I wish Apple released an “in-between” iPad x last year.
Just like they did with the iPhone X.

Just one iPad x with a 11.5-11.8 inch display from 849, and internal upgraded versions of the older 10.5 from 649 and 12.9 inch from 849.

And this year : drop the older 10.5 inch(make it an Air for 499, like they did) and drop the classic 12.9 inch and release a 10.2 inch (is already rumored) for 649 and 13 inch version of this iPad for 999.

Line-up for 2020

Current new iPad mini for $329
Updated regular 9.7 iPad with a12, laminated display, etc for $399
Current new 10.5 iPad Air for $499

iPad Pro 10.2 inch for $649
iPad Pro 11.8 inch for $849
iPad Pro 13.3 inch for $999

I would definitely have chosen the 11.8 inch.

11 inch is just a little too small for my liking, but the 12.9 is definitely too large for my liking to be portable.

I tried both the 11" and 12.9", and I used them extensively: the 12.9 won. I loved the big screen and the better multitasking experience. I don't find it too big to hold in one hand or to sit on a table at lunch (lots of people sporting large laptops these days, so I don't feel self conscious with a large iPad). The 12.9 sits more comfortably in my lap without me having to hold it (I had to hold the 11" in my hand much more when sitting on the couch: it's just the way I sit, I suppose). Ultimately, the bigger screen is more delightful than the 11" for me. YMMV

While this is a nice opinion piece, how is it related to the question the OP is asking?

I bought the 11" last fall. One of my uses is as a laptop replacement for shorter trips (2 weeks or less). I found the 11" just a bit too small, so last month I bought a 12.9" and love it when using it with the keyboard folio.

My 11" has become my couch surfing iPad (replacing an Air 2) -- mostly with the keyboard folded back but I do swing it out when responding a longer email. It is definitely overkill for what I now use it for (both are 1TB versions)

Nice choice on the 1TB models. I wish I owned both haha. Only the 11” so far.

I really want to do this too - but am coming up against a brick wall on selling it.

I tired on Ebay to sell my nearly new 11" pro with folio keyboard case - but Ebay wouldn't let me put a high enough reserve on it.

I don't trust a lot of 3rd party sales mechanisms as I have a friend who used gumtree and was given fake money and lost everything.

Any recommendations in the UK for selling an iPad?

Either trade in like 02 or sell to CEX.

Either trade in like 02 or sell to CEX.

I appreciate the heads up.. but already investigated that.

Trouble is with these places is the trade in is crazy low for a brand new device. they are quoting less than half the purchase price sadly.

i find both the 11 (which i returned) and the 12.9 about equal in handling (though obviously the 12.9 is bigger and heavier) which is to say, too unwieldy and especially too heavy

i will be buying a 12.9 and putting it on my tablet stand so handling is not an issue and i can get more real estate

i don’t travel with it and having it on a stand next to my reading chair works great for me

I sold my 2nd gen 12.9 so I could go smaller, and got the 11” pro. I absolutely love the device, but I still find I leave it on my desk and use my phone when I’m sitting on the couch. I thought I’d use it a lot more away from the desk because it’s smaller and lighter, but I just tend to reach for my phone.

I have toyed with selling the 11” and getting a 12.9 again for the desk (my iPP is my main/only computing device), then picking up a mini for my portable device. I have to remind myself that the 11” was purchased to be both my desktop device AND my portable device and I really don’t need two separate devices, but I don’t always listen to my own advice, so who knows where I’ll wind up. ;-p

I love my 12.9 3rd gen, but it’s hard to take places and I do like to take my iPad everywhere. I still have my iPad Pro 10.5, so that tends to be the one that I take places. I got an iPad mini 5 just 2 days ago and I find it too small now and prefer to use my 10.5 so I’ll be returning it. Lately, I’ve been thinking that my 10.5 is the best size and that I should have upgraded it to the 11” instead of upgrading my 12.9 2nd gen to the 3rd gen. It could be a case of grass is always greener on the other side. I do love the 12.9 when I sit down and use it, but it would be nice to consolidate my devices into one. I now think that the 11” might have been best for that. I think that I’ll just stick with my iPP 10.5 until iPP 11” gen 2 though and it gives me more time to think about which size I prefer because honestly, I could go either way still.

I have the 11" and am debating changing or getting a 12.9 on top almost every day. The thing is, I also have a mbp 13", but rarely use it. Most of the time I'm absolutely fine with the 11" as my on the go device. I'm actually considering selling the macbook (also have a mac pro at home) and replacing it entirely with a 12.9"... but then there are the stupid limitations of ios. I'm really hoping that ios13 will resolve some of them like the limitations in Safari (can't use facebook ad manager for example).
If I look at my current dock on the macbook, soon the only app that will be missing on the ipad is Adobe Premiere. Everything else I do on this macbook is also available on ipad in almost equal ways.
It feels weird though to own two ipads with keyboard cases at the same time... AHHHHHH what to do??! :D

I'm considering selling the macbook now, waiting till WWDC what they'll announce, either new macbook pros, or the novelties inside of ios 13 will be so big that I'll consider buying ipad Pro 12.9" 4th gen this autumn and surviving till then with the 11".

I’m right there with ya - pros and cons to each one for sure. I was thinking the mini might work for me only because, like i said, I am using my phone when sitting around, and the mini would certainly be bigger than that. It would also be really nice for reading in bed I think since it’s got a decent size screen, but still lightweight. But IDK - I always think I’m gonna read a lot more than I wind up actually reading. I need to just listen to books and podcasts instead. ;-p

Yes, if you are using your iPhone when sitting around then I can see why an iPad mini might suit you. Also, if you plan on using it to read then that’s also a great use case. I have a Kindle Oasis 2, so couldn’t justify calling it my eBook reader. If I didn’t have that though, I’d certainly have had more reason to keep it. I know what you mean about intending to read more too, I’m the same. I tend to read forums and tech news much more than novels.
At work, I listen to podcasts on my iPhone. I use iCatcher so as I can turn the screen off or exit the app and still have the audio play, even for video podcasts. My iPhone is my phone, camera, music player, gaming device, etc. It gets a lot of use, but when I’m at home on the couch, I reach for my iPads. I use both my iPhone and my iPads in bed, just depends on what I want to do at the time. I tend to use certain apps on each.

If you keep the 11”, I’d keep the mbp (or vice versa). That combination covers more ground than two iPads, for when you do need more functionality. I’d get the 12.9 if you want to combine functionality and replace both the 11” and the mbp.
I’m doubtful iOS 13 will address most of the complaints about iOS, but we’ll see.

I’d like to read about the rumor your mentioned concerning a 10.2 one. I sold my mini 2. Then bought the new mini 5. I would have kept it I think if I had an easy way to store the pencil. Then returned it after a few days and got the iPad Pro 11. Think I will stick with this. Though it is still slightly large and heavy for my use. I would LOVE something a tad bit smaller. I would even like an iPad Pro mini. I had a mini in a Zagg keyboard case and it suited me just fine (I’m Mugsey Bouges size).

I use it to teach while moving around a room. I can see my manuscript on one side of the screen, keynote on the other side with current slide and next slide, and the pencil a magnetic attachment point away for underlining or circling things on the screen so they appear on the projector. A 9 point something inch iPad Pro would be so nice.

The 11” pro really isn’t much bigger at all than the 9.7 iPad. Of course, I guess if you had the small bezels a 9.7 iPP would be a bit smaller than the 9.7 ipad.

I just upgraded from the 10.5” iPad Pro to the 2018 12.9” iPad Pro. My reasoning was that I’m 6’3” and the 12.9 feels more like a tablet to me. Also, when I would take my 10.5 to class, I always found myself wishing I got the 12.9 when I would take notes with my Apple Pencil. Also, the 12.9 feels more like a laptop replacement than any other sized iPad.

Well, heck, I just did it. I should of gotten this from the start, but I got the 11 in December and just grabbed the 12.9 for $850 from Best Buy. Very happy with the larger size. I don’t find it cumbersome at all. It fits in my bag, it’s great for using in bed and on the couch. Love the larger screen, it’s gorgeous.

... now, I guess I need to sell my 11 inch plus Apple Smart Keyboard. That’s my next task. I sold my 10.5 pro for $250 in credit at Best Buy and selling the 11 will over the remaining balance on my card for the 12.9.

Ahh Jesus I‘m in the same boat- I bought the 11“ last autumn and just sold my 2016 MacBook Pro last week for exactly the price of the 12.9“ with keyboard. I was contemplated it for a few days and today couldn‘t resist to get it as well. The thing is, I wasn’t missing the larger screen when I still owned the MacBook, but now the 11“ feels kinda cramped, especially since right now I‘m working a lot at an office workstation and not at home like usual, so I need the iPad as my personal computer on the desk next to me all the time... and at a desk distance, the 11“ is really displaying typo a bit too small. Carrying it around or at the café it‘s absolutely perfect, but for this office use case arghh. I have 4 week return right, so I wanna try the 12.9“ out a bit but am paranoid of damaging it.

Also I really can‘t justify owning both I think, so eventually would have to sell the 11“, which would be sad for traveling. I‘m so torn. The large screen and the better multitasking app view is amazing, but but it‘s heavy and big, and also when putting it in the second upright position where the screen is more at a 90° angle, the keyboard protrudes even more annoyingly than usual...

I sold my 2nd gen 12.9” pro and got the 11” pro. Just because it was a little cheaper and I thought it could be a little more portable. Used it for 12 days or so and decided it was a great device but I missed the extra size for multitasking, videos, and gaming. Took it back within the exchange window and got the 12.9”. Definitely don’t regret it. This is the perfect device for me. I’m a big guy so I can use it in any circumstance I need. Desk, lap, laying in bed, walking around the house. Size and weight are no issue for me. This screen is GORGEOUS.

I would sell your MBP13 and buy a iPad Pro 12.9” and then you would own both 11 and 12.9. Also I don’t see a 4th gen iPad Pro coming in Autumn. If it did, Then the 2018 iPad Pro, would be the shortest lived iPad Pro in history.

If so, what was your experience and reasoning? considering doing this, to gain more screen real estate basically. Love the 11, don't get me wrong, but something about that 12.9" pro is tempting.... Didn't think it would be a big decision, but has turned out to be.... any advise much appreciated!

I did the opposite. Went from 12.9” to 11”. I use mainly for media consumption so was a bit easier to watch in bed and stuff... but every time I see it in the apple store I can’t stop but look at it . I definitely liked split screen on it more... but the keyboard also sort of bugged me as well in landscape because it was harder for me to type.

The 12.9 though definitely didn’t feel “to big” I was able to hold with one hand and stuff. Just liked the portability a bit more

I did it on Saturday. Now I have both of them. Am contemplating to keep only one because of REASONS, but it feels like both of them have their use cases.. argh! :D

I bought an 11 and loved it but also just picked up a 12.9. Like many others I found that after certain amount of time holding it in left hand and swiping with right while watching TV in the recliner my left arm starts to fatigue. Since that’s the one that I had rotator cuff surgery on, don’t want to mess with that. The smart thing for me is to keep the 11 but I am going to compare side by side this weekend using news+.
If there is not too much difference displaying my favorite magazines, will keep the 11. I like the 12.9 keyboard and some websites obviously show more content, but there are also some websites that look better on the 11.

I know there's not a set schedule and that you can't guess with Apple, but didn't the second pro come out in Fall of 2017?
