I'd rather save on no data with my 32GB WiFi using it at home and lug my iPhone around in my pants pocket. ;)

But your paying more than one lugging only an iPad.

iPhone and iPad Wifi = $83 - $140

iPad 3G = DATA plan $30 + Skype $25 (yearly) = $30 a month + the added $25 (yearly)

Having only the iPad 3G saves you money if your willing to lugg the iPad around. And heck you can get a Go phone if you want a pocket phone. and use the iPad for all those iPhone/iPad apps.

My sister slapped her iphone sim into a dumb phone with full intentions of subsidizing her 64 gb ipad 3g with whatever ebay would bring for her 3gs.

She lasted 2 days.

Remember there is more to the iphone then just the data. Visual voice mail, threaded txts, these would all be hard to live without. I have a work black berry, and I'm an inch from flinging it into a wall everyday.

You guys are really going to get murses and lug the ipad everywhere?

I think you misunderstood...I was being sarcastic and responding to a previous poster. I do use my iPhone outside of home which is why I only have a wifi iPad. I feel that is the best for me and saves me money. I am not paying an additional $30 a mth for iPad when my iPhone works just fine outside the house and is MUCH more portable.

There are apps that can give you with what the iPhone has such as texts. Skype is a great application that has this.

I'm not going to lug my iPad everywhere but it would be with me most of the time. I don't need to make calls all the time anyways and the price point on the monthly plans for iPad 3g really makes it worth it.

There are some people that don't want to spend $83 and up for an iPhone a month so the iPad 3g is the way to go if you like the iphone software/ app store.

When it comes down to going to a mall for example I have this vintage slim backpack that has two straps and use that to put my iPad in and other stuff.

Yeah It's dumb to have an iPhone and the iPad 3G.

But what I'm saying is it's the best way to save money by just having an iPad 3G no iPhone.

If you really want to keep your iPhone and pay the $83 and up then of course get the iPad wifi.

But if you don't want to pay the $83 and up then you need to get rid of your iPhone and get the iPad 3G and download Skype app and use that as a phone. It's less portable but theres some people out there that won't mind taking the iPad to use as a phone so they can save money. You just need a backpack when going places.

Apple is going to release multitasking meaning you can leave the Skype app on in the background so you can receive calls from people. Soon Skype is also going to update to have VOIP so we can make calls on 3G. It's going to be just like a phone.

You just need bluetooth headphones.

See, for me, the threaded texts on my Treo are far better than anything I have seen on the iPhone. I can't stand the "bubble" look in iChat either. Visual voice mail doesn't matter to me - it takes me three times to remember my VM pw each time because I get so few! Lol!

But my treo does have a stupid issue that has me daily waiting to chuck it into a swamp.... So I can relate. But I haven't found anything better as a dumb phone to replace it with, so I keep on trucking.

i'm keeping mine, i can't lug around the ipad while i'm jogging or walking through the city and trying to find a good pizza joint on Yelp, or find directions with my wife when visiting a new state....
As much as i wanted to its just not practical, you should do a small experiment: record how many times you pull out your iphone throughout the day and for what purpose, then ask yourself can i pull out my ipad this many times and still feel like you're not carrying an extra bag

Believe me, I've considered it. If I wasn't still on contract I would have already bought a dumb phone. Since getting the iPad I haven't used any of the iPhone features except for the phone part.

common, i don't believe it...
you follow sports? its not like you can have an ipad propped up in business meetings, iphone allows you to sneak a peak...

Rarely call anyone ( use landline at work) and mainly text my family, so i ditched the iphone, sold it and use google voice for free text and skype for calls ( 30 bucks a year) .

If anyone calls or sms me at google voice i get an email, log on and sms back.

I have a htc hero (rooted) and it's horrible. Most of the time I don't receive incoming calls unless I turn data off. But what I'm deciding to do is sell that phone and get a basic phone that don't require me to have a data plan. Then I will signup for the iPad 3G data plan. It dtont make sense to be paying for data on both my iPad and cellphone.

The skype deal did have me actually considering losing a phone all together. With the ability to do calls on the ipad, a Bluetooth headset is all someone would need. I would work google voice in there also.

For this scenario to be ideal though, a few things need to change with skype and google voice iPhone OS integration. Would be an easy choice if we had backgrounding and a well implemented google voice app.

I have a linux vps somewhere out there on the internet that i pay eight bucks a month for and use it for my own personal dev work.

I installed asterisk and got a sip account from flowroute. Its reasonable, 1.39 monthly for the did and a penny per minute for calls.

My experminet this morning was making a phone call using the acrobits sip phone on my ipad while using 3g only and driving to work.

I began the call while driving down i4 and ended the call about 16 miles later. The call did not drop. I had a bit of cutout when i think that the 3g switched towers but it didnt drop the call.

Gonna do some more experimenting but i doubt i will ever get a personal cell phone again at this point.

I gave back my work laptop, and i pretty much only use my ipad. I am as productive on the ipad as i am on a laptop. The only problem with the ipad for me is the lack of a webcam. When i travel, its nice to be able to see my kids every night via skype call.

People don't get rid of their iPhones because of the iPad but also because of the monthly payments of the iPhone which is ridiculus and some people out there don't mind lugging around the iPad to save a great amount on their monthly bills.

Very much the boat I am in. Love the iPhone 1G I have had for almost three years. Was thinking about getting what ever new iPhone comes out this summer. But the move to a new iPhone would add another $10 a month to my present iPhone bill.

Not a killer, but that is on top of the $15 or $30 a month for for iPad 3G's service. The you add to that my new found love for reading books and magazines because of the iPad. It just starts to add up. LOL

Now as I and others have said in various threads - only if AT&T would allow tethering with the iPhone to that iPad. Surely there must be away for AT&T to allow for iPhone to iPad only tethering.

There are things like these that I love the iPhone for.

LOL on the murses thing there. :) I am generally out and about with a bag of some sort 80% of the time. A photographer here that usually carries a camera of some sort everywhere (generally larger cameras that don't slip in a pocket). But there are times I will go out with just the iPhone in my pocket or on my belt.

If I leave the iPhone I will most likely miss the Bump App the most. Great way of sharing contact info with others.

Think you hit on something there that bothers some of us that are rethinking the iPhone with the arrival of the iPad. And that is "just how connected do we want to be?".

I know at work I use my iPad during my 30 minute lunch and dinner breaks. But for my smoke ( ) breaks I don't feel like lugging out the iPad and take my iPhone instead. There have been times in the past that friends were late at a meet up somewhere and I kept myself amused surfing the web and such on the iPhone. Dare I say that sometimes at work my iPhone will buzz (silent mode :) ) and I will check my email or text messages.

Well I did it... Over the weekend I picked up a Palm Pre Plus.
So far so good... The only downside I see to this is my contacts. Now I will have to manually update my iPad or MacBook whereas before they stayed in sync with each other.(iphone, ipad, macbook) No big deal I guess..
I think I will end up staying with the Pre (on the 30 day trial now)
Its really weird not having an iPhone. I've had it with me everyday for the last two years. Overall the Pre is a pretty decent phone. The WebOs is actually really nice. Multi tasking is a plus too :)

Nope, really looking forward to the new iPhone actually. If all the leaks are true this is going to be the most significant iPhone hardware update yet.

I lasted about 3 days with a BlackBerry, which I picked because it was better integrated into my office network. I went back to my iPhone. All was right in the world again after that. :D

My iPhone gets far less use, but it still is a useful device (even though I have to carry a blackberry for work e-mail). It's just not convenient (for me at least) to carry the iPad everywhere.

I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. My decision was driven by the fact that the ATT data network is unusable where I work (at least during working hours). So far I am happy with the decision. The Pre is not an iPhone, but it's not that bad. For the sync issue I bought Missing-Sync for the Pre which allows me to sync wirelessly (or over USB) with my Mac. It will even sync music and pictures although I haven't tried that part yet.

FWIW

There is no way I could get rid of my iPhone. I still have the 2G version and love it. If the iPad folded up into my pocket I would replace my iPhone. I like the iPad overall more as an experience but it's too damn handy having the iPhone in your pocket.

Maybe the iPad is defining that new paradigm that Jobs hinted at - it's not a netbook, nor a notebook but something new. I've an iPhone but nowadays tend not to use the non-phone related features on it that much. The ipad is easy enough to carry around for work purposes, and is always nearby when at home. 99/100 I'll reach for the ipad rather than the iphone. That larger screen is very seductive :). The iphone feels quite limiting once you're used to the ipad real estate.

I'll still keep hold of the iphone though. It's paid for and the SIM is paid for by my company so no point dropping it for a dumb phone. Running MyWi gives me 3G access for my (wifi) ipad should I need it, without having to pay for an extra data plan.

The two devices can coexist very happily together. They can also become an extravagant waste of time and money. Choose wisely :).

Face it guys. Get rid of the Iphone - you'll miss it, you'll miss it!
It's your money head ruling your heart and thats not always a good place to be. Regrets......
