Anybody thinking of leaving iOS behind...?

I am pretty happy with my iPhone, but I don't like certain things about Apple's politics, nor do I appreciate things like the 3.5mm jack disappearing from my iPhone and the quality that macOS has suffered recently.

Others also complain that things like the Mac Pro, the Mac mini, and the MacBook Air have not seen an upgrade since as long ago as 2013.

Are you contemplating other choices or are you married to the Mac ecosystem? As with my iPhones, I've been very happy with my Macs since I switched. I haven't upgraded past the 6s, however, but I had purchased every iPhone since the 3GS.

As for where to go...I don't like Android. I would probably only switch if it was to a Linux phone. I can do without the App Store.

iPhone is the warm bath. Sometime I think "gosh, I'd like to get out of the water" but you start to get out, and it's very cold, so you get back in.

As far as going to anything outside of iOS and Android, I'll pass.

How did Apple manage to make the 3.5mm jack disappear from your iPhone?

You made a conscious decision to buy an iphone without that jack. And it couldn’t have been THAT big an issue if it didn’t prevent you from buying it or prevent you from being pretty happy with it.

All that to say, i’m not understanding if you actually are dissatisfied with Apple, and if you are, why.

iOS on iPhone just urks me. I can use it for the day occasionally, but not as my daily driver.

iOS on the iPad. I like it. iOS just fits well on a huge display of a tablet, and is functional enough for what I use a tablet for. iPad has the best battery life for tablets by far, which is a huge plus.

I love the design and battery life of Macbooks. You simply can't find a better design for the price point, or as great of battery life on a notebook that's so small/portable. For those two reasons alone, I'm willing to deal with the lower internal specs for the price. I plan on getting a Macbook soon.

I'm done with Macbook Pros. I have a 2015, and it's doing me well, but I'm a PC guy when it comes to top of the line power. Macbook Pros are a rip off IMO. Can't upgrade the main specs, and they always throw in trash dedicated graphics.

Never had a Mac desktop or iMac from this decade.

Never in my life had a Apple TV. But family and friends have. IMO, it's just a glorified Roku or Amazon Fire box.

Between my wife and I, we own a good amount of Apple products (2 Apple TV 4's, Apple Watch Series 3 (her), 13" MacBook Pro, 15" Retina MacBook Pro, iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone SE, 10.5" IPP, iPad Mini 4).

iOS on my IPP - nothing can compare. There isn't a tablet that even comes close to matching the Pro IMO. On the iPhone it's a different story. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate iOS on my iPhone, but I don't love it either.

I have a Galaxy S8 that I'm using exclusively this week in combination with my IPP. While I'm only three days in, I can definitely get use to this combination. I do miss iMessage, but my wife is really the only person I text on a regular basis; everyone else I use WhatsApp and FB Messenger to communicate with.

While I do love the quality of apps on iOS better than their Android counterpart, I have come to appreciate the notifications and customization I get with Android. I'm certainly not leaving the Apple walled garden anytime soon, but the past three days have showed me that I can most definitely "survive" with an Android phone and iPad Pro (I never use my rMBP anymore, so I have prepped that machine to be sold).

If you're able to, try to pick up a cheap Android device and test it out (ie. Original Pixel). I honestly thought that I couldn't make it a day without iMessage, but I certainly have learned with this experience that all will be okay in the world without it. I'm certainly still getting used to the quirks of Android, but I have enjoyed the experience thus far.

I think, for me, it helps that my group of friends I communicate most often with utilize WhatsApp and FB Messenger. It would've been a lot harder for me to even try out Android had my circle of friends only utilized iMessage. Granted, it hasn't been terrible texting my wife over SMS the past several days.

This is my biggest gripe with Android. There is no Tweetbot or Twitterific. I barely even use the official Twitter on my S8 and usually just browse Tweetbot on my IPP.

As a prominent Apple blogger tweeted recently, if Twitter blocked all third-party apps - it would almost certainly drive him to give up on the service entirely (and he added, that might not be a bad thing for his general productivity).

I totally agree. I don’t even want to look at twitter when all I have is the official twitter app or website.

If people who don't see ads leave Twitter, would they care? I mean, the people are freeloaders.

Yeah the ads wouldn’t bother me if they didn’t screw around with the timeline. But when I see them layered between all the suggestions and other algorithmic rubbish they do annoy me. If you are happy with what Twitter provides via the web and their official app good luck to you. Clearly people like me are in the minority, because most people will be doing what you do. Still sad for Android users they have nothing that compares to the apps I mentioned.

The reason they’d care btw is most prominent twitter users who provide the most valuable content don’t use the junk Twitter provides. If the really valuable tweeters all went away, that would be bad news for twitter.

I am in a rather unique position:

I have switched off between Apple & Samsung over the past couple years....
There are things I dislike about apple that made me switch and I have this android and there are things I dislike about it also.

However android is a bit more open source which is obvious.
I do not use imessage at all as I do not have a need to, I do not use iCloud (iTunes does fine) I do use FaceTime occasionally so I am not emersed in the ecosystem.

With android I am not a big google user but ut is easier in my eye to get rid of info via google/android.

Apple I hate the fact everything is so expensive and it seems you lose some features even though you are paying more $$.

Right now I am using a Note 8 from my 6s, and I miss my apple watch and my iPhone but then I remember the stuff I do not like and the price and for me it is hard to justify but I am thinking of coming back full force with a mac computer and new iphone and the watch.

Not to mention everyone has an apple watch and I can find some nice android watchs out there software is another thing vs. The hardware.....


So yeah unique situation for me.

The rest of the world had already moved on with WhatsApp, WeChat etc. In my part of the world very few know about or use imessage.

WhatsApp is certainly huge in the UK. The person I text the most my girlfriend uses WhatsApp. just a shame it doesn't work on the iPad like it syncs with my MacBook where I can text from there.

In your case, you'd probably see little to no benefit in Apple Messages, especially if you don't want to use the feature that allows syncing across your Apple devices. You'd essentially just have an SMS/MMS client.

How does everything sync? Is it all through iCloud like if you look at a webpage on phone it will carry over to ipad/mac?
