Anyone actually sell the iPhone and go strictly iPad?

After about a month of usage, I have started thinking about selling my iPhone and getting a wifi hotspot capable sprint phone, or basically a phone with a much cheaper plan. I have the 3G iPad, and my reasoning was based on the fact that sprint does have cheaper plans. In my case, if I turned on 3G on the iPad, I would pretty much be breaking even on my monthly payments, but my most capable device would always have access.

Anyone dropped their iphone for a cheaper phone yet, or strongly considering it?
 
Yup, I'm calling AT&T to cancel tomorrow. Just no need in my circumstance (consulting from home). I am also selling my mbp as I have a quad core osx box...and a whs. So yah, all inn all, off some gear goes. I realize it's not for everyone, but for MY needs it seems a logical choice.
 
I will probably get rid of my iPhone once my contract is up. As it is, I barely make 100 minutes of calls per month. I'll probably get one of those pay-as-you-go phones.
 
That's my plan, iPad, dumb phone, man bag...

I've been using an Android phone for > a year now, and I'm starting to get pissed off because of the platform's fragmentation, and don't get me started on that abortion of a phone Google sold me, the Nexus One. Google's plan seems to be to stonewall Nexus One owners till the phones are out of warranty, then they'll bring out a phone that's a hell of a lot less buggy.

Saw a quote from Eric Schmidt the other day referring to the upcoming Android/Chrome tablets and he said something about screwing up them too on the first generation. He had to be referring to the Nexus One mess.

There's a thread with 2.5K responses on the google.com/phone support forums about the touchscreen they used, which was never intended to be used as a multitouch component.
 
I actually decided to buy the iPad 3G instead of a new phone this summer. I was planning on the verizon iPhone if it happened, or the pre with the hotspot app.

Then I realized I am out of contract on my current phone, and don't have to have data on it. I decided I'd rather pay for data on the iPad so that made my decision for me.

I'm happy and will not end up in a contract after all this summer!

So how about I "cancelled it" before I got it? :p
 
I sold my Droid to get the iPad and I think it was a great decision. Now I just have a dumb phone that i use to make calls and use the iPad and google voice to send texts. It works well, everything I used the Droid for the iPad is better at and easier to use. The only thing I can think I will miss is that I used my droid as a reference guide through skyscape during nursing clinicals and I really can't carry my ipad all around the hospital. Other than that it was a great decision and I do not miss my phone.
 
I've had this thought ever since the iPad was announced.

Sold my iPhone for $500 after cancelling AT&T which I had to pay a fee for breaking the contract but I made profit anyhow.

Now that I have the iPad 3G I can use Skype to make calls for only $25 a year unlimited! (Waiting on Skype to update with VOIP, and iPhone OS 4 for multitasking so I can leave Skype on in the background and finally receive calls with my online Skype number)

And with the iPad 3G being only $30 a month for the data plan without a contract I'm saving plenty of money than when I had the iPhone.

Of course I don't take the iPad everywhere I go. Most of the time, but it's kinda best to also get a go phone since the iPad isn't pocketable.

You save money nonetheless and you get a much bigger screen, resolution, and feel than the iPhone

Paying $83 a month for the iPhone sucks.
 
I dont have an iPhone...was anticipating the Verizon iPhone...but wont hold my breathe, so I sold my iPod touch and got the 3G iPad since I've been doing alot more traveling in the next few months so the GPS and non-subscription service data will be extremely cost effective and my phone plan is up.

good timing...but if the iPhone for VZ ends up happening ill have to compare the pros/cons if i'd like to delve into that.
 
I haven't sold my iPhone, but, since I moved, and AT & T signal is spotty at best here, I cancelled my service and picked up a Palm Pre to use as a hot spot for my iPad. Best decision I have made in a long time.
 
Well I went and did it, I have had my iPhone since the 3G came out on day one and I have now moved to the incredible, don't get me wrong I love Mac and will continue to use one for the rest of my life but...I had to admit that when the iphone came out, they were light years ahead of everyone in the smartphone category. Today they are light years behind. When I read that the new iphone will have a 5 megapixal camera and be able to multitask, my incredible has a 8 built in now and I can already multitask. As soon as they root the phone I will be tethering for free. Of course the Iphone does have it when it comes to looks, but that as does a wife will only get you so far. Funny thing is that my 3G had a ton of dust under the screen, a water sensor that was trigger ( no I didn't drop it in the toilet, it was a stupid raindrop that triggered it) and I was still able to sell it for 200.00 on craigslist in 2 minutes with 33 calls in 30 minutes. Mac lover: yes. Ipad lover: we own 2. IPhone lover: may be again someday.
 
Nope, keeping my iPhone. Can't really put the iPad in your pocket. Wish apple would come out with a smaller tablet like, 5" with cell phone ability, that will be perfect. Dell is supposed to come out with the Dell Mini Streak phone/tablet, which will run Android. Problem with Android is not many good 3d game apps.
 
i've not gone strictly iPad but i have certainly ditched my iPhone. i cant afford to have 2 devices with the same limitations. happily coupling my iPad with my Windows Mobile (HTC Touch Diamond 2 if you may want to ask). the phone acts as a well... phone.. and my file managing device. iPad is for everything else :)
 
I got a 32gb wifi because I couldn't wait for the 3G. I also own a 32Gb iPhone 3GS. I don't think I'll be ditching the iPhone. I found the iPad is still too large to be a carry everywhere device. As tempting as it is to trade up to the 3G iPad, I think I'm going to stick with my iPhone/iPad wifi combo. I can use the mywi app to tether in a pinch if I really need to use my iPad away from a hotspot, but that's only if the task can't be done on the iPhone. Of course at home, work, and hotels the iPad will take priority. I can't wait for the 4.0 update, the iPhone should be much more useful. I have pretty much stopped using my MacBook pro for surfing and email since the iPad.
 
Not exactly what the OP was asking, but the iPad has killed all interest I had in a smartphone. I was looking to probably get one sometime this year, but then the iPad announcement squashed that. I honestly kept thinking that my iPod Touch was great but could really stand to be bigger (I read A LOT of journal articles) and has mobile internet. :)

As for a phone, I just use my current junky really old one to occasionally call home. Don't text. Not interested in Twitter or other micro-surfing. In fact, the #1 most common use for my cellphone is as a watch. I use it to check them time about 10x or 20x as often as I make calls or do anything else with it.

iPad is it for me!!
 
Yup. I sold my iPhone 3GS and got a Blackberry Bold strictly for texting and went with the iPad 3G. It was a good decision. I've had an iPhone since they came out and was getting kind of bored with it. I may get the fourth generation this Summer but right now I'm happy. I can get a lot more use out of an iPad.
 
I did.

I wanted to tether my iPad and since AT&T won't let me, I switched to Verizon and got a Palm Pre Plus which has a mobile hotspot. I can tether up to 5 devices simultaneously with no additional charge. Cost me $99 with a one year contract.

I liked AT&T's service. I will go back to them as soon as they add tethering and if they do it at a reasonable cost. Verizon and Sprint do it for free. I can't see why AT&T wouldn't - other than the obvious revenue.
 
No because I have a 32GB WiFi model. If I need a data connection when I'm out and about I have my iPhone. I still want my iPhone to have a purpose plus it's MUCH more portable than the iPad and gets the job done very well. When I'm home Im strictly iPad, but on the go it's my trusty ole iPhone. ;)

I'd rather save on no data with my 32GB WiFi using it at home and lug my iPhone around in my pants pocket. ;)

Isn't the 3G data plan for the iphone also $30?
