I think foldables will give consumers more device choices. Those who prefer their phones & tablets to be separate, they may continue with the current offerings. For those who wants to intergrate their two devices into one, they now have the option. I reckon it's a win-win for consumers.

Now if only the price of the Fold were reasonable.

People have said that about iPhones for years, but they still sell pretty well anyway :)

The Fold will be an instant status symbol. And as Tom's Guide put it:

"Remember that the Fold is only $500 more expensive than a fully loaded iPhone XS Max, while it has features, specs, and a coolness factor that the XS can’t dream of matching."

I don't know that anything with "Samsung" written on the back is really a status symbol. And I mean, Tom's Guide isn't exactly GQ.

Foldable or not, you put Samsung on it and the message is "great hardware suffering from a terrible software experience"

And honestly, that horrible front screen is a non-starter. Samsung really screwed that up for a device that's a smartphone first.

Why does it have to be small screen that is used for "phone"? Typically pro apple fixed narrow sided view of anything not apple. Sad.

Most people would open up the fold if you are really using apps. Small screen is used for on the move short uses like looking at notification, answering calls or quick text reply.

Sad people sign up for Apple forums and are surprised there are Apple enthusiasts on it.

Most people use their phones at a glance most of the day. Checking mail, texting, tweeting. These are quick operations which do not require a tablet screen. Too bad the Fold is a bad smartphone in its primary mode.

Correct me if I'm mistaken but that 4.6' front screen is almost similar or bigger screen size of an SE screen?

Edit:

I'm thinking like it's an SE & iPad Mini combined.

I think a lot of folks are going to be shocked when they realize that a 7.3” display isn’t that big.

It IS that big, besides the actual size it's because of the aspect ratio. Personally I refuse to believe a 18:9 screen is it's advertised size. Take the 16:9 measurements and that is the "true" screen size IMO. Go put a ipad mini 7.9 screen up next to the largest flagships out now and you will quickly see the difference.

It’s a bad smartphone and a subpar tablet. You can buy an iPhone, an iPad, and a bag to tote the iPad around for less than the $2000 you’ll spend on this silly devicf

A bad experience is a bad experience. This is two devices in one package and neither of them look very good.

Not to mention: Android apps are terrible for tablets

This sounds like the same argument people make about the surface pros being a tablet and laptop. I wonder if they think carrying around a laptop and a tablet makes more sense, oh heck they do that's why Apple's valuation is so high. For me carrying a tablet AND a laptop creates a MUCH more subpar experience. I have a feeling we will feel the same way in 5 years about foldable phones. How often do you see someone espousing the benefits of a flip phone in 2019 because it's smaller, more convenient to carry and less prone to damage?

If you want to save money just get a flip phone and a pad of paper, you will save a lot more than having an iPhone and ipad. I mean, why bother with technology? Don't get me wrong I'm not advocating for the Galaxy Fold itself, but rather for the entire segment (of which there is only one device, so I think we have to wait to see how it unfolds - pun intended). There are already leaks of better attempts at foldable screens such as Xiaomi's and Huawei's leaks.

Yep, no one ever watches video, browses the web or reads books, we should eliminate those from smartphones so they are only used at home on a proper tablet or PC screen. No one ever wants a larger screen to check mail, text or tweet either. If anything today's smartphone screens are too large, these "quick operations" do not even require a smartphone screen. They would be perfectly usable on a 1990s flip phone.

Way to take an argument, completely misunderstand it, and blow it out of proportion.

This is like the Zune of takes.

People are bending over backwards to justify this product. It's laughable.

Laugh it up but you are looking at the future of smartphones. Apple already have a patent for thier version of a folding iPhone.

At least the iPad doesn’t have a 10mm gap in the middle ;)
Try laying one of the new one on the desk, you’ll see it comes with that 10mm gap right out of the box ;)
At least the fold it is meant to bend :D

Need to justify? Go find me a phone with a 7.3 screen which you can put in your pocket. You can't. It is laughable that one is blinded to this fact

Jeans? Probably wont fit. Slacks, chinos, suit pocket, etc. will likely fit.

Sounds like you have already used the Fold for quite sometime with such posts, would you be able to take some pics with it and also give us a mini review of sorts?

Excellent, seems to work well even when Folded, someone here said that it's a bad phone when Folded, hopefully that person posts a review for us since they have used the phone, nobody can be stupid enough to make such statements before actually using the phone, surely.

Really looks good, seems Instagram is well optimized for it to, something that I have been wanting for my iPad for a LONG time.

This phone seems to easily replace a Phone and Tablet at one go, a true convergence device, and as the technology for these matures we should start seeing Foldables with 8-8.5inch Displays in the near future, cannot wait guess my current Apple iPad will be my last tablet.

When Apple eventually release their Foldable, we will see the haters suddenly change.

Same guys who are hating this device were the guys who claimed they didn't need a phone with more than a 3.5inch Display until Apple brought the iPhone 5

I think it is reasonable when compared to current top-of-the-line single-screen flagships, considering the Fold is a 1st Gen product. The tech specs are top-line from what I have read. I have no qualm paying the asking price now if only it has S Pen support.

Mrs: "Wow! That is a nice Samsung. How much is it?"
Mr: "USD$1980"
Mrs: "That's what? Around SGD$2.6K? I see you are considering it"
Mr: "Yeah, if it has the pen like my Note 5"
Mrs: "Well, it's cheaper than your rarely-used new road bike. I supposed you can sell the bike and get this."
Mr: <cheeky grin>

This post (& forum, as a whole) would have a lot more substance sans the targeting of insignificant fan bois, á la, YouTube comments section...

Mr

I can easily justify paying $1980 for the Fold considering it's an actual piece of innovation, and the Specs it carries make it very future proof, 12GB RAM and 512GB UFS3.0 Memory, most phones are only getting 8GB RAM this year, so the Fold is going to work as quite the test device, Samsung thought this device out very well, this is how you release a V1 of a product, load it with as much new tech as possible and make it as future proof as possible.

The only thing that would stop me paying $1980 for the Fold is if it gets competitors that are just as good or better at a lower price, hehe and within the next 24hours we will see a very potent competitor being revealed, me thinks.

Never. After using the Samsung Galaxy 8 I swore I wouldn't buy another android - that thing was bug-ridden plus I'm too heavily into my Apple devices and services.

This week I just donated £2k to a cancer charity - money much better spent than buying a fold. I doubt the device will be any better than the naysayers have been seen. The 4.6" front screen puts me off massively. Why can't it be at least 5.5".

Our respect and appreciation for your contributions. We contributed SGD$10k annually to our charities of choice too. We always encourage our family and friends who can afford to do so and give back to society.

I can afford the SGD$2.6k, no worries, if I want to but I won't as the Fold has no S Pen support. When it does, I will.

Mrs is all Apple. I'm not. Always love the Note series. Our marriage will be tense (and I'll be sleeping on the sofa every night) if we are to argue over our choice of computer platforms, so we don't and I am not about to in this forum either.... lol.

It's funny how people remain glued to their system of choice and won't budge. I'm like that with iOS.

I gave the money because it's a great charity and I have cancer myself (Hodgkins and non Hodgkins). Plus I've been aware by how much money I've spent on myself on tech; I wanted to help someone else out. The charity is quite small and they were delighted with the donation.
