Why not just get the real tablet in that case instead of getting a wannabe phone/tablet?
It's the convenience factor of not having to carry around two separate devices. Something you can put in your pocket and carry around comfortably but also use as a tablet when needed.

If the foldable device is able to serve the role of both then its well worth it. That is *if*. The Fold is the wrong size and aspect for me and I'll continue to carry around a tablet. This is not to say I don't want to stop with the tablet if that's possible. But to say something about "size matters", I sold my iPad in lieu of a Samsung S5e as I got a significantly bigger and better display in a smaller and lighter package. If someone does that they're happy to do away with it all together. And no, I don't want something the size of a 13"… that too is simply the wrong thing as well.

For me at least the problem is the solution/change/advantage it provides… not the $2K in of itself. One thing to charge, one thing to handle, one pocket to need, etc etc etc. There's a lot to be gained if its right.

IPhone XS Max 512GB $1449, Apple Care + $199, Airpods wireless $199, Silicone Case $39, 18W Power adaptor 29.99 Total = $1916

Samsung Fold 512GB, Free Extended Warranty, Free Case, Free Galaxy Buds, 25W charger included Total = $1980

No more expensive than others when you consider whats in the bundled box :)

Though you could probably say this "first gen" is "second gen" with the overhaul they gave it, but still a second gen pass :)

Haha, I see what you mean but with the short amount of time between the stop of sale and this release, I very much doubt that there has been any change in the underlying technology, this is just a quick bandaid of the existing tech generation.

Having said that, as a hardware engineer myself I'm not going to sit and mock Samsung. I feel genuinely sorry for the hundreds of engineers that must be feeling anguish back when the original reports were coming in as well as now - Designing cutting edge technology that you know has certain flaws And nevertheless, due to market pressure, being unable to pull the brakes in time must be a horrible feeling.

The "two devices in one" sounds great... in theory.

But what Samsung delivered is a "phone" with a screen too small, in the wrong aspect ratio, and THICK when folded... and a "tablet" that has a soft plastic screen with a visible crease down the middle.

It sounds like the worst of both worlds. :p

I admit I like the tablet part... but the phone part falls short. I mean... look at this thing:

You're not gonna do much on that screen. So you'll be opening it up 1,000 times a day.

I think people were expecting a Galaxy S10 that opens into a tablet.

But it sounds like Samsung started with a tablet... folded it in half... then slapped the bare-minimum phone on whatever space they had on the outside.

I am not too sure about the internals, but they fixed a few things mechanically that were exposed during the pre-release test. Those include the protective layer that many people thought was a screen protector and removed to the detriment of the phone. They beefed that up and also wrapped it under the edges so it doesn't look like a screen protector. They also added some protective caps to the hinges and all but eliminated the gap between the phone body and hinge when closed.

Internally, I am not sure if anything has changed, so perhaps v1.5 is more appropriate than 2. I am with you though, I think I would wait for Fold 3 before considering trying it.

I'm a complete believer in folding phones. I will absolutely demo the Fold as soon as it hits my local AT&T store. I'm a little skeptical that such a thick phone can be comfortably placed in a front pocket.

The issue I have with the Fold is the price. It's simply absurd. If it weren't for the price, I could potentially see myself getting it. It would an amazing GPS unit in my car. And that screen unfolded is a huge leap forward compared to any current iPhone screen. Sadly the folded screen is way too small. I do believe we will see a Fold 2 next year with a much bigger folded and unfolded screen. So I would have to stay with AT&T Next to give myself that freedom to upgrade in 12 months. (Which now costs an additional $5 a month with a new contract )

We will see. This feels a lot like the time I left the iPhone (after 6 years) for Android in 2014 with the S5 Active just so I could get the larger screen.

Edit - The more I think about it, the price is just a total non-starter for me. I’m open to a future Fold, but definitely out at this price point.

The concept excites me quite a bit. When I first saw it, I saw myself picking it up.

However, I feel that these types of phones aren't quite there yet. It's almost like they're selling a prototype, because the market has been clamouring for "innovation," and gotta secure the bag right?

But the moment something more finished emerges, I'll definitely try it out.

Yes, ideally they should start with a decent sized single screen & work from there, but I can understand why they went the other way with v1 - a big, unfolded screen is the wow factor they were aiming to use to promote this new device. & they wanted people to feel comfortable with opening the device multiple times a day to use that big screen.

I want a phone that offers me an 8" screen when unfolded like the Mate X but opens like the Fold.

I'm definitely going to demo the Fold when it lands at AT&T. Definitely not a purchase at $2000 but man do I want one of these phones when a proper model comes out that isn't a fortune. Every other phone on the market looks so boring to me in comparison.

There's no way I'd get one because I simply can't justify nearly 2 grand for an experimental phone (plus I think the small screen on the front looks ridiculously out of proportion).

I'm very interested in the technology though and will keep a close eye on how things develop

Best of luck with it.

What kind of environments will you be using it in - office, or a more ‘risky’ type setting?

mostly at home, maybe the occasional trip, my iPhone is still my main phone so this was more for the novelty

I ended up buying one on launch day
I had the code to buy one on launch day but it was for Singapore. I was going to get a friend who commutes weekly to pick it up

However it turned out slightly more expensive due to tax and exchange rate and the warranty and service was problematic, so I declined

I may still get it if it turns up in KL as the Duo and Neo are too far away to wait :)
