  • I've been offered a £725 trade-in for my 14 Pro 256, which I may exercise if I choose to buy a 15 Pro / Max after having watched the upcoming keynote.
  • I paid £849 for my kids 14 128 last year to replace a broken X, which may drop to £749 new next month (equivalent 14 > 13 when the 15 launches).
Either way around, I'd far rather keep a 14 Pro 'as a family spare' rather than replacing it with a new regular 14 (with half the storage), especially when it'll likely drop £100 in a month. As ever, YMMV, but huh? o_O
I was able to get $1,000 USD for the pro which to me is a great deal, had to move before value goes down!

You could just pay 89£ for official battery replacement.
Not to mention your iphone will lose a lot of value in literally a month.

for the one I just sold the pro? I dont need two pros to be honest, too much heft... a max is enough for me, it will be nice to have a lightweight, capable ( yes I said capable) backup 14 regular. :)

But by selling the Pro and buying normal you basically swap Pro for normal lol.
Not to mention in a month it will be much cheaper.

the way I see it is, Pro = $1000, 14 = $600, I save $400, it would have been the same either now or post launch as the figures would have shifted... anyway again, I dont need a pro back up :) I am not that high class I guess?

But if you bought Pro for 1000$ then you will sell it for what, 500?

I guess I get it now, though I still would have used whatever old phone I had lying around for the next month, rather than buying a brand new one (and then stuck the old one back in the drawer). Seems like your situation/needs were pretty specific, though

What will be the use of a backup phone?

Why not go with non-smartphone?

Does a backup phone still need to be a smartphone?
It depends on case to case. i am not sure about the OP's definition of back up phone .

But to me , i prefer calling it as secondary phone instead of back up phone.

i) it should have same charging port as my primary phone so that i can just carry a single wire.
ii) Have same OS so that it will be easy for me
iii) should be portable enough ( i have a max phone as primary phone ) so i chose Iphone SE 2022 as my secondary phone (for work related communications ).
iii) The necessity for secondary phone increases when we are working from home ( i work in IT so we always have more meetings /webex calls on my secondary phone .

Purchased extra to have on hand just in case for food delivery, etc. during Covid crisis.

yes exactly, no need for fancy.. I would buy used on Facebook but hear of lot of scams recently, Best Buy has a deal $400 for pixel 7 maybe a choice too..
Check out used iPhone 12 mini. The prices are about $100-150 less in the USA compared to the 13 mini. If it’s a backup phone I don’t think battery is that important. If I can get a steal of a 12 mini I’d buy one in a heartbeat.

I recently bought an open box mini 12 on eBay and I love it. I have a specific use for it without needing a phone connection. I would like to have a second line for it but found cost for that to be prohibitive on Verizon. It would have been nice to have the option of taking a light weight phone out in my purse or pocket.

Too bad the iPhone 14 lack a physical sim. It was far easier just to transfer the sim from one phone versus the hoops of transferring esim

I used to keep a back up phone but now trade in when I but new. If I lost my phone or something happened, the Apple Store is only 20 minutes away. I keep it backed up to the cloud so it would repopulate all of my data In an hour.

Best to just backup to time machine.
Wouldn’t fully trust their cloud.

Had one day all my password just disappeared for example.

The Apple store is only 30 minutes away for me. But they don't keep 512GB 11 Pro Max iPhones in stock. They have to be shipped and that takes a week. I've been there. My 6s+, a secondary phone, filled the gap for an entire week.

I also backup to the cloud. I have a 2TB sub I pay Apple monthly for. I got it when I had to replace my 11PM because I didn't want the hassle of having to restore several thousand photos.

I had to anyway, because the backup did NOT restore all my photos. Thankfully they'd all been backed up physically over time.

This is a nice thought and if it's working for you, keep doing it. But it doesn't work for everyone, or at least as seamlessly as your post would suggest that it should.

Thanks, I WILL keep doing it. It is just what I do and I am not suggesting everyone should do the same.

We all enjoy that we have choices . . . . . for now!

And if you went to iCloud.com would you see all your photos there?

Awesome. Yeah thinking a 13 mini might complement my 15 max nicely :)
So in the refurbished store they all have new batteries ?
Wait we are in August 2023 aren’t we or have I missed a couple of years. Why all this mention of a 15 max and iPhone 16. These don’t exist yet

I didn't think to do that. I might check later. Of course it's been over a year now.

When this happened, I just started pulling folders of backed up images off my external drive and dumping them in to the Photos app on my Mac. That pushed them to all my iDevices.

But even so, if they'd all been on iCloud, they were not all on my iDevices.

I currently use two iPhones daily. My current setup is iPhone 12 PM [Verizon] (primary) and iPhone 13 Mini [T-Mobile prepaid] (backup).

I currently work 2 full time school district jobs, so without charging my iP12PM during the day, it wouldn’t last through my second job. So I’ll use the 12PM until noon, then I’ll switch to the 13 Mini while the 12PM is charging.

If someone calls me on my primary line, the call forwards to my backup phone if I don’t answer from 12PM.

Keeping an eye on the competition, my backup phone is a Galaxy S23. Advantage, it still has a SIM slot. It has its own number.
My main phone is the 12 Pro.
