SMS feels ancient once you get used to imessage. Messages come in instantly, they are on my iPad/Mac, you can see when someone is typing and great group messages.
[doublepost=1493322269][/doublepost]
Everyones use case is different. Some can leave imessage fine and others would be a hassle.
Well said. So far in nearly every respect I prefer my S8+ over my iPhone 7Plus. But there is nothing on the Android side that matches iMessage in communicating with the people I need to stay in contact with.

FB Messenger might let me do some of what I need to do with some far flung friends and relatives but that would be my last resort as what I think of FB in general requires a profane expression of thought that would not be very ladylike and would get me suspended.

And to be perfectly candid I would miss the stickers, especially Pusheen. Even my husband sends them.

Fortunately I have no issue using and carrying two phones. In fact, more often than not it's saved my bacon.

Just go here and de-register your phone # for imessage. https://selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage
For someone who's about to switch from iPhone to Android, when is a good time to de-register from iMessages? Can I wait till the last minute? Or should it be done days in advance? Or ???

Truth is, THIS is what has kept me on iPhone for this long. Pretty much everyone I know has an iPhone. Easily 98%.

You can deregister your number from iMessage online. That will solve it. I do it every time I switch to an Android phone

You have to commit. Switch back and forth with imessage and you'll hate life.

I switched over, turned off imessage on my iPhone and haven't had a problem with texts.

Mind you I get imessage withdrawal like most Apple users.

Yea just like facebook messenger (or whatsapp, etc.). Nearly everyone I know has fb messenger. Maybe half, at best, people I know have an iPhone.

I too no longer bother activating imessage when I use my iPhone.

Unlike the ultra-reliable SMS, MMS is an epic bag of hurt which can fail in numerous ways and often does. And if you're lucky enough to get a picture through to the recipient, its resolution is typically butchered to more or less useless.
For pics, that may have been the case a few years ago, but I don't have issues now. I know at one time if I tried to send a full size pic from my iPhone to an Android user it would fail--I often had to resize for it to go through. No such trouble now.

I know you didn't bring it up but as far as SMS speed, it's just about instantaneous for me on AT&T (as well as my wife on TM). I also have an LG Sport smartwatch and with Numbersync on it gets texts almost the exact same time as my LG Sport/iPhone. Same is true for the AT&T Messages web applet, which used to be barely usable. Now without touching the browser I can see a message appear the same time as the phone/watch.

I don't know anyone foolish enough to still send vids via MMS. :)

I switched between s8 and iPhone a few times the last few days.
I always turn off iMessage and turn iphone off and back on.
And then take out the sim.
I had trouble in the past when switching and ever sense I do what I just said it's always worked.

One thing I always did was to also remove my phone number from iMessage on my macs and iPad.

I did it after I got the android phone activated. Disable imessage on your old phone first, then do that link.

That's fine for you but literally 90% of people I frequent with have IOS.

Presumably there are others like me here in Alternatives to iOS and iOS Devices who likewise have less than 90% of their contacts using iPhones.

I don't understand why people say this. (SMS) Texting is no more or less difficult than sending an iMessage. The only difference is the mode of delivery. Unless you have a limited text plan or you're texting internationally, I really don't see what's so special about iMessage.

Yeah. Everyone I know uses Whatsapp, including iPhone owners.
iMessage dealbreaker usage seems to be an American thing.

yep. Unfortunately for me, about 98% of the people I text/message the most have iPhones. I just wish Whatsapp was as popular in the states as it is in other parts of the world.

but yes, I buy what I want. I pre-ordered the 7+ and loved that phone (still do) but the GS8 tempted me away. I think I've owned about 3 dozen android devices and almost every iPhone... yes, I have a problem (as many on this forum do too ;) )

100% of those people have a phone number and an sms app. I never ever understood the need for whatsapp.

For regular texts SMS is perfectly fine. However, for images and video MMS just doesn't cut it against WhatsApp and such. Also group conversations are much better on WhatsApp.

Again, iMessages does all this. I send MMS to my wife and friends all day long. Everything. Group conversations work the same on iMessage. More than one contact in to "to" field and everyone sees the stuff. I think people are hooked on the false notion that that newer is better. That's why everyone drools over the Snaapdragon 835 and then bemoans the 821 like it can't do anything.

You have never sent images or videos via MMS? Or did any group chats?

Group chats are especially a nightmare.

No, I've been using cell phones since the days of the single line LED display and screw on rubber antennas and I've never sent an MMS or did a group conversation.

Yes, iMessage does that if all participants have iPhones. WhatsApp doesn't care what you're running, so naturally for instance my beer league hockey team's chat is on WhatsApp instead of iMessage.

mainly for sharing full resolution videos and photos. Can't do that with SMS/MMS. Whatsapp, FB messenger, iMessage, etc. all share over a data network so you can share videos and photos full resolution. That's my main use.

What network does whatsapp use? A cellular network. Unless you're connected via wifi then both can do it.

So you can't send MMS messages to someone on Android then? Is that what you're saying?
