I've read ml will not work on the 1,1. Any updates on this? Is it case closed or will it possibly work? I remember similar lion rumors.

This is by no means a final answer but the system requirements for ML have not changed since DP1 and I don’t think they are going to change now or anytime in the next few months.

Well, DP1 worked just fine with very little trouble. DP2 changed everything.

Chameleon is one way of getting ML to run.

My Mac pro is so capable, I'd hate to see it lose support - even though it is 6 years old.

I'm in the same boat. Mac Pro 1,1 that's kicking it hard and still has upgrades worth doing (processors). If ML doesn't work then I'll stick with Lion.

Yup, my MP 1,1 with 5355 Octo @ 2.66 is faster than about everything Apple still makes except the latest MPs. I understand Apple doesn't want you to be able to run it's latest software with a 6 year old machine, but it's almost as if the MPs were way ahead of their time, because mine still runs as strong as it did when I bought it.

It is an awful big boat with all of us in it. I actually haven't moved to Lion yet - I have 1 application that hasn't been moved to the Intel Architecture yet. The only thing holding me back - well that & how Apple F$%^*& up spaces.

I think the MP 1,1 and 1,2 users will be stuck using Lion, not that 'stuck' is the right word, but I don't honestly think ML is going to be so groundbreakingly different from Lion, I think you'll all be just fine.

OS X keeps getting worse anyway. Stay on 10.6 till they drop support. Which will be in like 6 months knowing Apple.

The problem isn't mountain lion, which is a soft update - it's whatever the next major os update in the future that we'll miss, ending up like the powermac g5's.

Any updates on this? I hope that at least the workarounds that popped up online will work with the final release on the Mac pro 1,1.

Wouldn't upgrading to a 64Bit-capable CPU solve the ML problem in the first place?

You can't just upgrade the CPU on a Mac Pro 1,1 you have to actually replace the machine. The Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1 do not support EFI 64bit so in order to have that you have to have at least a Mac Pro 3,1

The solution is simple: Free yourself from Apple's planned obsolescence, install 64-Bit Windows 7 or 64-Bit Linux on it and be happy. Even by today's standards, the Mac Pro 1,1 is awesome hardware and MORE THAN CAPABLE ENOUGH for almost anything you will throw at it.

You don't have to upgrade anything. All Mac Pros have 64-Bit capable CPUs -- the Xeon processors in those machines are real beasts. Except for Apple's own operating systems, those old Mac Pros can run 64-Bit OSes like Windows, Linux or FreeBSD perfectly fine. Only Apple's support for their own software is a complete failure. Like Asman70 said, it's an EFI issue because Apple in their infinite wisdom decided to put a 32-Bit EFI in their 64-Bit workstations for which they dropped all support the moment they released it.

I had one of those Mac Pro 1,1s myself, and Apple's total lack of love for this computer really drove me mad.

It makes me sad, and it's possible that this strategy will come back to bite them. They have a relatively narrow product line as it is. It deserves appropriate support.

A number of people on here were irritated when Apple never wrote a 64-bit EFI for this model. There are many other things. They never fixed that garbage raid card. They never seem to work with manufacturing partners on improving gpu drivers. They barely even provided bug fixes to the G5s once the first intel machines started to trickle out. It's an extremely irritating company at times.

And I would be willing to bet that when they developed the 3,1 they did it on 2,1 or 1,1 machines at first.

In other words, there are probably EFI boot roms from 3,1 development process that were able to run 2,1 in EFI64.

They just have no reason to ever release such a thing and so probably never will.

They do know what is best for us, whether we like it or not. The little upstart company that made fun of Big Brother has become Big Brother.

Add me to the boat.

I've recently traded in my Macbook Pro '08 to Apple for a $650.00 gift card, so now I'm using my trusty 1,1 Mac Pro and my NEW iPad.

My 15" Macbook Pro collected dust once I moved to the iPad but all the heavy lifting is done on my Mac Pro. With an SSD and a 4870 in this thing, its by no means 'slow'. I can compress a 1080P Blu Ray down to a 720P AppleTV rip in around 2 hours with HandBreak. I could drop in another 4 cores into this machine with a CPU upgrade for about $150.

But I have my Apple Store Credit and some cash from eBay waiting a new Mac Pro....Part of it is I have a neurotic need to stay current with the OS releases. The other part of it is I haven't bought a new workstation in 6 years.

I am going to be starting a new job in a month and I'm also waiting on the new Macbook Airs......the 15" Macbook Pro became overkill with mediocre battery life, but perhaps a new 11" Air with a hopefully HDPI screen and a respectable battery would be awesome......

The problem is not with the CPUs, but the EFI firmware which was set up as 32bit. You can replace the CPUs with no great hassle as I and many others have with Intel Xeons X5355 2.66GHz Quad Cores.

It still has the 32bit firmware and nothing, as yet, will change that. Wait until the official release of OS X.8 and then maybe look at Chameleon or other work arounds. It is no big hassle having to stay with Lion.

Work on Macs here at a retirement village for folk, and some area quite happy plugging away with 233MHz G3 iMacs and system OS 8.6!!

I was under the impression one of the main restrictions was the graphics card.

My Mac Pro 2,1 had an ATI X1900 from Apple in it, which isn't supported in ML. I upgraded to a non-Apple 5870 and hold out that a turnkey solution will be available.

I waited about a year to move to Lion, for me the most important thing is to be able to get the latest security updates, and as Apple will most likely leave behind Snow Leopard with Mountain Lion (and with their new speed of releases, Lion may be unsupported in 18 months...) support is vital.

I have a workaround on my thread.. ;)

DP1 was capable, DP2 is not. There is no easy workarounds anymore. The 32-bit kernel is dropped.

Only way to boot 64-bit kernel on Mac Pro 1.1 / 2.1 is using another bootloader like Chameleon, essentially hackintoshing your Mac Pro. And it's troublesome. There's a thread on netkas if you'd like to give it a try.

But even then we are likely to see many Mac Pro 1.1 / 2.1 drivers dropped for major release.

clearly stated in the thread that we manage to get EFI64 to run in older Macs lol.. (except those with GMA950)

I don't know, I think it's not so bad.

It's a very technical thread though for people comfortable getting their hands dirty with boot loaders. The approach in the "Booting the 64-bit kernel on the 2006/2007 Mac Pro" thread on netkas.org involves MBR partitions, which is not technically necessary although it took a lot of experimentation to figure that out.

I think the only thing missing right now is either a brain-dead step-by-step or a super-simple installer more applicable for novices.
