Thank you for your kind words.

I will install Final Cut Pro just for fun and see what happens.
I'll first have to do a short youtube class though. But i will report back.

Just kidding. But I could install Adobe Premiere... is that similar?

I am sure you can replicate the issue in iMovie too. Just throw a couple of clips in a project and try to hover your mouse above them in the project's library.

Right, that's very similar to Final Cut Pro of course. I tried it. Tested my cam while at it.
Ladies and gentlemen, we got a popper! When move the cursor through the video, after a while it will start to pop every time I do this.
I tried the same in a Youtube vid and it also happens there but really erratically.

It's quite the gentle pop though. Unless this sounds happens while I am listening or recording in Logic Pro X, I wouldn't worry about it that much.
It sucks if you edit movies though.

Now the problem is how long we need to wait before Apple finally acknowledge this issue and release a fix.

It looks like they might be onto it - see this post from coreyjbatt:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250879269?answerId=250879269021&page=2

"I also mentioned the YouTube videos/threads and the advisor did reassure that they will be looking into this issue and get back to me within 4 days. He said that over time they will be either be developing a software update or creating a new replacement model depending on the findings by the engineering team."

All the way up? I never do that.. Is it only when people listen all the way up? Anyway, just tried that and nope, nothing. Yet, in any case. Maybe it will still happen.

Try listening to bass-heavy sections of music on YouTube - that usually makes the pops more noticeable I think.

I was astonished to hear that Early 2015 MBP also has this issue, because I have one but on Mojave. I didn't expect this issue could happen on that machine with Catalina. Things are becoming more and more severe now. I'm sure a lot of people have complained to Apple. Now the problem is how long we need to wait before Apple finally acknowledge this issue and release a fix.
Does it work OK under Mojave for you? I have a 2012 and FCP does seem to work fine...

Having this issue on my 16 inch MBP. The issue happens when skipping YouTube videos back/forward with "J" and "L" keys. It also happens when turning the volume up or down with the "volume feedback sound" enabled. Each time the sound plays, there's a pop.

Here's a video with sound (unmute the video!)

Interestingly, if I launch DaVinci Resolve, the issue stops happening. Resolve forces the discreet GPU to be used, which may be the reason.

It doesn't happen on external speakers at all.

Ive been looking through this forum about this issue.
It seems to me that this is a audio driver issue since the macbook has 2(the headphones and speakers) in older macbook you used to not be able to use both at the same time, now you can. so maybe its just a audio driver issue.

If its not that... then it could be a hardware issue due to them not understand or making there speakers correctly. Frequencies could be clashing. If you have a Kick and a Bass and they are the same frequency, usually there would be sidechain compression so that the bass's volume ducks down for the kick to come through. Ive heard portable speakers try to emulate or do this. It usually doesnt work. This could be the issue here....

Yes, everything is fine with 2015 MBP 13". That's why I was surprised when someone said it had this issue too. Actually, I access to one 2019 MBP 13", which does not have this issue, either. Of course, both machines are on Mojave.

I’m pretty sure the pop is the speakers shutting off while skimming through videos or music. An update that’ll keep them from shutting off right away after a second only should solve it

Yeah it sounds like that to me too. I could be playing anything at all and it will sound great. Yet the moment I stop/start playback of any sound, the pop happens.

Ive been looking through this forum about this issue.

I doubt it's frequencies clashing. If that was the case, you could play an .mp3 that has such frequencies and you would hear the pops, yet I'm pretty sure there is no sound that could cause these pops. The pops only happen when any sound is suddenly stopped or started.

Since the mere act of having DaVinci Resolve open in the background stops the issue from happening, it seems like it can easily be fixed in software.

Although there are only a few votes, we can confirm that this issue is widespread. It may not be as severe as the vote says, especially considering the survivorship bias, but we can infer with high confidence that many machines are affected.

As people are starting to receive their units, for the benefits of others, anyone went to Apple store please post/update your response from Apple. Thank you.

Please also submit your issues in the apple thread

I just got my new 16 inch MacBook Pro and I absolutely love it. However, after one day of usage, I noticed some crack sound while doing 5s forward watching a Youtube video. I don't know whether it is a software issue (Catalina related?) or hardware issue.

Attach is a 30s test sample. I keep press right arrow every one or two seconds while playing a YouTube video. I can clearly hear the crack sound, although not every time.

Anyone owning a 16 MBP could test yours? Thanks.

------------------------------------------
Update 1:

The same sound can be heard when you close a tab that is playing some video. This is easier to test.

-------------------------------------------
Update 2:

I tried the same using Chrome, and there seems no issue with fast-forwarding. But I did hear the same cracking sound when closing a tab that is playing a video.

-------------------------------------------
Update 3:

Someone posted on reddit, suggesting that this could be due to the aggressive shutdown of speakers. One walk around is playing some sound in background and turn the volume to minimum, then this pop sound goes away.
For the moment, you may want to add the temporary fix suggested at the link to your OP, since it appears some are missing it:

So I am running the latest build of Windows 10 (1909) on my 16" MBP via Bootcamp and do not hear the issue at all. The popping issue is very apparent while running the machine with the latest public version of Catalina. So it definitely seems like a software issue.

It only happened once and only on YouTube. Spotify, Logic, Netflix, Quicktime, Preview (Space key in Finder) are all fine.

Is anyone running Mojave experiencing the popping sound? If so, is this just for the Macbook Pro 16 or earlier models?

im not sure if its ableton 10 in catalina or just these speakers but i am having a weird experience with bass's or specifically sub bass. When im in ableton live it sometimes makes a clicking like an echo... its pretty terrible...

I just did start stop playback in Logic of a project im working on and its making a short higher pitched popping sound when starting/stopping and also a lower pitched oscillating crackling/popping sound that is constant but not as audible. It is noticeable and this comes and goes ive noticed. What is going on here? The speakers sound so great for a laptop, but this is a big issue. I like having a laptop for ease of use anywhere I go and the built in speakers are nice to actually for once not always needing to use headphones or external speakers for quick recordings and playbacks. For longer more serious sessions I dont use built in speakers, but for the price and capability of this thing it should not have this problem.
yeah i think we got the same bug but im in ableton.

BTW, in Boot Camp it is not reproducible in 95% cases. Only once I did hear it when furiously moved a youtube video slider.

So, I'm having trouble replicating this, but I believe it's a thing.

However, it's worth mentioning that some of the behavior needed to replicate this issue is pretty silly and most serious editors are going to use headphones anyway.

As great as the speakers are, i almost never use them. Headphones or monitor speakers. Still, the issue needs to be resolved.
