So I decided to throw caution to the wind and bought the iPad 9 64GB on first day. Works great, very fast compared to the old iPad Air 1 which will be retained as backup.

At first I thought I got a bad screen or maybe it needed “break-in time”as the colors were very warm in comparison to my other LED screens, white pages looked slightly yellow/brown, but it was just the effect of True Tone, so I turned that off and colors look very good now.

Set-up went OK with almost everything copied by Bluetooth from the old iPad. However the process seemed to be hung, or maybe was just taking too long to transfer media files by BT, so instead I restarted set-up by copying from the iCloud backup of the old iPad, and that worked fine.

Got it at BestBuy paying most of the price with BB gift cards received in previous purchase deals there 2 and 3 years ago.

Interesting that almost all the new threads here in the iPad forum are about the latest iPad mini, but certainly the new iPad 9 is an excellent product.

Yep. The 9th gen is a nice, affordable upgrade for older iPads.

Buying two for family to replace a Pro 9.7 (Verizon) and a 6th gen (Sprint). The embedded Apple SIM is disabled on the Verizon iPad while the 6th gen is limited to physical SIM only.

Due to carrier visibility restrictions, neither will allow signing up for the T-Mobile $10/5GB/5 month plan. Hence, apart from speed and camera improvements, the 9th gen also provides enhanced connectivity options.

Sat here on the new 9th gen - Loving it.

I’ve been meaning to upgrade for a while… years, but always struggled to justify it. I’ve been using an iPad Mini 2 since it’s launch nearly a decade ago (or a long time…), loved it but the battery is basically non existent now and losing app support etc so time to upgrade.

I timed my purchase to go with picking up the 13 Mini, downsized from an XR screen to a small iPhone Mini and picked up the iPad with larger screen instead of the iPad Mini. Hoping to use the phone just as a phone and camera, and switch to the iPad as my main device for work with the larger screen. Hoping I’ll get many years out of this, I found the A12 in the old XR to be incredible, I used to use lightroom mobile on it with RAW when travelling and couldn’t believe what I could do on a phone. Hoping the A13 in the iPad and larger screen will allow me to do the same.

And maybe I’m just becoming a little more frugal but I can’t justify the extra expense on the Mini - It’s beautiful that’s for sure but best part of £500 for 64gb? Not for me. Anyway, as long as people are happy with their purchase, great.

This is a fun thread. I agree that the iPad 9 deserves more discussion on this forum. I managed to withstand upgrading from my iPad 6 to the 8, but now the 9 is starting to look very tempting. 50% more RAM, double the storage and a SoC three generations newer.

Nearly every single improvement of which is on the 8th -- they changed literally almost nothing.

So - to your point - if you can get a great discount, the 8th is a steal.
The update from the the A12 to the A13 is worth it unless the deal on an 8th Gen iPad is at least a 15% or more cost difference. The addition of True Tone and the 12MP FaceTime camera are nice to haves, especially if you are a remote worker.

Unfortunately, no one should be buying the Air right now after the iPad mini 6 unveiling, but the wait for the updated Air is going to be a long one.

Honestly the iPad 9 sounds like it would be a good cheap replacement for an iPad Pro 10.5 since it would fit and use all of its accessories. This is a great value iPad. I wont get it but i do see great value for it

Cases, no. The iPad 9 is much thicker. Smart Keyboard, Apple Pencil, etc. yeah.

I'm curious as to what the 10th gen will bring to the table. They seem largely content with just internal updates on the base iPad, but I wonder if they will move to the 10.5" screen size and possibly laminated (inevitably causing round 3 of the white spot issue). They can keep the same case size and accessory support as the current, but with a larger screen. It's not a major upgrade but the design is there for it. It would be odd however to see them keep just the base iPad with the old pencil and accessories but no other iPads. Seems weird to keep 2 lines of products when the majority is using the newer.

Personally I'd rather have better speakers than a laminated display on the base iPad. Comparing the speakers of even the old Pros to the base iPad, it's not close at all. Most people don't notice or care about laminating the screen and this presents issues of its own.

I hope they don’t keep making it bigger.

We don’t need so many huge iPads

We recently upgraded one of my older relatives who was on an iPad Air and she almost didn’t keep the 8th gen, as it’s become a bit unwieldy for her. The speed was the main reason she even upgraded. Honestly if she could’ve had the previous 9.7” form factor with new internals she would’ve preferred that.

Honestly I would like something in the middle 9 inch range now

I ordered my iPad 9 today. My current iPad is the 3rd gen ‘retina’. So I am expecting a reasonable increase in performance :) Getting it Tuesday.

I thought about getting the new Mini, but I thought it might be too small, and to be honest, the £150 can go towards my iPhone fund for next year (rocking a 7+ here which isn’t quite ready for an upgrade. Just about!).

you’ll expect more then just a reasonable speed increase lol. That’s a massive jump in performance. Dual core A5x to a Hexacore A13, triple the Ram, faster storage.

enjoy the upgrade

Anyone noticed that on Apple Compare iPad website, iPad 5th Gen has second-gen TouchID but no mention of second-gen TouchID for 9th gen. Am I right in saying that 9th gen iPad has 1st gen TouchID or do they not mention second-gen anymore ?

also for display, 5th gen is ‘full sRGB standard’ but 9th gen is ‘sRGB’. Anyone know the differences between the two, which quality is better?

I can see iPad 10 keeping the same chip but increasing the screen to 10.5, but still non-laminated. Education buyers love that non-laminated screen and the cheap cost of replacing cracked non-laminated screens, as kids will be kids.

I’d also like to see iPad 10 ditch Lightning for USB-C but I am not sure if we’ll see that in a while. if Air 5 goes to 6GB RAM, then iPad 10 or iPad 11 might finally get a spec bump to 4GB RAM.

If the 10.5" screen were non-laminated, I'd be curious to see if this will eliminate the white spot issue of the old Pro and Air 3. If so, it may turn out to be a great replacement for those units. Many never notice the difference between laminated and non-laminated, even myself having used both the only real complaint I have with the non-laminated is the hollow sound.

My suspicion is that they will only move to USB-C when they give it the new design language with rounded corners, and I'd guess it'll be a few years still until that happens. I'm surprised they haven't moved to Pencil 2 support on the new iPad, they seem to segregate the old and new designs quite sharply in this way. More RAM would be nice for sure.

No, they wouldn’t include 2nd Gen Touch ID on the 5th Gen 1st in the 9th Gen. That makes no sense at all. It’s most likely because the 4th did not have Touch ID.
Not sure about the sRGB but again no reason that they went back in a time machine here.

Pencil 2 support also relies on the newer design language. You need the magnetized side for charging the Pencil.

Just received my iPad 9 and it's mind-blowing for the value. It's fast with the A13 chip, you get all the necessary features and the non-laminated screen gap is closer than previous models. The iPad 5th gen has a visible far gap and the screen feels cheap (plastic) but this is a great upgrade. It's a huge difference from iPad 5th gen quality-wise. Bonus: The home button sounds satisfying, soft, and quiet. The old one was tacky and clicky. Also, just an update for my previous posts; TouchID is second-gen and the display spec is the same on paper but looks better to the eye.

Edit: Speakers are better too, clearer and more bass. Touch ID is first gen but authentication speed is faster due to A13.

Thank you for the update. That's great news. Yes, IMO, the 9 is the best value for an iPad (even compared to the Pro and Air).

I was dead-set on ordering the Mini 6 but the whole jelly scrolling thing - along with the price/several people not satisfied with the display quality/needing to upgrade to Apple Pencil 2 - makes it not worth it cost-wise for me. I'm also one of those folks who prefer lightning as I find USB-C ports are more fragile in general, and all my other Apple stuff has lightning ports anyway.

So I caved and ordered the iPad 9. I was going to go silver but they cheaped out and the ports have the white "filling" like the 8th gen silver, not black, so it looks weird to me (I know, super minor, but meh). Went space grey 256 instead and very excited for it! Lead times suck but it is what it is.

Weight and/or unwieldiness are a bit of a concern coming from the Mini 5, but it's only a little heavier than the Air 4/Pro 11 which I didn't mind when trying out. Besides, I plan on putting a beautiful dbrand black leather skin on it with a smart cover (mallard green!) while at home and nothing else. My husband has a spare clear case from his iPad 7 he sold a while back, so that's perfect for travelling. Plus I get to keep using my perfectly functional and reliable Pencil 1 - no need to upgrade, personally. Having the headphone jack, more durable design and a nonlaminated display without the hideous purple tint my laminated Mini 5 has will be nice as well.

Primary use is for notetaking/casual stuff and entertainment/marking up documents as a writer/travel "notebook" and writing machine so it should perfectly suit these use cases. Will be awesome for video calls and reading thanks to the improved cam and true tone, and some comparison vids I've seen noted that the 9 has punchier colours/deeper blacks than the 8 oddly enough.

At $299 from Walmart the ipad 9 is a no brainer for my use case. I can take the difference between it and the air or mini in 2 years and almost buy another if it starts feeling too slow for my needs. Longevity doesn't matter when the price difference is enough to buy an upgrade to the thing that supposedly was going to last longer with the difference in $.

that for the 5th Gen iPad is a error, the second generation iPad Pro’s released after the 5th Gen iPad are the first iPads to have second Gen touchID

the touchID is confirmed to be first Gen for iPad 9 not second Gen, especially on your last post when you compared the two iPads on apples website it doesn’t mention for iPad 9 that it has second Gen touchID.

Also here

not that it makes a big deal because with its A13 and neural engine first Gen touchID is still super fast to unlock anyway

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, take good note of this post because THIS is how you do it.

I upgraded from this model to the A12 Mini 5 in 2019 and was amazed at the difference. You'll have an even greater one with the A13 and wonder how you tolerated it for so long.

Yes my bad, it does have 1st gen TouchID, it must be the A13 speed resulting in faster authentication. Looks like Apple is doing as much as they can to keep costs down and maximise on profit margins. Old design which came out in 2014, first gen TouchID, non laminated display, lightning port, no dual stereo speakers, 1st gen apple pencil. Its basically 2014 ipad air but with A13, better ram, support for pencil and keyboard.

The mini got the most attention from everyone, but the basic ipad is still the most popular one, like tim said.

Anyone getting the new 9th generation? Why as opposed to the other ipads in the lineup?

I had a 6th gen that I sold to buy a new one, but don't know which one.

The 6th 128GB cost me 399 euros when it came out. The new 9th 256GB cost 533 euros. That's a lot, not as cheap as before, and still same design.

Might go with the Air. The Pros seem much more than I need, but I want my new ipad to last me 5 years.
I was leaning getting the Mini 6 then went with the 9th gen iPad. Why? It's the best bang for your money. I was able to use my original iPad Air as a trade-in with Apple for $65. I have a suspicion that next years iPad Air which looks like these tablets minus the budget iPad are on a 2 yr cycle might get a bump in RAM from 4GB to 6GB. No facts just a hunch. My 6th Gen iPad with 2GB still handles heavy Ad laden websites like CBSSports.com fairly well. If the next Air gets a nice bump in specs I may trade-in my 6th gen iPad towards the next Air.
