Live in the US. Googles cars have never made it to a rural area. Their maps can be off by miles. Apple gets their data from TomTom so it’s much more accurate. Google is great for city driving. Both are just as good as each other. It was a much bigger issue when Apple first released their maps app.
Ah that’ll be why then. Our little island is pretty well covered by Google and it’s more widely referred to as it’s cross platform.

I keep forgetting I even have Apple maps. It’s been hidden in my unused folder for about 5 years. I’m sure it’s improved since its release, but I’ve not needed it with google maps being available. I don’t know why they bothered with it in all honesty.

It’s difficult for you to make a fair evaluation if you don’t use Apple Maps. That said, others need to use what works for them, Apple Maps is excellent in my specific area and has not failed me. Google maps is great, but I don’t need it, but it does serve as my secondary. My experience is opposite of yours.

I would be interested in hearing your opinion on Apple Maps being that you have not used it for approximately five years. Not that you have a reason to, but you should try Apple Maps and just see what you think in comparison to Google maps. There certainly are major differences between the two, but I do have Google Maps as my back up, which has its advantages.

I'm very glad that the Galaxy S9 is doing well. Better camera, better display and a significantly lower price than the iPhone X is all good for us. The fact it costs less than even the S8 did a year before is a big deal. It will sell a great deal of units and put pressure on Apple to compete.

The S9+ already won the "Best new connected device" in the MWC this year so it's obvious it is being well received.

I’ll give it a go. I remember the navigation part had a nicer interface than google maps but the lack of street view when arriving at destinations was something I missed.

I don't read many reviews that aren't done by XDA but yea I imagine it'd review pretty well since they've been refining the HW and the SW for quite a few years now.

Apple allegedly folded their iOS 12 hand because it’s just a Snow Leopard update instead of narrowing the utility gap between iOS and Android.

The fact the latest Samsung is being well received means Apple needs to lift its game once again. & I love that.

There's no hate in me of any phone manufacturer, but instead respect for forcing competitors to keep upping the ante.

Apple needs to improve Siri more than anything imo, because Google Assistant's destroying it on many levels. Apple also needs to kill Maps. Just give me Google Maps in CarPlay & I'll be happy.

Respond, Apple!
Whether Apple ups their game or not isnt a concern for me. I dont use Apple iPhones. But yes, Siri is awful! Just one reason why i dont prefer iPhones.

I think Apple is doing just well. They know no one is touching the iPhone sales. As a consumer, we want massive updates every year, but that is just not reasonable. Most of the time, the technology is just not ready. Apple did well with the iPhone X - got rid of the home button & at the time had the best smartphone display according to numerous reports. The iPhone X (from a hardware perspective) put it on par with the other companies.

I wonder if the average Apple user is so concerned.

I told one of my coworkers about the iPhone 8/8+ and the iPhone X when they launched. She's always upgraded her Apple devices and a few months before had gotten an iPhone 7+.

The look on her face when I told her about the new phones was "So what." Verbally she told me "It's going to be a long time before I upgrade."

So, whatever Apple is offering it's not enough to cause someone with a three to four month old iPhone to ditch it for the newer ones. And she could afford to.

I have another coworker who a few months ago bought s Samsung S8 (I think). He has no plans to get the new Samsung phone. He's happy with his current one.

Personally, I don't think any of this matters as much to people as it does us here.
Without a doubt

The average user could care less what the new phones have

If they are used to iPhones they will continue to use iPhones it doesn’t matter what the new Samsung has feature wise.

My mum is still on the iPhone 6s and will only buy an iPhone but won’t pay the prices for new flagships as she thinks it’s mad as she only pays £30 a month for hers..and won’t even pay £50 a month.

So yes while it’s great to see what Samsung and google are doing to compete feature wise sales show that people will buy what they are used to not what people on here will buy

They just need to let go of the stranglehold they have on not letting you do things. If they do that, i may jump in and get one for the first time since 2010. But doubt it ever happens.

Id agree. In here most everyone is a tech junkie and they buy multiple phones throughout the year and start all over when the new ones come out. I dont get that but i guess its a hobbie of sorts. An expensive hobbie, but i tend to keep mine around 2 years...give or take a few months, even though i can upgrade every 6 months but dont see the point if i like what i have.

I almost agree except Apple Maps works better for me where I live and with the tiny backroads I deal with than Google Maps does. In fact I wish I could put Apple Maps on my Pixel 2. It gives me a clean interface that lets me choose among different routes without constantly trying to reroute me the way it thinks is best. Sometimes I need to pick a certain path for a reason.

But otherwise, yes, I am rooting for them all to do well and push each other to give us the best tech for fair prices.

Apple is also sending out their vans to the most backwater roads in my county. I was completely shocked to see them in the parking lot mapping out the little country school I volunteer at. It’s on a road that actually is an important connector to various areas in our rural corner of a largely more suburban county. But it’s really backwoods looking. I never would have thought Apple would bother with it.

I give Apple credit for taking Maps seriously and putting this visible effort into it. Google maps does tend to get me lost and confused out in the country. (USA, East Coast).

There are those who do upgrade every single year through the Apple upgrade program and carriers do make it somewhat easier, but with the rising cost of smart phones, I see that happening less as smart phones cost on the rise. Not to mention, are the improvements with smart phones on annual basis worth someone’s funds to upgrade every year? For the majority of consumers I would say not. But it depends on the person as well.

Respond, Apple!

Apple doesn't tend to respond to anyone else in the marketplace. That's why some features take years to get on iOS products. Apple isn't in competition with Samsung, and they don't need to be at this point.

This is exactly what I'm getting at.

If this trend continues, & Samsung (or Android as a whole) address their shortcomings with every release, slowly but surely they'll become an option for iPhone users who don't want to spend so much on a phone.

Being locked into Apple is becoming less convenient for many...look at the HomePod for example...

Apple needs to compete, & if that just means their pricing drops, then it's a win for iPhone users.

I'm not of this opinion. Apple must compete. If they didn't, they'd wait even longer before implementing features their competitors have used for a generation or two prior.

Agree, I do not up grade every year(even when they weren't real high priced). I always skip the next Galaxy because of minor upgrades. I've had the first one, 3rd, 6th &7th. I only got the 7 because I broke my 6 and it was cheaper to get the seven than fix the six. Wasn't planning on getting the 9 till I saw the price went down and they have a 50% off on trade in going on. I was going to look into a Motorola or LG.
I disliked my Nexus 5 and pure Android so didn't consider a Pixel.

Edited the title & added the below to the OP. This thread was meant to stay in the iPhone section...I guess the same principle can apply vice versa though. So long as people understand where I'm coming from. :D

Since this was moved away from the iPhone section, I need to clarify - thread is intended to be from an iPhone user perspective. It was my way of expressing how I embrace success of opposition phone manufacturers & an attempt to encourage others to look at it as a positive, not something to hate or be jealous about.

I understand that perspective. Many people are tied into devices because of the OS. However, cost is also another concern because it could mean the difference between a modern device vs using an aging one that isn't up to snuff. Imagine trying to use an iPhone 4s for a few years after the 5 came out? No LTE. If I used a 6S right now, no water resistance or dual stereo speakers for instance. Plus the Apple battery replacement program would actually apply to me.

If any of my Canadian family members want to buy the iPhone X, they must pay $1319 CAD + taxes to get the device outright. Assuming a 13% sales tax, that's $1,490.47. I wouldn't pay almost $1500 CAD for a smartphone.

Here are few alternatives people could seek (13% tax, CAD pricing):

Pixel 2 - $899 CAD pre-tax (64gb) -> $1,015.87 CAD
Galaxy S9 - $959.99 CAD -> $1,084.79 CAD
OnePlus 5T - $659 CAD -> $744.67 CAD

The iPhone X doesn't do enough to make a difference worth it, at least for me. Others may feel the same exact way too?

I could buy 2 OnePlus 5Ts at the price of a regular iPhone X. That's insane to think. Early 2017 models, like the S8/LG G6/OnePlus 5/HTC U11, seem like better alternatives too.

I think I would go with the Pixel 2 in Canada if I had to use one device for many years because you get the AMOLED screen, a two + year warranty, one of the best cameras on the market, high specs, and it can work with many other peripherals. No need to pay that Apple tax for the Apple Watch either. Android Wear would integrate just fine.

I’m not ‘stuck in the past’ I just haven’t bothered to use it because I’ve had no issues with google maps. I hid Apple maps in a folder and it’s just stayed there for the past 3 iPhones I’ve owned. I haven’t really given it s thought since. As long as the information I get is reliable then I couldn’t give a toss what app it is.

I’m not sure if I’m returning to android in 2018. I sold my S8+ a couple of months back. Nothing wrong with it, awesome device, I just didn’t use it much.

The S9+ is tempting but I don’t think I’ll consider the carrier version. I’d likely wait for the unlocked international version to drop in price around November. They are usually 30% to 40% off by then which is a bargain when you consider the sheer amount of goodies Samsung throws under the hood.
