The mini got the most attention from everyone, but the basic ipad is still the most popular one, like tim said.

Anyone getting the new 9th generation? Why as opposed to the other ipads in the lineup?

I had a 6th gen that I sold to buy a new one, but don't know which one.

The 6th 128GB cost me 399 euros when it came out. The new 9th 256GB cost 533 euros. That's a lot, not as cheap as before, and still same design.

Might go with the Air. The Pros seem much more than I need, but I want my new ipad to last me 5 years.

I have a Mini 5 and have no interest in the Mini 6, but I am very interested in the iPad 9. But I happen to like the "classic" form-factor and the accessories that are available for it that aren't available for the Air and Pro.

Having said that, if a person is not enamoured with the classic design or accessories, then the only reason to consider the 9 is price.

Honestly you should just get the iPad 8 preowned or on a closeout sale.

Almost nothing changed between the 8 and the 9

With iPadOS getting bloated (around 14-16GB used by OS+Other), moving up to 64GB would be quite helpful at this point. Apple certified refurb is like just $60 cheaper. For the relatively small savings, I'd rather grab the 9th gen.

I don’t understand what position you are arguing from.
Who has 32 GB?

Not the original poster which is who I was replying to

What sort of things will you use the iPad for? I guess just basic stuff like browsing, videos, email, maybe a bit of FaceTime? The Air might just be a better buy if you're aiming for 5+ years, given the extra RAM (which is likely to be the first bottleneck way before the A13/A14 chip comes into play). The new design/ colour options might also be nice with the Air if you're willing to spend a bit extra to treat yourself.

Regardless of storage, still depends on pricing whether it's worth going with the older model. As I mentioned, for something like $60 diff, I'd rather go with the newer model.

@Sensamic
How much storage do you need and what's pricing like in your country? That's something to consider.

In the US, it's $749 for Air 4 256GB and $799 for iPad Pro 11 128GB. If you think you'll be fine with 128GB, then the Pro 11 (with pretty overkill hardware) is likely to age better than the Air 4 for the relatively small $50 diff.

Pretty big price gap between Air 4 256GB/Pro 11 128GB and the $479 iPad 9th gen 256GB though.

You started stalking about storage, not me or the original poster… LOL

At $60 maybe I’m with you…

But if it gets much more than that you’re starting to talk about a third of the entire price and money would be better spent getting a newer one next generation

Apple upgraded almost nothing at all from the eighth to the ninth generation, which would lead us to believe that the 10th generation might finally do a more substantial update.

Money would be better spent on the 10th generation with actual tangible updates

You're assuming 10th gen is a major upgrade without knowing what changes it brings.

The reality is it's not really worth upgrading from an iPad 8th gen to 9th gen, and it will likely be the same case for 9th gen to 10th gen. From 6th gen or older to 9th gen, though? The cumulative improvements are quite worthwhile.

Nearly every single improvement of which is on the 8th -- they changed literally almost nothing.

So - to your point - if you can get a great discount, the 8th is a steal.

If I had the extra cash, I think I would buy an Air or Pro now. That said, the budget iPad is a great middle ground between the tiny Mini and the much larger Pro. It's size makes it real nice for a digital diary, daily planner, or notepad but has a large enough screen for FaceTime, gaming, or looking at documents.

I own the 7th Gen iPad and overall, it's great. I could only begin to imagine how nice the 9th Gen would be.

If you can get a great discount. I'm finding 8th gen deals are pretty thin on the ground. I've actually been on the lookout for sales on the 8th gen for the past few months and more often than not, it's sold out even at MSRP.

Mind, the only change from 7th gen to 8th gen was the chipset. Granted it was a very nice performance boost. There are more changes from 8th to 9th gen (chipset, front camera, display) than 7th to 8th gen (chipset). If one often uses video conferencing, the camera improvement is quite significant (from crappy 720p to 12MP).

I am seriously considering it, here's why:

  1. primarily to replace the 9.7"iPad Pro we've had since 2016; my wife uses it for streaming, workout videos, email, browsing and it continues to be totally fine for this use case
  2. The IPP's batter is starting to show its age but still very usable in almost use case situations
  3. The center stage camera is a huge plus as both kiddos can actually be in the frame when FaceTiming the grandparents
  4. We can use the same Smart Keyboard and penciil
  5. We can get $150 from Apple as a trade in

The biggest thing holding me back is (1) - the alternative is to use it until its dead, which probably is another couple of years and warrants giving up the $150 trade in

Where I live the 8th gen 128GB is 100 euros cheaper than the 256GB 9th gen right now.

Still, I would wish to upgrade to the more powerful chipset, even though it’s not a huge improvement.

I think my choices are the iPad 9 256GB, iPad Air 4 256GB or iPad Pro 11 256GB M1. I use the tablet a lot since I don’t have a laptop (iMac instead), and I want something nice, but Pro is too expensive, though it’s a really really nice machine.

Biggest problem for me is having the same design another 4 years.

I pre-ordered the 9th gen for that exact reason. Haven't used an iPad much before, so it's a nice middle ground without breaking my budget. iPhone 12, MacBook Pro (few years old, but works great) and iPad 9th gen.

Neat, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Do you plan to get a pencil or crayon to go with it? I can only speak for myself but being able to handwrite notes, highlight text, and markup photos definitely pushed the iPad into my main device, even though I really want a MacBook Air to go with it.

I’ve got a gen 6 iPad that I’m trading in for $150 to get the new one. Double the space, still compatible with the first gen pencil and it’s a bit larger. Also that new front facing camera with Center Stage. Seems a great upgrade to me for something I mainly use on the couch at night for browsing and doodling, or whenever I start traveling again to watch films.

Depends what you do with it. For 5 years heavy use I’d probably get the iPad Pro 11. It should easily last 5 years. It’s not much more than the Air.

I bought a Air 4 for my wife and 8th gen for me. For my light use it’s perfect, no complaints. Even with light photo editing it’s still fast and 9th should be even better. But I also have a good laptop so the basic iPad made sense.

I hate notches and I never use the home button.

I rather have slightly more bezel than a notch. iPhone SE until they ditch the notch.

iPad mini 6 should be awesome.

Why?
If it gets the job done and the price is right….right?
I was perfectly fine with the iPad 6 gen until a month or two ago, when I started getting tired of the design and how heavy it was. I sold it a few weeks ago for 200 euros (half of what it cost me, great) because I wanted something with a new form factor that was easier to hold and have a bigger screen.

Air seems the best choice, but at the same time I think it's too expensive at 700 euros for 256GB having no FaceID or 120Hz. That's why I'm thinking going again to the basic iPad, because it doesn't have those features but it costs 509 euros for 256GB, but then again... I would be stuck with that design another 3/4 years, which is not bad, but I wanted something fresh.

I'm really interested in the ultra-wide front camera with center stage. Although I don't know how effective it is considering Apple is insistence in putting it on the portrait top side instead of the landscape top side (Apple's own smart cover prop the iPad in landscape), but I think that's an awesome addition in the age of zoom.

I mean the rest are just icing on the cake. Imo center stage is the most alluring feature, considering this was an iPad Pro exclusive. Kudos to Apple for bringing it down to the cheapest iPad.

But at the same time, this iPad is still stuck with bluetooth 4.2. Seriously Apple, you don't even bother giving it Bluetooth 5 despite the SoC update?

I know rui no onna posted back but man do your research. 9th Gen got more better upgrades than the 8th Gen ( A13, TrueTone, 12MP Front Camera with centre stage, 1080p video recording at the front camera to name a few which in itself was only the CPU as well as a neural engine compared to the 7th generation one
