I have kids and can’t imagine paying $650 + tax for something that’ll sit in a drawer, but to each their own.
well if this is of benefit, no tax (same phone at apple with tax would be $900).. I have kids too. I am planning to use this now - launch at least as I am selling my 14 Pro this week. Almost got the mini but something in my head kept saying "battery".. also given how lightweight it is compared to the max I will get it will be a lightweight alternative for other things too. So long story short, it won't just sit in a drawer all the time :)

this thread makes little sense - two sets of people agreeing amongst themselves & not understanding the other POV.

FWIW we have a 5C and a 6S that weren't worth trading-in in case anyone breaks or loses a phone, but no-one ever has. If we need a new 'modern' phone to use as a longer-run replacement, we'd buy one if the eventuality arises.

par for the course 😎

I need to have two working smartphones available everyday, so I carry an iPhone 13 Pro Max as the primary phone and an iPhone 2020 SE as backup. My concern is that I always have a backup smartphone that can run the same apps as the primary smartphone. I don't worry about duplicating nonessential features like the camera, and so forth.

The SE is a pretty good choice: It provides the same overall functionality as my primary phone and it is quite affordable. And I have confidence in the phone's durability -- iPhone hardware in all models is second to none, in my opinion. I would recommend iPhones, even the SE, to just about anyone.

Take care.

I am looking for a back up phone for me or family to use as needed we have a combination of 14 Pro, Max and regular 14. Want to be price sensitive. Thinking a 13 mini? or a regular 16? Any recommendations? I know I probably don't want to go too far back due to lack of future supposed. thanks -
I used to keep my last iPhone for backup and to maintain an old phone number. But after years doing that I decided the iPhone's auto backup worked perfectly and if I lost a phone I could just walk into an Apple Store and walk out with a new iPhone with identical data to the lost phone. Easy-peasy. Or one could use overnight or same-day shipping if necessary.

Thanks all, got an iPhone 14 for a good deal from a local/small dealer friend for $650 tax included.
My wife and I have a rule that we established when my son got his first iPhone and that is - our kids do not get better phones than we do.

We pay for the service, we pay for their phones, we pay if they break their phones. If they wish to kick in extra money, then they can get a better phone. But that's an option that hasn't been exercised by them yet.

My son takes care of his phones so it's not necessary to have insurance or AC+ for him. If his iPhone SE 2020 went down, he'd be able to switch to his iPhone SE 2016. Both are in good condition and he chooses not to use cases.

My daughter on the other hand, is merciless to her things. She's ruined an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 6s, both formerly my wife's phones. Right now she's got an SE 2020 and because I got that brand new she has to suffer with the fact that it went right into a case.

She has backup phones, the iPhone 5 and 6s she ruined. They both still work, they're just messed up.

My wife's backup phone is the Pixel 3a XL she got in 2020. She uses it already on a second line. And mine is my 6s+ that I mentioned earlier. My Pixel 3a XL could also fill in.

This is the result of my never turning in trade-ins for credit or pursuing promos. We have phones.

Something always goes wrong for me.

I replaced my 11 Pro Max in May 2021. Despite paying for a 2TB iCloud sub so I could 'easy-peasy' walk out of an Apple Store with identical data that isn't what happened. I backed everything up and just about everything restored except photos. Fortunately, I had all my photos physically backed up so the 2TB sub became convenient to allow me to dump photos into the Photos app on my Mac and get them all back on my phone.

Now they are all out of order.

But it wasn't walk-in/walk-out.

I always held if a child is old enough to have a smart phone they are old enough to mow lawns, wash homes, or bag groceries and pay for their own phone

If they are not responsible enough to do that, we’ll that solves the question of if they can have a smart phone

Generally I'd agree with you…only my son didn't get an iPhone just because he wanted one. There is a five year difference between him and his sister. So, when he was in junior high his sister was in grade school. Both at the same school and he was responsible to make sure she got where she needed to be. We needed to be able to get a hold of him (and his sister through him) in case we were going to be late picking them up or for any other matters.

So he was 15 when he got his first phone - an iPhone 4s 8GB with a 2GB/mth line. I paid $25 for it. That would have been around 2018 I think (he'll be 20 in October).

Once he went to a different school, his sister needed a phone for the same reason. She got an iPhone 5. That phone had been paid off in 2014.

I've paid for my son's iPhone SE and SE2 because he's been responsible. But for my daughter, this is the last smartphone she gets if she breaks it. My wife has already informed her it'll be some cheapo Android garbage flip phone for her if that happens.

Or work in a mine.
In Africa responsible children do that at age of 10.

This back up iPhone 14 in midnight has been a job so far, very similar to the pro minus the weight! Was lucky enough to sell my 14 Pro today prior to the arrival of the 15. But I must say the battery, smoothness and general operations of the iPhone 14 have been excellent!

So you sold iPhone 14 Pro and bought normal 14?
🤔

All 1 month before release of 15?

  • I've been offered a £725 trade-in for my 14 Pro 256, which I may exercise if I choose to buy a 15 Pro / Max after having watched the upcoming keynote.
  • I paid £849 for my kids 14 128 last year to replace a broken X, which may drop to £749 new next month (equivalent 14 > 13 when the 15 launches).
Either way around, I'd far rather keep a 14 Pro 'as a family spare' rather than replacing it with a new regular 14 (with half the storage), especially when it'll likely drop £100 in a month. As ever, YMMV, but huh? o_O

the thing is, I was able to get more money for the pro, hence me selling it. we don't need a back up pro phone. The battery is already so much better on the 14 regular than the pro it's refreshing.
