I dropped my phone on the first day. Been using a case most of the time ever since.. not really to protect it but to hide all the scratches/dings from the fall. :D

I know we all want to treat our phones well and keep them as nice as possible but you're bound to get scratches and dings on a device you carry around with you every single day. Once you finally get a couple scratches on the case, you'll treat it like a regular phone and not like a new born baby.

Yah, those people who are so anal about putting scratches on their phones should just keep them in their box and never use them. :D

On a serious note, I do like to keep my gear in good shape.

I've had three iphones (2g, 3g and 3gs) I used a case on the 2g, 3g and for a little while on the 3gs. I have also used a Invisbleshield on my 3g. For the last few months I have been using my 3Gs "naked". I tried to put a case on it a few days ago, but I really do prefer it "naked". It gets a little scratched, but no big deal. I have found a case make the phone too bulky. I guess I have gotten used to going "naked".

I've never had a case for mine. I keep it on its own in a pocket in my jeans and it still looks fine to me.

Maybe we should turn the question round and ask are you paranoid about having an iPhone with some light marks from use?

Lots of people want to keep their phone as new. I like to look after my gear and keep it in good condition, but if you keep it in a case what difference does it make? Having said that, some cases do protect your phone if you drop it. Either way, just enjoy it!

Naked since iDay and lovin it

I'd like to have it 'naked' but would rather, when I drop it, that a £10 cover gets broken and not my £350 still-well-within-an-18-month-contract iPhone. I want it in the best condition when the 4th gen iPhone comes out so I can put my 3GS on eBay and buy a BlackBerry to help with my disappointment.

No case here. For years I've always had a case. Also stuck with the Incase Sliders. However they did more damage than going naked. Right now I just use a wrapsol on the back because I hate fingerprints. On the front I use SGP anti-glare. Till thus day I couldn't be happier! Go caseless and stop being a "safety boy".

Haven't used a case in a year now. I keep it in my front pocket. Very, very minimal scratches, if any really. I stopped using them when an incase slider put more scratches on my iPhone from using the case, than carrying it around "naked".

In the end, it's a phone, not a piece of art. I like the way it looks\feels without a case, and by the time it DOES get beat up, the next model will be out, and it'll get replaced anyway. :D

mines been in a case since day one (sept of 08)

about a month ago i took it out to clean it....have not put the case back on since...

what a difference this makes...the phone is so much lighter and very slim

not one scratch since ive had it out of the case...

i actually gave the case away...

I've had 3 iPhones now and have never used a case. I don't really understand the point, as if you drop it, a case isn't going to stop it getting smashed. There are no scrapes on any of my iPhones other than normal bezel scratching which happens even with a case.

I much prefer it without a case but the risk of dropping it plus all of the scratches I figured if this happened it would ugly too so not worth the risk. Also if I drop it and want to replace it will mean paying full price so not cool with that. I bought the Otterbox Defender and problem solved.

I think the main worry that people(myself included) have about using a phone naked is that drops. I have had so many friends and family members drop their iPhones and crack the glass screens. I have been lucky enough to drop my iPhone with the case on plenty of times(2g and 3g) and haven't cracked a screen yet. So if anybody is worried about a cracked screen which is likely in my experience.....use a case.

When my dad brought home my first iPhone, he was taking it out of the box to plug it in and dropped it right as he opened the box. Lol. I have a 32gb
3GS now, the one he dropped was a 16gb 3GS.

I use an Incase slider and it does its job, however, I didn't know to clean it every few days so now it has some scratches on the back. Fail
on my part I guess.

I keep my iPhone in a case and have "iPhone OCD", but with good reason.

I bought my iPhone 3G in September 09 for £342 on O2 Pay & Go, so I'm not in the position of having a contract that will expire and if I've honoured it then I get a good upgrade to the newest iPhone as and when it comes out.

This iPhone is the iPhone I intend to own for the next 18 months, maybe longer ... who knows?

Since getting my iPhone replaced in December due to a cracked headphone socket, I have used the replacement in a Contour Flick case that I got for a bargain £5 at the HMV Christmas sale. A lot of people have moaned that this case scratches the phone, but I've removed my iPhone from it and put it back in after cleaning and the bezel and back are perfect ... and trust me, I've checked under numerous light conditions! :p

I used to own an Invisible Shield on the original iPhone I bought, so I still have strips of it left to use on the bottom of the bezel where the Flick doesn't cover.

Add to this the screen protector, and I'm good to go. The Flick doesn't add much bulk to the iPhone, and the feeling you get when taking it out for a clean or to simply use around the house, and seeing how pristine it is, is superb.

If I was on a contract and knew I would be able to upgrade at a lesser cost compared to Pay & Go, I wouldn't care ... but this is MY iPhone, not one taken out on debt and paid up over 12/18/24 months. Sue me if I want to keep it looking in as perfect condition as possible.

I ordered the Sedo black leather case along with my iPhone and I love it as it looks classy and it's very slim. I'd use my iPhone for a few days without a case if I had to, but longer term I want to do whatever I reasonably can to protect my iPhone considering how much I spent on it.

Honestly? Get over it. It's a phone at the end of the day, I haven't had a case on any Apply product in the last 6 years and it's fine.

I haven't had any Apply product, but I've had 11 or 12 MacBooks, MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros and they don't need a case. It would be sad to cover the beautiful design. However, I always used a sleeve with these portables.

I am on my second iPhone and it's not just extremely prone to scratches, but it is being used in a different manner from laptops. I dropped them a few times already and I am very careful. I also keep change, house keys, car keys in my pocket and it's just a matter of weeks before my phones and music players get several tiny scratches.

So, I think the iPhone deserves a case if you use it like me. But I think having a screen protector is even more important. Scratching is an aesthetic matter on the case, but on the screen, it affects usability. Besides, I use a matte protector (Power Support anti glare) and it makes the screen more visible in direct sunlight and it's nicer to touch it.

I truly recommend Incipio's cases. They fit really tight, they provide proper protection while being very light. The finish is nice and they have a soft, almost velvety surface. I have a black one, but I am thinking about going 'Lambo' with a yellow one.

I like shadecases. they are nice and slim. almost invisibleshield slim. Except rather then having to apply with water they slide on.

Yes. I can't stand my bezel having scratches. In fact, I make sure all parts of my phone is covered. Mild OCD yup.

I think the iPhone gets a bad rap about being fragile. It's a great phone. Maybe they could have used a slightly thicker or tougher glass but it's tough.

I think people focus on the incidents that break the iPhone because they are more memorable. For every drop that cracks the front glass there are countless "heart-in-your-throat" moments where the owner picked it up, brushed it off, and sighed a huge sign of release.
