Even if I used Skype, it's kinda pointless if family members I need to contact don't want to use it. I know my parents. I gave them Android before and they ended up not using it and giving it back to me because it confused them. To be honest, I didn't want to give them iPhones because I didn't want the family to be locked into Apple's ecosystem. Alas, I was getting tired of transferring their contacts in batches via SIM card from dumbphone to dumbphone so I eventually caved and gave them iPhones. It's been fairly smooth sailing since and features like iMessage makes it easier for us to actually contact each other. It sounds that you live rounded by ios-members, so there is no need to change that. ios/osx isnt popular here in Europe, so I prefer apps working cross-OS, like skype does. So this is the point, if you can live with it, you dont need o change it. But when you said that you are forced to use iphone because your family member uses ipad, I gave you a hint using skype instead of facetime. But if you dont like skype or any other than Facetime/iMessage/iWhatever then you dont have much other choices than use iphone.
So far, I'm liking Hangouts. Alas, very few people I know actually use it. We rarely use FaceTime for video calls but FaceTime audio has pretty much replaced most of our cellphone calls. We're more likely to have the iPad on-hand while the iPhone is frequently left on silent/vibrate, unattended and charging in another room or something. One reason I'm really excited about Continuity. On iOS 8, I'll be able to get even regular calls and SMS on the iPad.Facetime is rather limited in that it only works on iOS devices. I use Google Hangouts as I am able to use it to make video calls to more people. iOS devices does not have a large enough reach for me.
