I was curious if anyone out there has the same mindset as I do that from now on I will only ever buy:
  • iPhone
  • Nexus
I recently came from an AT&T branded Note 4 and must say while I liked the hardware... the bloatware / locked bootloader / software update, or lack there of, were all pretty much crap. Waaaaay too much motivation by both OEM and the carriers to do a planned obsolesence type thing of letting phone support die off quickly in order to A) save money by not having to pay engineers to test the latest android updates and B) push customers towards upgrading to the newest hardware. The only two phone types that get real updates directly from the source (Windows Phones and Blackberries don't count :p) are Nexus and iPhones.

Anyone else feel the same way? That the only phone options are Nexus or iPhones? Why do you (or don't you) feel this way?

I'm kind of in the same boat, I like the pure experience. Not only pure software, but pure hardware without gaudy ugly branding. I have an iPhone 6s+ and will probably grab a 6P from swappa when they are readily available and cheap. I'm quite tired of having to wait for cell phone companies to update my phone, the bloatware, crappy customer service and hardware quality. All these oem's who are doing badly, cry me a river, they brought it upon themselves.

The only other phone which caught my attention is the 950XL, but I'm disappointed in the continuum implementation and will just sit back and see how it works. I have a feeling I'll be able to buy one at half price 2-3 months after release.

Currently on a 6S+. Swore off android after a bad stint with a Edge Plus, but I'm thinking the 6S+ is almost too much of a phone for me, and I'm really tempted by the Oneplus X. Its modesty is sexy.

Again, that is not really android. That is a touchwiz skin. Go for the Oneplus X or the Nexus 5X.

Well I usually buy the latest phones from Samsung and Apple and every year I always stick with the Samsung product and end up selling the iPhones.

I just bought the 6S Plus last week thinking I will give iPhone another try but I'm already miserable with it so back to the Note 5.

As for just limiting yourself to 2 products is being short sighted as you really don't know what will come out in the next few years. Who knows, there may be a new company that comes out with something much better than current offerings.

For me, it is Android or nothing else...

But yes, I prefer close to stock Android experience but not for the overrated reason of updating it faster. I just like that pure Android is smooth and fast. I was playing with my gf's new Moto E 2nd gen and it is smoother than my LG G3 Beat which cost me $130 more. Of course it has the newer Snapdragon 410 and Lollipop 5.1 but stock Android always feels smoother to me than a customized one. My Beat still has advantage of removable battery, louder sound, and better cameras. Ialso don't mind getting Nexus if it is unlocked. But the whole unlocked bootloader and faster updates, those aren't the reasons why I might prefer Nexus over any other Android device. I actually like the variety it offers. More to tinker with and I wouldn't get bored of it if was all too perfect.

I saw The Verge's Marshmallow review and it really does seem more like Android 5.3 than 6.0. The overratedness of updating software and we probably won't see Marshmallow on most Androids until 6-8 months from now. Lollipop isn't as bad as it seems but my Nova Prime crashes on it and the newer one sucks. Lollipop has enough reasons for me to update and enough reasons for me to stick to KitKat. Since I am a fan of KitKat chocolate, I might just stick to a 2-year old software update a little longer. An oldie but still a goodie.

For me Nexus only. No way iPhone anymore, iOS feels extremely dated, like something from 2008, not 2015. Yeah Apple makes great hardware and beautiful design, but man iOS just sucks IMO.

The iPhone 7 I'm way more interested to see iOS 10, than just the cool new phone design that's obviously coming. But they need to majorly revamp iOS.

The basic layout and ux hasn't changed since iOS 1

Didn't you have a thread where you were trying to mimick android functions by jailbreaking? How did that go?

It went so well, I bought a Nexus 6 like 30 days later LOL :)

Now typing this on my rooted and ROM'd Note 5.

I seriously went open minded getting the iPhone 6 Plus last winter, and I was blown away, meaning blown away how basic and dumbed down the OS still was. Like shockingly surprised what it didn't do yet and custom options it should've had. Was a big letdown to me.

Lucky you're not on Verizon. I couldn't do anything cool with my note 5 :(. Im switching to T-Mobile if they add free data for Netflix like rumored

I am pleasantly surprised by my Note 5. Is a beast. With 6h Screen On time all day long battery life, and warp speed butter smooth.

But the rooting and ROM is a big reason for that. Thank God for T-Mobile, which I just switched to in August from ATT Nazis.

I have a number of criteria for a phone hardware and often neither Apple, Google or Samsung can match those so I'm open to all contenders. Most Android phones have become more or less like stock Android with minor extras from the OEM. Even Touchwiz is no longer as bad as it once was though it still has plenty of bloatware.

This is pretty much how I view things. I'm currently a happy iPhone user but if I had to use an android phone I feel like I would be perfectly content with either of the nexuses. That being said the last Nexus I had the Galaxy Nexus, which I detailed my frustrations on in a different thread, really ruined my experience with android. I know alot of improvements have been made and it's nice to see android finally offer system level series like doze, app permissions, and fingerprint support. But I'm wary of investing money in something that could still degrade in performance in about a year. That price is mighty tempting though. I won't consider any of other options simply because of my preference for the latest and greatest android build and security is important to me.

Yeah the nexus line used to be just a testing device, but it's become much more than that and as such the quality has drastically improved. The performance is buttery smooth on the nexus 6, which I even underclocked to 4/5 speed.

I think Nexus 6P is a strong 3rd best phone after the Note 5 and S6 Edge+. Played around with a Nexus 6P yesterday and while nice it's not as premium as #1 and #2. iPhone is too dumbed down for a power user. I need things like BubbleUPnP, JuiceSSH, Flud, Caustic, EveryCircuit, etc. which is only available or came first on Android.

Adguard (not on Google Play but can download direct from their site and side load)

For audio and music production besides Caustic there's G-Stomper Studio, Audio Evolution and SunVox.

IRC for Android

DroidFish chess

Nokia HERE offline maps since Android WIFI devices have built-in GPS unlike iPads

RAR and ZArchiver Pro to cover the two best archival standards RAR and 7zip

My Cloud Player (Soundcloud)

Fing network scanner

KEGS Apple IIgs emulator (pretty much 100% compatible and faster than my real IIgs with Zip GSX accelerator card and so simple).

Uae4all2 Amiga emulator but a little more challenging to set up. He also has a Basilisk II Mac emulator but early Macs were boring compared to IIgs and Amiga.

DavDrive to make Android devices a file server so you can browse/map drive from Windows with Start > Run > \\ip:port\folder (wack wack ip colon port wack folder name if it shows a silly smily face)

tinyCam Monitor PRO and IP Webcam Pro to turn phones into security cameras especially the great but cheap $25 prepaid phones like Moto G 2013

RF Analyzer to experiment with Software Defined Radio

ODB Fusion to read live car stats and error codes to fix your own car

Did I mention BubbleUPnP is awesome and easy to cast movies from one device over WIFI to Chromecast, other tablets/phones and Windows?

Just curious, what is missing on jailbroken ios for you? I think I remember you are a heavy widget user, which even jb ios is definitely weak on.

I just go for what is best for me at the time. I have had multiple blackberries, iphones, htc, Samsung and now am rocking a Moto. The two best phones I ever owned are still the iphone 3gs and the Galaxy Note 2. Thought I would go big with the Note 3 and it was a piece of junk. Iphone 6 plus? Crappy phone, bad digitizer and the keyboard was miserable. Right now this Moto X pure is a heck of a phone, we will see how it holds up. Who knows

If they had better battery life, I probably would restrict myself to either iPhone or Nexus. But battery life on these phones is inadequate in my opinion, so I need to look elsewhere.

(Am refering to the smaller iPhone and Nexus.... the larger ones are too big for me)
