Maybe the design team learned through studies that a large majority of people use a case so they can get away with things like a camera hump. That and Steve Jobs would've never let current designs stand. If all phones were built like a droid turbo 2, maybe that would change.

As long as phones are made of glass, I’ll use one and therefore a camera hump doesn't matter.

But who decided phones have to be fragile glass sandwiches? Phones were plastic back and just fine for a decade or more before.

Its like the question of who keeps asking for thinner phones? I never had a problem with 9-9.3mm in the old iphone 4 series vs 8.1 now. And think how much more battery can fit in that ~1mm too. Plastic back would really counteract that weight too.

Oh the same people who then sell the repairs at astronomical costs or sell the insurance. A display doesnt cost them $329 for the Pro Max, the Bill of Material shows it is $67; EVEN WITH labor it shouldnt be over $125 MAXIMUM direct from Apple stores.

Or asinine $599 for the back glass- again because they chose to permanently seal the back glass on and make the camera bump so it cant just come off clean. The glass is probably a few dollars top. Design choices. Which FYI other manufacturers make the back glass removable (with effort/skill, but removable nevertheless)

Cmon man....This is meant to pad their pockets intentionally making phones fragile glass sandwiches. They make tens of millions in repairs per year.

Wireless charging works just fine through plastic. And there are some really nice feeling plastic hybrid built devices out right now

I would personally have zero problems with a phone with a back like some of the Samsungs' "glasstic" type back. And I have NEVER shatters any glass on a phone in over a decade of owning smartphones. But why do we need glass and who decided that except the companies selling the phones AND the repairs?

I agree, hardware wise viewing a phone as a tool, my droid turbo 2 was probably my favorite phone ever made. Software side was abysmal. If they built an edge to edge iPhone with the materials out of a Motorola Turbo 2 (kevlar back, multilayered polymer screen, somewhat easily repaired all around) I’d be highly interested.

That being said Apple often goes for aesthetics over purely material function and I along with most people don’t mind when we are talking about a device that has to be looked at often. The glass all around is beautiful design. Even if a naked iPhone from 6 until now is like a wet bar of soap to hold.

What I’d love to see, will never happen, is the phone companies partner with some firearm companies and look into some quality glass filled nylon style polymers. Companies like Glock and Ruger make some of the most durable polymers in the world.

Sorry to hijack thread. Personally I will stick with iPhone as long as they stick with their current internal hardware software integration and privacy focus. I wouldn’t mind however if competition forced them to use more durable, easily repairable while still beautiful external components.

Final note I also like having a case on my phone anyways because I like to put my Id on something I can track down from anywhere.

Iphone 13 max will likely be my next iPhone portless and all 😉

I normally upgrade every year, but this year for the 1st time I purchased Apple care + with my iPhone 11 Pro Max, so want to get my money’s worth with that. Once that has expired in 2021 I will then upgrade.

If all the members who purchase a 12, could refrain from posting too many pics that would be great.....

This will be the first year I’ve not upgraded since the 7.

The 11 pro swung it over the XS with the improved cameras and mainly the much improved battery life. I just can’t see the 12 justifying the expenditure if the main selling point is 120hz.

I have an iPad Pro and while the 120hz is nice I have never once switched from my iPad to phone and thought “wow this feels choppy”. Perhaps the impact of 120hz isn’t so noticeable on a smaller display size ?

120 rate on a small device like an iPhone is nothing more than a tech spec. And a lot of people will, or already have convinced themselves, that they can’t have a phone without it. Many convince themselves they can tell a difference with not having it. 120 rate is a good marketing tool that will help to sell a lot of new phones.

I generally upgrade my phone every 4-6 years depending on health of said phone. I got XR with 128GB for storage one year ago, and pretty happy with it. 87% battery health.

It’s the iPads line I want to upgrade/buy though.

I am debating on upgrading from my 8 plus. to the 11 pro max or waiting for the 12. I am nervous that the phones may be rushed and have build issues with some hardware. Not that it doesn't happen often. Just wondering if in these times the quality control will be the same. I am sure I am wrong, but it just sits in the back of my head. Also adopt to first generation 5g which could be buggy? At this point it might make sense to wait but just lingering things in my head

I feel like the iPhone 12 series will be less ergonomic because of the squared edges. I wanna buy a new iPhone and I'm 50/50 on getting an 11 or a 12 max. I'll just wait till the announcement and make a decision.

I have a xs max 256gb that I bought on launch day. Do not see a reason to upgrade. Its still very fast. Does everything I want it to... Has a big oled screen, decent cameras, looks current. Would like a better battery life but it's manageable. Capacity is still at 89%.

And with ios14, it'll be as good as a new device. Will probably go for one of the 2021 iphones.

Mine, SE 2016 iOS14 beta 6 battery health 89% as back up phone.
iPhone 7 as daily driver.

No reason to upgrade.

I already upgraded to the iPhone SE2 from a 4-yr old iPhone 7 (thank you Walmart).

I’ll likely get the 5.4” iPhone 12 to test how I fare with OLED. Whether that gives me migraine/eye strain or not will determine if I switch back to the SE2.

I likely won't upgrade but I will wait till the Apple Holiday Return starts then I'll buy I then and send it back on Jan. 8 2021 depending on if I like it or not. I'm not a fan of 5G yet.

I don't upgrade phones every year especially if they are too similar to the previous versions. I am still keeping the iphone X from 2017 till today due to it. I didn't see any reason to upgrade to the Xs and 11 pro series. If iphone 12 series is a big leap, then I might do it. I will wait and see.

I've had androids for about 6 years now, needing a new phone very soon. In your experience, does the previous iPhone generation come down in price after the new one is announced? Hoping I can find a way to get an iPhone 11 Pro for a deal.

Depends where you are. If you’re in the US, the 11 Pro will likely be discontinued by Apple and there are no guarantees on deals and availability of brand new devices from authorized sellers. Unlike Android, sales on brand new iPhones (even older models) aren’t all that constant. A lot of deals are tied to service (whether postpaid or prepaid).

There should be a good supply of used devices but iPhones typically carry higher resale value compared to Android as well.

There’s also Apple certified refurbs. Only saves you $100-200 versus release MSRP but I’d trust their condition better than used or 3rd party refurb.

I was considering upgrading to an iPhone 11 if I could find a good deal after the 12's release (I don't need the newest model and I'd rather be frugal) but I just watched a video comparing the 7+ and the 11. The 11 seemed to be, at its best, only a couple of seconds faster than the 7+. So I'll hang onto my old phone for a while longer. It still works perfectly - the battery is the only part showing its age.

I've recently come into some money and it would be smart to purchase a new MBP, iPhone, and iPad now. The problem is that there is nothing wrong with any of them beyond short battery life, but they're too old and beat up to be worth selling, so replacing them feels extremely wasteful.

Lol, you do know that you can transfer your current Apple care to your new iPhone 12. Just a thought haha 😆

Never say never but i'm currently using my 11 Pro Max from last year, from what i have read (rumours) the 12 doesn't seem all that compelling at the moment. Altho now that i have said that, when they show off the new design along with some feature that i think sounds good, i will end up changing my mind

I usually wait until phones are released and hands on features are discussed. For example, last year I did not plan to upgrade my X yet I did eventually thanks to the draw of improved battery life which impacted me at work. So once a good upgrade deal came, I went for it.

This years upgrades don’t excite me, and for me the next big thing will be no notch/all screen which is rumoured to come in 2022 to 2023.

120hz will be nice but it doesn’t significantly change my phone use and is not going to be worth the ~700$ upgrade difference. And that’s only if they implement it, and implement it well - I have doubts in the quality of 120hz with a 60-96hz IC driver as purportedly sourced by Ross Young.

5G is useless for me as I’m not on a 5G plan and not planning to move to one until at least late 2021. I know carriers in Canada can’t wait at the business “opportunity” to justify even higher monthly bills

So no point in upgrading. That said, the discussion always changes once phones are revealed.

Otherwise the 11 Pro is a perfect device for me/my use

I’m not planning on upgrading actually planning on downgrading. Since I am home most of the time now I’ve realize my iPhone 12 Pro is very much overkill. I’m hoping that they don’t strip too many features from the 12 this year compared to the pro because the smaller form factor seems perfect to me.

There hasn't been a good reason to update a working phone since the iPhone 8 came out.

I still recommend the iPhone 8 to anyone looking to make an affordable purchase. Apple typically has really strong hardware quality, but that phone literally had no quality reports of any issues whatsoever, it took about four generations of phones to reach that point, but totally a practical phone that performs excellent with iOS 13.
