I have to admit I was extremely turned off by the white bezels -- thought they looked childish -- but surprise surprise, Apple knew what they were doing.

Black bezels represent such a harsh contrast and feel so antiquated now.

It is OK I suppose, few issues for me. I would have done it differently but then they don't employ me. I would have a vote option for "meh".

I got used to the white bezels and the lack of an Apple logo on the front. But the god-awful faded color of the front of the iMac (and the stand) compared to the beautiful colors on the back is just reprehensible. I can't see myself buying anything but silver, simply because of those faded/pastel colors staring at me all day.

My concern is when we might see a successor to the 27" iMac.

I like the new design, but don't like the idea of giving up three inches of screen size. I keep seeing rumors about new Macbooks but nothing about new iMacs and I'm getting concerned Apple might just NOT create a successor to the 27".

Rumors point to 2022. The iMac in more recent years has been receiving updates every 2 years or so, and the larger iMac was updated last summer. Some rumors suggest it will get a larger display size (maybe closer to 30”)

I own an 8/8/16GB/1TB in silver. I like the design. Bezels, chin, etc. are all good. The only thing I'm wrestling with is the downsizing of the display from my prior 27" iMacs. I work with large, financial spreadsheets on a regular basis and I would typically have one open alongside a browser window. The 24" iMac is definitely workable, but the more I use it (about 3 months now), the more I miss the big screen. If you're fine with a 24" display, I highly recommend it. If you're not sure about the size, I recommend playing around with a 24" display before buying it. (And no, I don't want a second display for my home office).

have you tried using the scaled resolution of 2560x1440? gives you a decent amount more screen space.

fwiw: I always thought scaled resolution looked awful on my MacBook Pro but it's so much better on the new iMac display

I quite like the design and am very tempted!

How would a current M1 iMac (1TB SSD, 16GB RAM version) compare to the below specs?
Would it be better or equal/worse - heaviest use is some FCPX editing/rendering.....

MBP 16" (late 2019)
2.3Ghz 8-core i9
1TB SSD
32GB RAM
Radeon 5500M 8GB

The above system stays on my desk and does not move, hence why I'm thinking of replacing with a larger screen iMAC rather then running an external monitor etc (and while my system still has some value!!).
I use an external keyboard and mouse with it as I find it more comfortable so the laptop itself has always been completely untouched!! Hence I'm hoping it will sell for a fair bit if I decided to 'upgrade'

On the other hand I'm waiting for the larger sized iMAC.
Before I purchase I need more TB ports - at least 4 ports ideally (across 2 bus') for all my external editing drives etc, and I would also like 10GBe so I don't have to use an adapter any more along with a 32GB RAM option. Then will I think of seriously purchasing, but the M processor has me confused on whether I'd see an improvement over the 8-core i9 I already have?......

It's absolutely coming. Just not till early 2022.

I like the new iMac 24" but my ideal one would be the larger one, I'm guessing 30-32".

However, I want a space gray version. I really love how stealthy all my space gray accessories look, and I'm hoping the larger one will introduce a space gray colour.

If I get one, I'd most definitely get the VESA mount and mount it on a monitor arm.

I love how having it on a monitor arm makes it look like it's just floating there and keeps the space underneath the screen open!

I can only say this: I hope the new bigger Imac (30 inch?) doesn't have to be as thin as the current new 24 inch so there is enough cooling for a good videocard, and that it will be RAM upgradable and easier to repair. And I want a silver version, not space gray.

Could be better aesthetically. If a TV can have an almost bezeless screen so can an iMac Apple should have put the internals in a base stand like HP does this would eliminate the chin. The M1 is a powerhouse fast and furious so as a Mac it’s top notch

Apple kept the chin not because they had to, but because THEY WANTED TO to retain product identification.

It’s that simple.
Yes, otherwise it would just look like any other monitor, just aluminum instead of plastic.
But they also had to, to get it so thin (not enough room for certain components behind the display)

There is no "video card" anymore, at least not in the way we're used to thinking about them. The unknown is what Apple will do with "pro" models. Thus far, we've only seen M1 consumer models, and we know their silicon has the video support right on the chip... which means no video cards.

They have a winning iconic design that works and no compelling reason to change it. It’s instantly recognizable so why change it if not necessary?

Porsche has retained its essential 911 design for sixty years despite ample evidence it isn’t the only design you can use for a high performance sportscar. They keep the design because it’s instantly recognizable even if it didn’t have any insignia or the word Porsche on the car. Everyone knows what it is and what it represents. After all these year advertising and marketing are built right into the design without a word being spoken.

The current iMac is the most recent evolutionary step of a design that began with the third generation iMac. It‘s as if Apple had been searching for an optimal form that could become immediately recognizable and associated with them without a word. It is their thing, at least presently, and all the whining over it will not change anything.

Could they have eliminated the chin? Yes. And the result would have been something that looks like everything else.

They didn’t want to change it because it has value and is important to them.
