People mentioning price are funny. When has ANY Apple product aside from the iPhone been priced close to competitors. No one has ever said Wow, look at how cheap that Macbook (or iMac or iPad) is compared to this plastic piece of crap laptop, Im gonna buy one! You want cheap? Buy Acer. I'll be selling my iPad mini for the new one first day its out.

Its really only the Mac Iines that are priced higher than the competition. Aside from nexus devices that have some degree of subsidy by Google / amazon kindle fire - prices are pretty in line.

That said I will not buy iOS until untethered jailbreak is released. Those full version windows tablets are looking good too. No idea how dell is selling the venue 8 for $300.

Their professional equipment hardware had always been fairly competitive when you compare it like for like. It has never been cheap, but it is in the ballpark.

Some of the new android tablets look great, for example, the Fire HDX. Good hardware, great price, and definitely give more bang for your buck than iPads.

But i'll be sticking with iPad because Android doesn't have the apps I need, and the iPad integrates with my iPhone, and iMac, which gives me a lot more incentive to use.

People are complaining about the price of the mini without acknowledging the fact that they made it's internal hardware equal to the 10" iPad, making the only difference between the two the screen size. If one wants a cheaper iPad, they can save $100 and get a previous gen model, which is still more than capable.

The A7 chip has been topping benchmark scores. It's going to be pretty awesome when developers make apps that utilize it.

Oh yeah, lets rip on Acer now. I am typing this on my Acer laptop, which I got last month. Has an aluminum body, backlit keyboard, 10 point 15.6 inch touchscreen, Quad core CPU, 1TB HD, 8GB RAM, USB 3.0 etc... All the bells and whistles. Know how much I paid??? $644, new... Considering the closest spec'ed MBP is $1999 without a touch screen, tell me how my Acer is a plastic piece of crap laptop again?

Who says I need to use Windows 8? We are not talking about an Apple mobile device here where we are stuck with one OS... I am currently dual booting Ubuntu, and plan to add Win 7 to the mix soon.

Google offers the same product for $229.

I agree. The new N7 is a steal for $229. Rivals the mini that's now $170 more. I honestly don't want iOS on my tablet, I like it on my phone. I love Android on tablets. I have no regrets getting the N7. It's powerful, portable and plenty of tablet for me. Having both platforms is the best, in my opinion.

Apple uses quality products from the keys in the keyboard to the hard drives. Most other companies do not and you are lucky to get 2 years from these cheap laptops. Ive had plenty of affordable laptops in the $400-$600 price range and they always crap out or need things replaced within a year or so. The old saying "you get what you pay for" comes to mind.

My HP dv7 from late 2008 is still going strong and is my primary laptop. It was about $1000 dollars but thats because I have the high res screen, the 2.53 ghz core 2 duo, the dedicated 9600m gt and a 7200rpm hard drive. It has two drive bays so I added a 120gb intel ssd a few years ago. So no, other companies machines are just fine. I have a macbook from the same time. It needed a logic board replacement last year. (wouldn't turn on at all) Luckily I know how to do that but it still costed me like 110 dollars to get the board on ebay and took time to install.

I think people are being ridiculous about the pricing. Lest you all forget, Apple makes their money almost exclusively from hardware sales. Most of their software is now free (iLife, iWork, Mavericks, iCloud, Photo Stream), and that's a big difference from Microsoft, for example. Google makes all their money from advertising, so they can afford to sell their products with zero profit margins. Apple can't.

And the Mini seems like far more expensive product to make. Bigger, higher resolution display, faster chip, twice the battery capacity of the Nexus 7, all tightly packed in a unibody aluminum chassis that's thinner than the Nexus 7. Quite the feat considering the battery size.

Apple makes money from the APP stores and subscription services. :)

I have no interest in the iPad mini at that price but will be picking up the iPad air. As much as I dislike iOS on a phone, it's fine for my needs on a tablet. I don't care about having all the same brand electronics or a certain ecosystem. I enjoy different experiences on different devices.

I feel the same way. My tablet needs simply aren't as demanding as my smartphone needs and so what shortcomings iOS has, they're tolerable on the iPad. And I, too, want a hand in both ecosystems. But alas, I am done with "large" iPads and will wait for 2014's iPad Mini w/ Retina Display. Hopefully, iOS 8 brings even more flexibility, an improved keyboard (so long overdue), and a bit more freedom. And by then, the iPad should also have Touch ID.

I can wait.

2014 will be a really interesting year iPhone-wise, too. I'm looking forward to that.

Isn't it supposed to have the same hardware just in a smaller size? Why do you have a problem paying for something smaller? I mean if you're looking for a smaller tablet that is.

Maybe people feel current generation specs is what should've came in the iPad Mini in the first place for its original price point: $329.

Now, we're finally getting the iPad Mini that should've been, but wait, we have to actually pay more for it -- a whole $70 dollars more from what is already a pretty high price point to begin with. It just doesn't feel right. It's a hell of a premium.

Then you factor in Apple's continued ludicrous pricing scheme for higher storage, where if I wanted to match my current Nexus 7's 32GB, I'd have to go up to a whopping $499 (ouch!), it just further turns me off.

Everyone will find different value and worth for their own hard earned money, of course. I'm speaking for myself.

I just prefer the larger size. :)

The price increase on the mini just made it an even easier decision.

Now if the mini were to had stay at 329, I'd have to think twice about it.

If I end up getting the nexus 5 I'm all the more inclined for the iPad mini 2014.

Just don't need two nexus devices.

I'd be lying if I said I'm not tempted to go back to iOS altogether, but...I've seen it from both sides now and genuinely enjoying Android at the moment.

Excited to see what the next version of Android has to offer :)

The only reason I am going to get a nexus 7 is b.c when I am at home and need to do light browsing I cannot use the nexus 4. I literally can watch the % drop by the minute. I will either get the n7 or the new Acer c720 chromebook.
