I am pretty happy with my iPhone, but I don't like certain things about Apple's politics, nor do I appreciate things like the 3.5mm jack disappearing from my iPhone and the quality that macOS has suffered recently.

Others also complain that things like the Mac Pro, the Mac mini, and the MacBook Air have not seen an upgrade since as long ago as 2013.

Are you contemplating other choices or are you married to the Mac ecosystem? As with my iPhones, I've been very happy with my Macs since I switched. I haven't upgraded past the 6s, however, but I had purchased every iPhone since the 3GS.

As for where to go...I don't like Android. I would probably only switch if it was to a Linux phone. I can do without the App Store.

I left all Apple stuff in 2017... there is a thread about that called something like - 2017, the year I left the walled garden. I had Mac, iPhone, Apple Watch, Apple TV, Airport Extremes and Time Capsules, and within the all Apple family iPads too. I now use nothing Apple, but the rest of the family is still all iPhone and my wife still has an iPad she uses daily.

So I was most definitely "married to the ecosystem", and I didn't like that. What started me on the split were a couple of things 1) letting products just flounder and/or die - Airports, Mac Mini, Macbook Air, etc. 2) Apples instance that you will have 3 devices - computer, tablet, phone, when the rest of the world gives you the option of covering the same use cases with 2, and 3) the announcement of the X - expensive, no FPS, no plus size, and oh that notch. I had already become delighted with the Surface Pro when the X announcement took place. I ended up moving to a Note 8 and Gear S3 to replace my iPhone 6S+ and Watch. Love the combo.

I agree with you that I don't like Apple or Tim Cook's politics blending which was part of it, but I use all this stuff so much for my daily work and play life... so I want an experience that fits me. Apple's lost me entirely due to the product limitations. I have a 2in1 and a phone, and can use a pen on both of them to create and edit OneNote files. Apple has no ability to use a pen on the computer and phone... only the tablet. I don't want to carry a "separate" tablet, as I travel quite a bit. Apple is completely out of sync with what I want.

I travel quite a bit on long haul trips with a colleague that is all in on Apple. In the airport he's trying to charge up his Macbook, iPad, iPhone, and work issued Dell laptop. I am charging my Surface Pro and Note 8. Since the Surface Pro's tiny AC adapter has a built in USB port, I need only find one outlet. He's dealing with 4 things if he wants fast charging. And his Apple Watch usually dies during the trip and that's hard to charge in an airport. My Gear S3 can go several days without charge. Then on the plane, I've got one computer I'm using for movies, work, etc.... that has really good battery life; and I can use it for takeoff and landing. He's got two computers and a tablet to cover all of what he wants to do. Its literally "not even close" how much better my experience is.

I am always baffled why people think they can only use one platform.
I am an iPhone/Mac user, but I also have and use Android and Windows devices. Each platform has its strength, and nobody told me that I can only use one platform exclusively.

3.5mm jack: It is also disappearing on Android flagship camp. Google removed it on their Pixel 2, after they made fun of Apple last year. Sony did it. Nokia too. Motorola did it before Apple. Even Xiaomi did it on their flagship Mi Mix 2. Of course, due to the variety of Android, there will always be a device that still has it, but clearly the trend is moving towards the removal of it.

I believe that if you're not always thinking about what platform serves you best, you're going to have a bad time eventually.

ask siri to define mother....go ahead....doing it twice just for fun lol

iPhone’s weirdest glitch yet: Ask Siri to define “mother” twice, learn a bad word

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/201...siri-to-define-mother-twice-learn-a-bad-word/
Glad you put this back. I’ve been warned I skate thin ice around here sometimes. I didn’t know if this ice was too thin so I deleted my post. ;)

I’m an awful mother. :p As soon as my husband demonstrated this weird Siri thing to me I ran and showed the whole family. They thought it was hilarious.

I buy devices to support the needs of my work, play, etc.. I don't buy them because they are from a particular vendor. That said, I can't be as productive if I don't think about workflow and that ties to platform. OSX vs. Windows is a decision and its work to move. Android vs. iOS is not quite as big of a deal.

Lol...I showed my oldest son (22) and he thought it was hilarious. We always have discussions around what platform has the best assistant...Apple or Google. We are chalking this one up to Apple.....best assistant to teach people bad words o_O

I am going to seriously consider replacing iOS/iPhone with the new HTC U12+. The leaks confirmed what I wanted more or less: 18:9 aspect ratio, facial recognition, QHD+ display, 845 processor, 6gb RAM, 3450 mAh battery.

All these new rumors of iPhones are all over the place. X end of life and dead based off TSMC reports; dongles may or not being included; $550-$800 price points; no 3D Touch; etc.

I need something definitive, performs well, gets updates in a timely fashion, and will provide 2-3 years of value. HTC, OnePlus, Sony, and Google are at the top of my list on the Android side.

How did Apple manage to make the 3.5mm jack disappear from your iPhone?

You made a conscious decision to buy an iphone without that jack. And it couldn’t have been THAT big an issue if it didn’t prevent you from buying it or prevent you from being pretty happy with it.

All that to say, i’m not understanding if you actually are dissatisfied with Apple, and if you are, why.

No, I didn't. I said I did NOT upgrade past the 6s because of the disappearance of the 3.5mm jack starting with the iPhone 7.

I am not at all dissatisfied with Apple, except I realize that, at the end of the day, they are not there to make my life easier. I'll leave it at that.

Between my wife and I, we own a good amount of Apple products (2 Apple TV 4's, Apple Watch Series 3 (her), 13" MacBook Pro, 15" Retina MacBook Pro, iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone SE, 10.5" IPP, iPad Mini 4).

iOS on my IPP - nothing can compare. There isn't a tablet that even comes close to matching the Pro IMO. On the iPhone it's a different story. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate iOS on my iPhone, but I don't love it either.

I have a Galaxy S8 that I'm using exclusively this week in combination with my IPP. While I'm only three days in, I can definitely get use to this combination. I do miss iMessage, but my wife is really the only person I text on a regular basis; everyone else I use WhatsApp and FB Messenger to communicate with.

While I do love the quality of apps on iOS better than their Android counterpart, I have come to appreciate the notifications and customization I get with Android. I'm certainly not leaving the Apple walled garden anytime soon, but the past three days have showed me that I can most definitely "survive" with an Android phone and iPad Pro (I never use my rMBP anymore, so I have prepped that machine to be sold).

Hey, I'm curious. I'm thinking of upgrading to either the 2018 9.7" iPad or the 10.5" iPad Pro. I'm big into beautiful displays, so would you say the so-called TrueTone with ProMotion display of the iPad Pro is significantly better than the regular one? Also, separate question on the ProMotion part: It just means it's 120Hz refresh rate, so how much better than the 60Hz refresh rate of previous generations is that?

Thanks a bunch! :)

The U12+, is that a Linux phone? Probably not. I wonder how much more secure Linux phones are. Anyone?

No, the U12+ is the successor of the U11, which came after the HTC 10.

Hell of a lot of threads about leaving iOS in this forum these past few months.

Feels like everytime I login here there's another "why I left iOS" or "thinking about leaving iOS" thread.

What I will say is that the Grass is not always greener on the other side no matter which way you go (iOS to Android OR Android to iOS), but it's great to see more people trying different things.

Personally, I could never have iOS as my daily driver of an OS in my phone, it's far too limited and still feels like a glorified Feature Phone OS, rather a full blown smartphone OS that acts like a computer in my pocket away from my computer, but that's me, hence I use iOS on my iPads for simpler things, and Android on my phone as I always have my phone with me,.

iphone/watch/ipad/macbook pro/air pods just work too damn well. Do like android but could never have it as my daily driver
Late reply, But this is me. I have al the devices, and I have tried using a Galaxy S9 and a Google Pixel 2 XL.

I even went as far as installing Windows 10 on my MacBook Pro and trying to integrate as much as I could. I ended up getting frustrated and spent the next day switching everything back. It was a bad choice I made.

Honestly, if you have most of your things scattered though out Apples ecosystem, then you are pretty much screwed. Doing all that work to move platforms that aren't even integrated as well with each other. I love how everything I do on my Mac just appears on my iPhone and iPad. It makes everything so simple. From Music and Pictures, to random Files on my desktop. It's freaking awesome. Anyway, that is my take on everything.

I highly prefer Android and would love to come back, but I really just don't like worrying about my privacy with Google and whoever else has access to my info or can track me. Yeah I know, the info supposedly is anonymous, but I don't know that I necessarily trust that. And even anonymous info can be damaging as in the case of Facebook just recently. I get really tempted to move back, but really any new bell or whistle of a new phone becomes old very quickly and I find myself just using my phone for the basics 99% of the time. I've ruled out some phones because of even worse privacy issues such as ZTE and Huawei. Samsung's aren't my cup of tea with the curved edges, even though I used to be a hardcore Samsung fanboy, they lost me. Most other phones still have large bezels, like Motorola and such, or have ugly skins, and all (except google) have pitiful wait times to get an OS update, 8+ months if you are lucky. The Pixel 2's are overpriced and aesthetically challenged, but are tempting because of the fast updates and smooth ride, but still with the same privacy issue.

Plus the iPhone X really is a nice design, although I wish it were wider, next year with the Xs plus I suppose. But I really like what they did with the bezels, even Samsung is lagging behind them in that aspect. I also respect Apple's stance on privacy, just the little things like not being able to be tracked in Safari and their stance on encryption.

I hear you loud and clear on the privacy issue. That's one of my main reasons for being with Apple too. I also like the iOS-OS X integration, but at the end of the day, Apple is part of the globalist system just like Google (a.k.a. DARPA) is, so I don't trust Apple as far as I can throw them.

The only change I'd make is to a Linux phone, but there don't seem to be many.

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
I bought a P20 Pro for a reason...

To take better photos of your cat! :D

As for the OP, nope, I am addicted to my Apple Watch, love it, and I don’t mind iOS as it’s smooth enough, despite the bugs.
However, due to Cooks plans for more profits and throttlegate which affects my 6S, which now has poor battery life after the 11.3 update despite the os claiming it’s fine, I am not certain if I want to give them a grand for an X..
I think I’ll wait it out and see what comes out this year. So my mindset has changed towards them.

So much, THIS^^^^ I actually did give them a grand and a half for an X—well my husband did for my Christmas present. And I found out the camera was blowing out highlights worse than ever and causing massive red eye problems with the flash. Did they even test that camera? If they did, they set the bar way too low. I think they just coasted on giving it a small spec bump and calling it a day. Their OLED displays tuned to their specs hurt the eyes on a lot of people and induced migraines requiring visits to the ER in a few others on this board. Incredible.

Apple is so focused on profit margins now they’ve forgotten the customer experience.

On top of that throttle scandal now we find out about the mic issues in the iPhone 7/7 Plus. I’m pretty sure my husband’s and my iPhone 7 Pluses were afflicted. Something has to explain why our voices kept cutting out when we tried to talk to each other on those phones.

I have to say I’ve been delighted with the 8 Plus. Oh well, the camera results sometimes are crap compared to the ones from my S9+ and Pixel 2. But flash photography is good. Anyway, I liked it so much I got it in Red, too. (I had a silver and white one already).

I am just hoping and praying any future iOS updates don’t destroy my 8 Pluses. Seriously, when I first unboxed my 7 Plus I loved that iPhone so much. It was buttery smooth and got insane battery life. It was a lovely surprise gift, so there was a sentimental value that made me want to keep it more than a year.

Then iOS 11 came along and that phone was never quite right again. :( Now my teen daughter struggles with hers.

Let's hope the press walloped them enough and the rumors are true. If so, iOS 12 and beyond are going to be the shift in thinking they should have had from the start. Don't think I can go back to the AW, though. This Versa is so thin and light, I sometimes forget it's there.

That’s interesting about the cameras, so do you find the 8 Plus camera is better then the X?

Also I flip all the time between the X or wait but I think I’ll wait at the end of the day.
I may wait to see what the 6.1” rumoured cheaper iPhone is like? See what they cut back on it. And see what the new SE is like. I mean if I was to look at a Plus, the new cheaper model may be better value and offer the new design language and still be smaller.

macOS sure. iOS? I don't know. I could care less about Apple's politics, but actual technical stuff like the headphone jack (and possibly, no more free adapter soon) gives me pause. The only thing is, to me, phones are in a different world from computers. I know Windows 10 well, use it both at work and home (on my gaming rig) and could live with it. Android? Not so much. Between the security and privacy issues, I don't think I could stomach it.

IMO there's nothing out there that I'd care to replace it with - no reincarnated RAZR, no 8110 (from Nokia - sold everywhere but here apparently). My iPhone 6 has been a trooper - has been going strong w/no issues for at least 2yrs. Unless something truly dynamic comes out in the future, I'll probably just end up going with an SE and paying extra for an adapter.

Wow you actually like the Versa better than an Apple Watch? I haven’t seen one in person yet. Honestly I’m not taken with the pictures of it I’ve seen so far.

I was just trying to figure out what to do with my Yahoo account. I’m getting phished on it constantly. Clearly my account info was compromised quite some time ago. Unfortunately somehow one of my Apple Pay credit cards is tied to my Yahoo account somehow and my husband and I for the life of us can’t get the credit card account information to update to accept a new email address. And I can log into my Yahoo account but when I try to go to the control center to manage my Yahoo Account I’m asked nonstop to enter my password. Over and over. I’m not doing this inside of an email but through their actual site. At least I hope so.

I got the email notifying me that Oath has taken over my Yahoo account now. I’ve had that email account for close to 20 years now. I don’t have too many things tied to it. However at one time since it was my main email account it was tied to a credit card for automatic payments. I don’t know if it still is. I lost track years ago when my husband took over managing my bank accounts and credit card accounts when I was badly frail with a cardiac problem for close to a couple of years—I’m 98% fine now, just gotta watch out for strep.

At any rate I’ve got a lot to untangle. Then there was a comment over on Android Central from one person saying he can’t close his Yahoo account because it uses his real name (which mine also does) and if he closes it Yahoo can eventually release it to be reused by someone else! I need to look into that.

Anyway I was over on Android Central reading an Opinion piece about the Oath-Samsung deal that’s going to put data grabbing apps on Samsung phones, especially the Verizon ones.

Goodness I’m really upset. I wasn’t at first, but wrestling with my Yahoo account and its stranglehold on one of my actual bank accounts and the heavy data mining is giving me a major pause to think about a lot of things. They did say in their new terms of service they will plunder everything including the contents of your emails and everything you look at and use while logged into Yahoo/Oath/Satan.

Now I’m rethinking the power I’ve given Google over all of my data. Jeez, all this from a few minutes doing a WTF over an email account.

Yeah the hardware and cameras are much more pleasant to use on Android but the invasiveness is getting to be a bit much. I have a free barely used Proton Mail account that I might end up going with (need a paid version) but what happens if they ever sell out?

I feel like a ping pong ball debating between iOS and Android.

For me, the Versa is better because it's lighter and doesn't leave a giant round mark on my wrist from the heart rate sensor being pushed into my skin. I'm also 48 hours into having it and I'm down to 51% battery only having charged it once when I got it.
