The rumor that the 24" iMac will be skipping M2 seems to be true. So that means a three-year gap between iMac models. It's quite clear where on the priority list this ranks and it's low.

The event today is likely the last event of the year, so the 24" iMac won't appear until spring of next year at the earliest. A larger iMac may never appear. Not as long as the Mac Studio + Studio Display exists as an alternative.

If true I will wait. I'm retired and no longer need high end stuff for what I do. A good top of the line iMac will be perfectly fine for us at home.

Always. That is why I've been pricing Mini and ASD and other displays.

But the current iMac display is such a high quality compared to so many other displays out there. It is a bargain, if you don't need a lot of memory or want lots and lots of GPUs.
Yeah, that's the rub. For like $1300 you get a *really* nice bright display at better than 4K resolution. It's hard to pass up, even if it ends up costing more down the road. That said, this is my second iMac and I've gotten very used to the form factor.

What do we know about the price of the M3 imac? Is it expected to be the same price as the M1 upon release?

M3 chip will likely come out within 6 months before April 2024.

iMac 24" M3 refresh will likely occur within that time frame.

Be aware of these price points of the 2020 iMac 27"

- $1799 iMac "Core i5" 3.1 27"
- $1999 iMac "Core i5" 3.3 27"
- $2299 iMac "Core i7" 3.8 27"
- $2499 & $2699 iMac "Core i9" 3.6 27"
- $2599 & $2799 iMac "Core i7" 3.8 27" (5K, 2020; 5700/XT)
- $2999 & $3199 iMac "Core i9" 3.6 27" (5K, 2020; 5700/XT)

A replacement of the iMac 27" will likely have the above price points.

- M3: $1799-1999
- M3 Pro: $2299-2799
- M3 Max: $2499-3199

iMac Pro pricing of $4999 will likely be reserved for a M3 Ultra. A return of that product's price point with a M3 Ultra chip is very slim as the iMac Pro was originally a place holder for a Mac Pro.

The 27 inch display is something I would consider getting, but that depends on what the price tag is in the end.
Rumor is that the iMac 27" replacement would either by a 30" or 32". My personal speculation on resolution would be 5.5K and 6K respectively.

I am fairly confident about Apple following the 2020 iMac 27" price considering the starting price of the 2021 iMac 24" was $1299.

Below are the 2019 21.5" vs 2021 24" price of the smaller iMac

- $1299 iMac "Core i3" 3.6 21.5"
- $1499 iMac "Core i5" 3.0 21.5"
- $1599 & $1699 iMac "Core i7" 3.2 21.5"

vs

- $1299 iMac "M1" 8 CPU/7 GPU/2 Ports 24"
- $1499 & $1699 iMac "M1" 8 CPU/8 GPU/4 Ports 24"

iMac Pro pricing of $4999 will likely be reserved for a M3 Ultra. A return of that product's price point with a M3 Ultra chip is very slim as the iMac Pro was originally a place holder for a Mac Pro.

would that cover the cost for it, by a substantial margin?

You didn’t mention which 27” monitor. I would guess not, especially not with substantial margin. Driven by used prices for equipment. If comparing new prices, probably the mid range new 24” M3 iMac would be cheaper (possibly significantly depending on which 27” monitor)

You could keep your existing monitor as a second screen for a new M3 iMac?

Just curious, what’s your motivation to replace a relatively new setup with a brand new m3 iMac?

Many on MR think of the worse when a iMac 30" 5.5K or 32" 6K comes out.

I doubt that a $4999 price point for a non-M3 Ultra chip will ever happen.

I placed the small & big iMac on a table with their MSRPs so others can be more optimistic with the future larger screen iMac.

iMac Pro never sold in volume. It likely sold as many Mac Pros and far less than any Mac Studio.

Mainly I like the idea of having an all in one display that is up to date on modern standards and reducing the clutter. I like the Mac Mini, and I have no issue keeping it if the new Imacs are out of my budget - but having a new Imac would reduce all the wires and cluttering I have on my desk - plus it would have the novelty of being a new product that hasn't been updated for a couple of years.

I ran the numbers and the larger iMac is cheaper than than a Studio Display 27" + Mac mini + keyboard + mouse.

iMac is ideal for anyone who will not upgrade for a decade. If you expect to upgrade every 3-5 years then just go with the Studio Display 27" + Mac mini.

The idea that an 27" m3 Imac , which will have a 5K resolution at a minimum, will cost $1,799 to $1,999, when Apple sells a 27" display for $1,599, is wild... Apple won't sell a computer, keyboard and mouse for $200 to $400

Apple is known to drop prices of their monitors when cheaper & better tech appears.

Just look at the the smaller iMac having the same MSRPs for both 2019 21.5" vs 2021 24".

Few pointed out that amazing price point was maintained even when the display was superior coupled with a leading edge die shrink chip, faster RAM & faster SSD. Power consumption also dropped while raw performance improved.

That will occur with a larger iMac in future.

I would never get the studio display (the new ones). I have the 2011 Studio display, bought it used on ebay. When I get the imac, I will also not get the accessories that come with it (most likely).

I’m currently running a Mac Studio M2 Max with a 55” 8k TV as a display. Love the neverending screen real estate. But the ppi is only like 160.

I’d love to see a 40” iMac. That would be 8k at 218 ppi.

I'd love a larger than iMac 32" 6K but I see that occurring after 2033.

1st iMac 27" was launched 2009 & 1st 32" 6K display was 2021. A dozen years separates them.

A larger iMac with a starting price of around $1800 to $2000 will be fantastic.

I think its delay of 9-15 months from now has more to do with lowering cost of parts and possible reliability related to a 30" 5.5K or 32" 6K display.

1st AMOLED Android phones came out in 2010 and it took Apple 7 more years for them to launch it in the 2017 iPhone X. They likely delayed launch due to AMOLED burn-in concerns.

I had a 2015 Google Nexus 6P & 5X phones and they experience AMOLED burn-in within the 1st 12 months of use. 8 years later I have yet to hear any complaint about the 1st AMOLED iPhone.

Not all parts or tech is of the same quality and as such Apple's known to delay new tech until it is at par with Apple's branding.

When a larger than iMac 27" M3 comes out at those price points I'd likely be the 1st to preorder. I do not need a Pro, Max or Ultra as my use case has not changed since 2015.

I am replacing my by then dozen-old iMac due to natural wear & tear and the final Security Update last July 2022.

Looking forward to keeping that iMac M3 3nm until 2034 for the iMac M9 0.5nm.

I too would just like the bigger screen. Don't require the power of higher variants of Apple Silicon. Will be great if it comes in similar colours as that of the 24"

I'd be satisfied with macOS on iPhone 15 Pro Max + USB-C display with these I/O but substitute HDMI with another Thunderbolt 4 port.
