US cell carriers sunsetted 2G years ago. AT&T is sunsetting 3G no later than 2/22/2022. Verizon was supposed to sunset 12/31/2019, then pushed that back to 12/31/2020, and now it’s 12/31/2022. Verizon quit activating 3G devices on 6/30/2018. AT&T quit within the last year or maybe a little longer.

Yeah, my daughter got a notice from T-Mobile that as of 1-22-2022, her 6S will be inoperable on their network.

That one was for a network update that already passed (Jan 29, 2021). I don't believe that's the 3G shutdown which hasn't happened yet.

No I get it. Australia and Singapore have shuttered 2G as well. But interestingly the iPhone still support 2G. It’s interesting as the cheapest iPad might be attracting people in countries where 2G is still in use.

Meanwhile, in my country, the top three carriers don’t even support VoLTE on iPhones…

Just came back from :apple: Store with my silver iPad 9th gen 🎉

I was waiting for mini because my main usage would be newspapers, magazines and forums etc. and scrolling is a huuuge part of it. Jelly issue put me off (the ones in store were really noticable) but I also realized that with mini I would buy a screen protector and case because it's 50% more expensive (in AU) and (let's face it) prettier. Whereas with base iPad i'll just use it as is and won't care if screen is broken/scratched because it's way cheaper to replace that screen.

In a way I'm happy that this jelly thing happened because it saved me from paying almost double for what I paid today. And it'll get the job done. I believe screen is a huge part of decision making in a device that's basically plain screen, so I went with something proven and even better than last year's. I'll wait for next edition of mini to give this iPad to mum (her Air 2 will be obsolote in a couple of years anyway)

You're right! I shouldn't be trying to think this through right now - I'm running on two hours of sleep in the last 40 hours.
Ouch man, I feel for you and I thought I had sleep issues, been there a few times like 5 hrs in 3 days. Try some melatonin.

The regular non-pro were always the most popular (XR, 11, and 12 in their respective years of release). Expect the 13 to be the same.
I remember many of the YouTubers and tech reviewers being very dismissive of the XR when it released as they clearly didn’t get why anyone would want it over the XS at the time, and most seemed flat out confused over why this weird experiment of an iPhone-X-style phone on a budget (with a screen that dared to not even be OLED) existed. Needless to say the XR outsold everything and proved to be the best phone for most people that year.

The technorati on these here very forums said an LCD iPhone with sub 1080p resolution would never sell, that Apple wasted their time creating the Liquid Retina display yet here I am, three years later, typing this post on my XR, which has to be the best iPhone I have owned.

I may get Mom a 9. She doesn’t like the Air (she prefers the home button) or the weight. I love everything about the Air 2020 except the weight, but I was fine drawing on a 7th gen iPad until I got the Air.

Frankly, I’m annoyed that Apple raised the price of the 9th gen 256gb by $50, not surprised though. Yes, previous gens maxed out at 128gb, but still. If I get us 9s, I’ll wait for sales at least $100 off on that 256gb. Though I’m more interested in the Surface Pro 8 at this point.

Just got mine today and been setting it up and having a play inbetween meetings at work.

Firstly, as expected, it’s a remarkable upgrade over the iPad 3. No surprise to anyone, but it’s very very cool. So fast to do… well anything I wanted really :)

It’s heavier than I imagined, but that’s fine. I’ve bought an Apple Smart Cover for it, might see if something is available for the back to stop it getting scuffed up over time.

Very pleased with it anyway, and at £320, it’s excellent value for money. Now to work out what’s been added to iPad OS as my 3 will be a few versions back!
Hi - I’m in the uk - it doesn’t look like I can get hold of one of these until mid-November… how were you so lucky? 😐

I’m interested in the iPad 9 instead of the others but my reason may be a bit niche.

I actually like that it still has the lightning port. When I go travelling I like to pack light and the less things I take the better. By just carrying a lightning cable, a MagSafe duo and a usb-c power brick, I'm able to charge my iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, and the iPad 9. That's 4 devices covered with just one lightning cable in a very compact package.

Not all at the same time of course, but the iPad and AirPods have good battery so I probably won't charge those as often as the others.

I’m with you on that, I’m still lightning on everything up to and including my 13 Pro, and would be irritated having to mix and match cables. I wish if Apple were going to USB C they’d just have done it across the board at the same time, rather than dripping it out arbitrarily as a “pro” (but not pro iPhone) feature.

I too like to pack light when I travel and over the years I've progressively optimized my gear bag to a single setup regardless of the devices I take with me. This is the type of cable that I use. I can charge multiple devices with a single cable (only limited by the power capacity of the power brick). I use two cables so that I have the ability to simultaneously charge 2 devices of the same connector type.

(Bonus tip: the best travel gear bag, IMO, for cables, chargers, connectors, etc. is at.... Five Below, for $5. It can store a TON of stuff.)

I’m a little disappointed to see that of all the recent new stuff Apple has brought out, it’s the standard iPad that still isn’t available in the UK for another month - and even then, the date keeps slipping back (I’m talking about the base silver model): everything else seems more readily available…

Agreed. I actually ended up having to put off ordering due to unrelated reasons. Once I did try to finally order (using trade credit combined with EDU discount, so through Apple is a must), the dates slipped to late November. Funnily enough, sometimes the odd Starlight iPad Mini 6 is available for same-day delivery for a few extra bucks, but for now I've fought the temptation.

Hopefully, the shipping dates gradually improve for new iPad 9 orders, but I won't hold my breath. Thinking of saying "screw it" and just ordering/dealing with the wait. No need for me to replace my Apple Pencil 1 anyway, and I'd sooner get the 256 GB iPad 9 for less than the 64 GB Mini 6.

Anyone else having a hard time deciding between the classic silver back/black front combo and space grey?

If I was in the market for an iPad 9, I'd go for the silver. It's something different having had a white front previously.

I prefer the Space Grey on the Pros though, it blends better with the camera module I think.

Agreed. Yeah, I'm only putting a case on it for travel. Otherwise, only a smart cover (that mallard green is gorgeous). Depending on the colour I choose, I'll grab a dbrand black leather skin for the back for space grey, or one of those matte clear skins from slickwraps if silver, primarily so it doesn't get scratched up by being set down on a hard surface etc.

Plus, I'd had a nasty experience with the magnets on a smart cover coming through the leather where it attaches to the side, damaging my almost new iPad Pro a few years back. Ever since, I've been adamant about using a skin of some kind if using a smart cover. Hasn't happened since.

My colour choice is silly really: I have a silver iPad 2 and a space grey iPad Air 1: the former feels solid and robust; the latter feels like delicate plastic. I’ve thus made associations with each colour: with no knowledge about how modern iPads are built, I just want solid and robust ?
