I'd be more than happy with an iPad Air if it had Face ID. I have so many problems with Touch ID, after this MacBook I have, I'll probably never buy another product with a fingerprint sensor. Touch ID usually works reliably for me for about a week, then it just doesn't work at all - for every Touch ID product I've used since the 5S(?). Luckily the MacBook at least falls back to authenticating with the Apple Watch.

My 2017 IPP was terrible with touch ID--very similar to your experience, I'd set it up and it would stop working after a bit until I set it up again. So far TID is working much better on my new Air, but I've only had it for a week.

I did downgrade from a 2020 Pro to an Air. Once I got the Air and heard the speaker. I was horrified! When I held my iPad Air in portrait, the sound only came out of the left side. I didn't know they kept the 2 speaker design. I returned it and got the Pro. So much better!

I‘ve had my 13-inch iPad Air for about a week now and I’m absolutely fine with Touch ID. It works almost everytime and it’s easy to reach, so I don’t have any complaints. I much preferred Touch ID to Face ID on the iPhone as well, I still miss it. I’m probably one of the few people who would be happy if they released an iPhone with Touch ID on the power button instead of Face ID.

Frankly to want touch id or face id is high risk to ones personal safety. I use a six digit code on my mini and my sammy s9 ultra. Can’t understand why anyone would want face or touch id.

I am looking to dump my ipad mini soon and get an ipad air base model for simple blogging.

How is it unsafe to our personal safety? Thats a wild claim I’ve never seen before.

I don't need the specs of the Pro, but downgrading from 120hz to 60hz would be impossible after using ProMotion for several years both on iPhone and iPad.

I was actually getting used to the 60hz refresh rate. What made me give up the Air were the speakers. It was so bad!

I was going to upgrade from a 2018/3 generation 12.9 inch iPad Pro to the 12.9 inch 2024 iPad Air. Reason being that the biggest screen was my main purchasing factor in order to keep all of my dialysis and health related notes the fact that it only has an M2 processor as opposed to an M4 processor. It was not even a concern. I also didn’t care about quality of the scream.

About two days prior to me placing the order for the iPad Air. I had a chance to buy a new M2 12.9 inch iPad Pro for about 50 percent off in store (not Apple). I jumped; it’s faster than my 2018 model - better screen, more storage space, more ram so win-win win. I don’t need the M4. Probably when it comes time to update the next model will be at an M8 and I’ll end up getting the M6.

That’s the kicker it’s not a downgrade. It is an upgrade and even if I went from the 12.9 inch iPad Pro to a 12.9 inch iPad Air it would still be an upgrade; faster processor, better screen, more ram, increased storage space, etc..

now, if I downgraded to the second generation, iPad Air or second generation iPad Pro is that would truly be a downgrade.

In the end I went with the 13" M4 iPad Pro. While I probably could have gotten by just fine with the Air, the screen of the pro is stunning.

New York City clubs had more than a dozen people given a spiked drink so they would pass out. 3 people died. All of them had their iPhones opened while knocked out. They were robbed via the iPhones.

If every phone and iPad had six digit code no matter what you do that type of robbery would have never happened.

you have to think what are phone and tablet companies doing.

your face or your fingers are what is needed. Not a six digit code.

If you want real security you could do the code first then the face.

I be paranoid.

Face ID
6 digit #
2fa via 3rd party app

Sometimes if I’m impatient it’s really annoying. And I’m not going to pay $10 for a Budweiser 0.0 in a club, so….

Two reasons, one solveable one not immediately solvable

1. excessively dry hands or maybe excessively clammy hands
I have super dry hands and in winter Touch ID can be a bit hit & miss unless I keep on top of my moisturising regimen

2. living in a swamp

Despite the winter issue I prefer Touch ID by a huge margin over Face ID - it's faster to validate for me, doesn't rely on orientation, and I don't have to look directly at the unit.

Do you have any pro devices? I can't stand to use an old iPhone because it looks like a pure blurry mess to me. If you don't see it, be happy and save some money. It is borderline unusable for me now.

I am sure I would adjust if I was only using a device without promotion, but being my iPhone has it, it truly is that annoying for me.
I can’t live without ProMotion on an iPad but have to problem to do so with an iPhone or MacBook…
