I've a maxed current 9.7" iPP Cellular and a base model 12.9" Wifi. When I'm at a desk the 12.9" really comes into it's own, and the comic reading experience is truly second to none.

However, I hardly ever use my iPad at a desk and for all other purposes I much much prefer the 9.7". So the 10.5" will unquestionably be my sweet spot.

I like the idea of a 12.9" much more than the reality as it turned out. Totally understand why the 12.9" is a no brainier for some, especially where productivity is concerned, but used as a predominantly fun, portable consumption device I massively prefer the smaller model.

I have the original Air, and was going to go for the 10.5, but this thread gave me something to think about last night. I really don't think the 10.5 will be a good as the 12.9 for my needs. So today the plan the 12.9 for me. I just can't decide on the other options - I don't think I need cellular for it, but I swore i'd never buy a wifi only device again because of the GPS stuff.

I have time to ponder.....

My primary reason for buying the 12.9 iPad Pro 512GB. :D

Exactly. All depends what you use it for. Owning both sizes I realised that the vast majority of my usage is, aside from watching video, in portrait. The 12.9" is unwieldy for the way I like to tote it around the house listening to podcasts etc and for stuffing it in a bag to entertain myself at work.

The 12.9" is exponentially better in split view than the smaller one, the 10.5" isn't going to change that. I thought I'd use split screen a lot more than I do, but mostly its just PiP or the occasional Safari window when I'm watching something.

I'm glad to see Apple persisting with the larger one, from my use the 12.9" is much closer to a laptop experience than the 9.7", regardless of them actually being able to perform the same tasks in theory. My trusty 2013 15" rMBP is going nowhere, but I only use it for work related things, never for fun, and I doubt I'll bother upgrading it till it's on it's absolute knees performance wise.

You must get cellular, to make you choice easier. The IPP 12,9 has the better screen, and wilol certainly have a higher clock speed. Multitasking will also be even better due to the space.

I had the 12.9, but sold it for the 9.7 iPP - I've decided I'm going back to the 12.

I've been experimenting with some recording software (Auria Pro, iSymphonic Orchestra mainly), - the 256GB at $899 for 12" sounds pretty difficult to pass on!

Well I had a massive u turn

Just ordered the iPad Pro 2 12.9 256GB

Feel to take advantage of the IOS 11 features I wanted the bigger screen. I'm going to see how little I use my MacBook and make a decision after that

I will be buying the leather sleeve for it and now in two minds to get the keyboard or Smart Cover. I'm leaning towards the keyboard as I feel it's too big just for the Smart Cover

I am thinking of getting back into purchasing an iPad after I sold off my last one (iPad Mini 4). It was a great media consumption device, but that's all it served for me. With my iPhone 6 Plus, I didn't find a need to use it as often. However, with all of the new iOS toys to play with the iPad, my interest has peaked once again.

I was initially interested in the 10.5" model - adequate size to use one-handed, and seemed like a good compromise between portability and size real estate.

Well, after browsing through this forum, I learned that the 10.5 inch iPad will use iPhone-sized UI for 50/50, whereas the 12.9 would be using iPad-sized UI. That's a big deal breaker for someone whose primary reason of purchasing the device in the first place is a complement to my laptop.

Another is the PPI - I wouldn't say a deal breaker, but it adds the nail in the coffin for me. 264 PPI instead of the 325 in the 12.9 (And I've gone to the store and looked at the 12.9 - images and videos on it look absolutely gorgeous).

Am I being a bit crazy here though? Would love to know other people's thoughts before I order the iPad. (Thinking of getting the 512GB model, maybe without cellular data... Doesn't seem worth it to pay $10/month)

I keep going back and forth, orderered the 12.9, cancelled it and ordered he 10.5

At this point I am pretty sure I will also pick up a 12.9 and spend a few days with both before deciding which to keep

you think it could ever be a laptop replacement for yourself?

I know I will

Think it's the perfect sweet spot.

I fear getting the 12.9 my usage of my MacBook would disappear like it did when I got the 12.9' first gen before getting the 9.7 pro instead
As I think a bit more about it, an 11.7 iPad Pro would probably be the sweet spot for me. Because of the smaller bezels and aspect ratio, it would be slightly smaller than my 11" MBA.

I recommend considering getting a less expensive sleeve (something like the ProCase line) and getting the smart cover AND the smart keyboard. There are times when it is nice at times to simply have the 12.9 Pro w/SC. Super thin and light. It really is like having a physical notepad. And the iPP+ASK is a killer combo as well.

know what you mean

there are times when i want to use the 12.9 when i had one before with just the smart cover. that said i may just use it naked without the keyboard when i want to use it like a normal iPad. like when in bed or on the sofa.

I've just gone the other way. Yesterday, I ordered the 12.9", but I've now cancelled it and ordered the 10.5" instead.
I currently have the 9.7" Pro and the 12.7" Pro......and I really like both of them. It would be ideal to have one that was around 11.5" and be satisfied with just the one though. I use them both rather equally, with the 12.9" mostly at home in the evenings, but also take it to work quite often. I use the 9.7" mostly as a portable iPad (it fits in my handbag), but even use it at home in the evenings. I've always been confused about which one I like more. I love the size of the 12.9" but the portability of the 9.7". Lately, I have been deleting apps and content from my 12.9" with 128GB to make room for new things.....so I thought that was the iPad that I should upgrade. However, after discussing with my husband, I've changed to upgrade the 9.7" to a 10.5" with 512GB to boot. The theory is that all the apps, photos and video, etc, can be portable and with me in the 10.5" which would then become my main iPad, with the 12.5" staying at home for evening use including forums, web browsing and watching video (often while holding my smaller Pro in my hands.....my form of multitasking).
I've felt a bit torn about which way to go and hope that I don't regret my decision. The other benefit is that my husband will get my 9.7" iPad Pro....and he isn't interested in my 12.9", it's too big for him for bed usage and commuting on the train. So I'll keep the 12.9" as it is for now and wait for 12.9" gen 3 or 4.....and keep the 10.5" as my main iPad.

I just cancelled my order for the 10.5" and put in an order for the 12.9".

Last year I bought the 12.9" in January, 128GB Cellular (before 256 was available). Later in the year when the 9.7" came out, I bought one of those too. My thought at the time was that the 12.9" while awesome, was pretty big, and a smaller portable one would be better. I intended to try out both and either keep the 12.9 and return the 9.7, or just sell the 12.9 and keep the 9.7.

I ended up keeping both, and have used both fairly extensively. I really, really like the screen real estate of the 12.9, and truthfully there aren't a lot of occasions where the 12.9 is truly "too big" for me.

So I've decided to upgrade my 12.9" to the new model, and will sell both the existing iPad's I have for the new unit. I also like how with the new 12.9", I can continue to use the same silicone back cover and smart keyboard as the design is the same.

I tried using 12.9" with keyboard last year as a mobile replacement. Although it handles nearly all tasks admirably, when my desktop was down for repair and I had to use it for *everything* I found having to use hand on screen at a desk tiring and uncomfortable. Plus theres all sorts of little things you can't do in a mobile OS that makes it a harder proposition as an only computer for an enthusiast/power user.

Then went MacBook, and now on new MBP 13". Probably going with 10.5 without keyboard mostly for consumption. To get another 12.9" would cannibalize the 13" and be more bulky than I need.

I can continue to use the same silicone back cover and smart keyboard as the design is the same.

Just thought about the camera flash, the existing 12.9" case doesn't have a "hole" for the flash. So it may fit but will probably cover up the flash. Wish Apple was making back covers for these new iPads...

Hopefully the keyboard is the same!

I have the first gen Ipad pro 12.9.

I use it on bed or couch, usually on the amazing T-stand. It turned out to be too big for portability in house (you cannot hold it with one hand) and outside house (doesn't fit well in bags and feels awkward to pull it out e.g. in the subway).

Also, most of the times I hold it relatively close to my eyes, so the extra screen is not very useful, actually it is tiring to the eyes at nights.

Reading pdfs is one of my main activities. I experimented and saw that an approximately 10.5 is the smallest screen size that would STILL allow me to read comfortably pdfs. I guess that Apple came to a similar conclusion and that is why they came up with this form factor.

I ordered last night the new 10.5. I plan to also keep the 12.9, at least initially. 12.9 might be better for drawing, where seeing more is always better and this activity is usually done on a desk, with the ipad held at a greater distance. I have tried the 9.7 and it definitely feels small for this task.

So far, when I studying in bed I have been using my rMb more than my ipad pro 12.9. The 12.9 feels too heavy to hold it up with your arms. It is not so much the actual weight, but that the center of gravity is far from where you are holding it, so you need more strength to hold it up compared with a smaller size object even if it is at the same weight or slightly higher weight.

I am looking forward to my 10.5.

Hopefully, it will become my main device. 12.9 felt too big for such a role.

i ordered mine on very.co.uk

good job i did when i did as now all iPad pros are out of stock. 10.5 and 12.9

I would love the 12.9, but just can't handle it comfortably aside from on a desk/table. Looking forward to next year when they slim down the size/weight. I feel like the 10.5 will be a happy medium between the two.

I would be surprised if there is any slimming down of the size or weight of the 12.9. I would NOT be surprised if the 2nd gen 12.9 Pro will be the last one of that form factor.

Having seen the footprint overlays, the 10.5 is every so slightly larger than the 9.7 and far smaller than the 12.9. I think that there will be a comparable REDUCTION from the 12.9 form factor. Somewhere around 11.7.

Obviously these are nothing more than ramblings of one who is on their 5th cup of coffee of the morning. :)

You are probably right. Instead of focusing on reducing size/weight of the 12.9, just go ahead and create a new form factor altogether. As long as they can keep multitasking functionality the same, I don't think many would mind.

Maybe slightly? Only because I realized after the fact that it doesn't use the 12.9" resolution at 326ppi, as I wanted more space for running apps and multitasking. But we do get a little more space. I hated the iPhone 6 Plus, so didn't want to make that mistake again by getting something too big. I've used the 12.9" a few times, and the main thing is that it just seems a bit unwieldy for everyday use while holding it. Especially with a case or the keyboard attached. Maybe someday when they remove most of the bezel and make it thinner and lighter it will be more viable for portable use. I definitely think a larger display size will be key for getting things done on the iPad in the future, just like computer and phone displays have gotten bigger. But it's just not there yet for me.

I'd be all over an 11.7 Pro if it were a slightly shrunken version of the 12.9.

Well I was thinking I'd be sticking with 12.9, but I'm considering going to 10.5. Someone talk me off the ledge...

I LOVE my 12.9, but it's just not as portable as I'd like it to be, and I wind up using my 7+ in bed at night because the 12.9 is a bit too heavy to be comfortable.

Of course, I'm afraid I'll get the 10.5 and regret it.

Nope...I had the 12.9 but got rid of it because I found the size uncomfortable and awkward (too large and too heavy) to use for extended periods while holding it with only one hand. If the 12.9 is going to be sitting on a table or sitting in your lap most of the time, it would probably be fine.

I can see something else happening... As iOS continues to improve, there are going to be more and more people (myself included) who want to use an iOS device as their main computer. Instead of going smaller, I can see them going larger and releasing an iPad that is more of a desktop version. Perhaps something like a 15" screen, with smaller bezels and a built in stand like the Surface has. Then having both a smaller (10.5) and larger iPad could actually make sense, just like many folks have an iMac and a MacBook.
