I regret that I have but one "thumbs up" to give to this post. You nailed it. My resolve is weakening... should the 2017 iPad go on sale again, I don't know if I could resist. :)
It's 289/389 at Staples through Saturday. One of my co-workers bought one from Target and had them price match Staples and then used their Red Card.

If you live in the US and are a Costco member, I believe you can get it on sale for 319/359 through the end of August. It's interesting that Staples has the best price on the 32 GB model, and Costco has the best price on the 128 GB model.

I played with the iPad Pro 10.5 in the Apple Store. Yes, the screen is very nice. However, I don't look at the iPad 9.7's screen and think, "This looks like crap! Now that I've seen 120 Hz, I can never go back to 60 Hz!" 60 Hz seems plenty smooth to me. I didn't do an A/B comparison in the store, so I couldn't even tell you in what ways the Pro's screen looks better. It's not like the jump to Retina, which, to me, was huge. The iPhone 4 spoiled me, and I couldn't wait for the rest of Apple's products with screens to be updated.

I'm considering this one to replace my dog slow iPad Mini. I'd prefer a new mini if it wasn't 2 generations old and more expensive. Probably will get one at the Verizon store since they have some very nice pricing with contract and I want an let model this time instead of my usual wifi buys.

I bought the 10.5 and the 2017 and ended up returning the 10.5. It's better than the 2017 but it isn't remotely close to being 300+ dollars better.
If you had said that the 9.7” Pro wasn’t worth the extra cost compared to this year’s 9.7”, I would have agreed. As it is, the 10.5” is certainly worth the extra cost. Or at least, it is for me because it is an upgrade in every way, from the RAM to the bezels. The 10.5” is what made me hold off on last year’s 9.7” Pro, which was so incremental compared to my former Air 2.

Yeah, it's one of the dumbest things I've heard in quite some time.
It's quite understandable. I've discovered that there are some Apple customers who have extremely sensitive senses. The difference in a few grams can be significant and they have super-human, X-Men style vision that allows them to spot individual pixels on a retina display from 10 feet away.

lol, 32 gram difference and it is now a brick

I've no idea what 32 grams is in ounces. Sounds like a silly European measurement, but nonetheless the weight differential is very relevant. Not only does the regressed 2017 model have the look of a thicker tablet (because it is) but side by side weight comparison will always have the Air 2 winning the Pepsi Taste Test. Still, if the way you come to terms with that is attempting to make the weight differential be irrelevant in your head then don't let me get in your way.

The difference in a few grams

It's 10% heavier than the Air 2. It also looks chunky and old fashioned. But as long as you're happy then don't mind me pointing out its flaws.

32g is around 1oz or 0.07lb.

We have both the iPad Air 2 and 2017 iPad in the household and I literally have to place them side by side to figure out which device is which. The extra 1.4mm and 32g is barely noticeable. The difference really isn't as obvious as the switch from iPad 4 to iPad Air (658g/1.44lb to 469g/1lb or ~29%).

That said, decreased reflectivity on the Air 2 is definitely helpful in brightly lit environments.

God you are that type of person, huh?... Too damn lazy to look up the conversion from grams to ounces (I mean you were already online to type your reply)? You make us Americans look like morons.

The 2017 iPad is just fine for most people. Yes - some people such as yourself want the latest greatest stuff - but for others that will literally just use the iPad as a consumption device this is just fine.

Thinner and lighter isn't always better. I have specifically stayed away from the newest MacBook Pro for this exact reason.

How is the Air 2 the "latest and greatest stuff"? Please explain when the 2017 iPad came out, well, this year.

You notice that's it's chunky and heavier when you carry it around all day. That's why thin and light wins out here, IMO.

Most of the world uses metric. ;)

It might be that officially but see how England kicked and screamed when the EU forced them to adopt it. The population refuses to use it as it's not taught in schools.

You do realize that the latest and greatest Pro 10.5 is the same weight as the 2017 iPad, right? I highly doubt any of the folks upgrading from the Air 2 or Pro 9.7 to the Pro 10.5 even notice the minor weight gain.

Mind, I actually do carry around my Pro 9.7 all the time. For a couple of weeks though, I carried the 2017 iPad instead (was testing iOS 11 Beta). I find the 0.07 lb weight and 1/16 inch thickness difference negligible. Weight difference is like a snack size bag of chips or something.

Sorry to break it to you, but no-one under the age of 50 has any issues understanding metric in the UK. In fact, people under the age of 30 don't understand any imperial measurements other than pints and miles - and even then, they still understand litres and kilometers.

Absolutely love the iPad, much better than my original iPad Air, and I don't miss the anti-reflective technology on the Air 2 (that work gave me)

Who told you that about England? I'm yet to find someone from the UK that struggles to use the metric system...

Me too! I got mine yesterday at the Verizon store. While there I looked at and held the smaller Pro and the iPad and couldn't tell much difference between the two except for the price tag! The screens looked nearly identical, the speed seemed the same and the weight difference was so slight as to be a non-issue.

I am really enjoying my iPad (5th gen). I think it is a great complement to my MacBook Air. It was hard to justify purchasing a second device when the 32GB iPad was $600, but with all of the improvements to iOS and the improved processor plus $300 price point, it is pretty easy to justify. As I have mentioned before, you can now buy an MBA for $800 on sale plus an iPad for $300, so for $1,100, you have two very capable devices that complement each other nicely.

Use the MBA when you have heavy productivity requirements. Use the iPad for light productivity and content consumption. Use both devices together to have two screens available. It's a very flexible arrangement, and the price point for the new iPad makes it a very practical option.

I can't imagine how much of a weakling one would need to be for the negligible weight difference between the Air 2 and the 2017 iPad to bother them.

Agreed. But I think most seem to complain about the thickness with 2017 iPad Over the weight. But I can look past that and appreciate the battery life and A9 processor.
