happening enough to bother me, but it does happen.

Also having an issue with Bluetooth right now. Other than those two things, I have not seen any wonky with the software, other than the camera app of course.

Honestly I still really like the essential phone, just surprised how much I like this s8 active, since I really didn't like the regular s8 and the Note was just too big (tall).

It's a form vs function right now, and what makes it harder is that there are no cases for the essential phone. And while I hate using cases, I feel better to at least have one to use while at work.

Also, I thought there was an international variant of the active? But yeah, if not for the BOGO I wouldn't have gotten it, sucks you don't get the same deals, do you still have to get 3 year contracts?

As for the iPhone's, don't know about the 8's, but with the 7's I had both the regular and plus models, and camera wise the regular 7 is actually a little better in most cases. The only area the plus is better is zooming and portrait mode, but everything else the smaller 7 did a slightly better job.

Good luck, but it sounds like it might be best to the wife her iPhone and you just take it out for a test run for a couple months while you decide in the X vs android, but if you do think on getting the S8, unless you can get a really good deal, the S9 is right around the corner in feb-march.

Yeah we will see. 2 year contracts are the max here now. No IPhone Trade Up program, it’s all a carrier subsidy as part of the monthly plan. Two tiered for most carriers, so pay $10 less per month over the 2y, but pay more up front. But nothing more then that yet, we don’t have any creative carriers like T Mobile which forces the others to try and follow suit. Topic for another day.

Most anything that works on ATT is the same model that comes up here for most phones. But no carrier carries has the S8 Active yet. In theory on my next trip down there I could get one outright and then unlock it, and it would work fine here. With the exchange rate and stronger Canadian dollar, there is a savings over what
Ie an IPhone X should work out to about $1250 or so Cad,given current rates, Apple is listing it at $1329.

Essential has dropped $90 on contract already here, and the one carrier that has it is offering a $200 trade in credit on anything newish if you renew or new activation. I’m in neither boat given the legacy plan I have is $25less per month and gives me more than the plan I’d be forced to move to to get that pricing.

Good info about the Active, something to keep in mind down the road as I would’ve dismissed that in the past, but the flat screen makes a difference.

The ecosystem is the driving factor for Apple. Most friends on IMessage and in the months of using my IPad, gotten appreciative of how it and everything else in the OS just works and how apps are better optimized. But my IP experience earlier in the year was great, it’s just the screen and Apple hardware that felt a half step back and the some other Android things that I couldn’t justify the cost of a new full price IPhone. Going down this road again, it still may not be, but with the X filling the hardware gap with Amoeld, it’s a much different situation. And I’d have a plan to have the hardware purchased now, move on the wife as she’s due for an upgrade by the end of the year.

Sigh, well this slightly pains me, but the phone is going back. I was having Bluetooth problems and I was one that had a defective earpiece, so rather than try to exchange it I'm just going to return it.

I do plan on purchasing it again down the road, hopefully after some software updates, after they've gotten all the kinks out of the manufacturing, and hopefully some cases are available. Maybe a good discount.

Don't get me wrong, I loved this phone, but it's hard to beat free, and my S8 active was free and serves its purpose better as my work phone. But man, even now as I type this on the essential, I'm having second thoughts, this phone just feels so good in hand. Here hoping for some good Christmas discounts and an Oreo for santa.

Maybe Essential will hit their stride with the second gen?

Only 5,000 units sold. Ouch

I guess I am not surprised for $700 this phone is way overpriced it's basically a OnePlus 5 spec phone with maybe you know better build quality okay I'll give him that but 700 bucks when a OnePlus 5 is $450. The Essential phone and the OnePlus 5 phone are extremely close in side by side specs

I knew this phone would be selling for $399 by the new year but at this rate they may just go out of business before then

I'm actually impressed they were able to get 5000 units into people's hands.

This phone was always going to be niche but boy oh boy did they do everything possible to limit even that limited market. Besides the CS issues, the next biggest sin is buggy software. You cannot, CANNOT offer stock Android that's less than flawless. There is zero margin for error with a stock Android phone that has no other compelling features. Build quality will only get you so far. People use their phones, they don't stare at the build quality all day.

Chances of a European / UK release looking very unlikely with those sales figures. :(
