What network does whatsapp use? A cellular network. Unless you're connected via wifi then both can do it.
[doublepost=1494342608][/doublepost]

So you can't send MMS messages to someone on Android then? Is that what you're saying?

I think you are getting your platforms confused. When I'm on an Android device, I can't send iMessages to my family/friends on their iPhones. It just goes through as green bubbles (SMS/MMS). When that's the case, sharing videos or photos default to a measly 1MB in size. Have you ever watched a video that has been reduced to that file size? It ends up being the size of a postage stamp and is incredibly grainy and blurry. WhatsApp sends those same files over a data network like iMessage does. But, WhatsApp is cross platform. I can share videos from my Galaxy S8 to my brother's iPhone 6S via WhatsApp and they go through at full resolution. MMS allows group chats, etc. to work just fine with my family/friends on iPhone, it's mainly sharing media content where MMS starts showing it's ugly limitations.

No, I can send MMS messages, but as the image quality is butchered and group discussion functionalities are non-existent/poor, it just makes more sense to use WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or a similar product.

OKay I made it past all the "I don't need iMessage" and "I love iMessage" post. In my world I had to do some stuff. Turn off iMessage AND Facetime on all your devices including but not limited too iPads, iMacs, Macbooks, and iPhones. I disabled all my 'stuff' and at the very end turn it off on your iPhone. The most success I had was making sure to also turn off Facetime. Oh and turning iMessage/Facetime on and off will be a disaster. YMMV.

on the flip side, American, no one I know uses whatsapp.

I don't know any adults (in the US) that use whatsapp. Oh and all the people that think they are hip because they use whatsapp.. my teenage daughter and all her friends use KIK, so your old. LOL

Like facebook, adults discovered it and hence it lost its coolness. I have 40+ year old friends who send me snapchat messages of whatever photo/video filter they discover today as if it's brand new.

Was just noodling around here to see how well deregistering imessage was working these days- thought I'd share my work around that works fairly well... isn't without drawbacks but i haven't seen anyone else doing it... I'll put it in bullet points so it's easier to understand:

First follow all the previous steps about turning off imessage and deregistering etc... then:

1. Port phone number to google voice
2. Get new phone number for your SIM card (that you will never give anyone)
3. Use google voice on your android and your iphone for calls and texts (you have to use the google voice or hangout app). So everyone will see your current phone number, nothing changes for them..
4. Use imessage on your iphone using your email address. Make sure you set settings to begin all conversations from email address not your SIM card phone number. Your contacts that use iMessage will never know you are doing this, it will look the same to them.
5. On any other apple device make sure you do not allow SIM card phone number to sync with it (it pops up as an option, just select no).

Now you can switch your sim back and forth at will without worrying about imessage whatsoever. You can imessage at will from your iphone and text/call using google voice on either device. The drawback is that you can't really go android only because you won't get your iMessages obviously... other drawback is you are at the mercy of how well google voice app is working, and at times it has issues... for the most part though this worked really well for me.

This is why I am very hesitant to ever switch back to an iPhone. Back in 2012, I switched from a 3GS to a BB Z10 and it took weeks to figure out why I could not use text messaging.

Apple really oversteps the boundary on this practice and it left a very bitter taste in my mouth. You should not have to step through hoops to receive or send text messages on your mobile phone plan.

Yeah, this is really stepping through hoops. There's about 100 hoops on this page alone. There's also another 75 websites that you have to visit as well.

Too bad this thread did not exist in 2012. And why should Apple make me deregister in order for me receive texts using the device of my choice through my cellular provider?

How does Apple know if you switched phones? I swear some people can't think. If you REGISTER your number into iMessages, then logic would dictate that you need to UNREGISTER your number. Right? Logic.

You're registered to iMessage by just accepting the defaults and not actively opting out of it, so Apple should automate also the reverse operation in the same manner once they detect that the number responds in a device that doesn't support iMessage.

I am always switching back and forth between iPhone and Samsung IMO those are the top dogs. Well I just bought the Galaxy s8 (monster by the way) and I am having a lot of trouble with texts not working. I signed out of iCloud and iMessage like everyone says to do when I google the issue and I even went as far as bringing my phone down to Sprint because the issue still wasn't resolved.

They reset the network settings and all that but I am still having issues with certain people I am not receiving texts from. In a few instances I've had to have some people download Whatsapp or other alternative messaging apps just so they could contact me. It's annoying having to go through this everytime I switch devices so I am wondering if there is perhaps an easy fix for this. Also is there any way to recover all the missed texts I may have gotten during the whole situation?

Appreciate all help.
Yes pick one and stay with it. I havent had an iPhone in seven years and texts work fine with friends that have iPhones. I dont know why so many need to have both. IOS imo isnt anything that i NEED to have. In fact the only Apple device i still have is a first gen iPod.

Then that would be tied to your phone number. The carrier can see that, the phone manufacturer can't. For instance, TCL can't know what my carrier is based on my phone number.
