I've got one. It runs great on my Mac Mini. I've also got a 2001FP on my PC.

The 2005FPW is now $334 after coupons! Woah! Too bad I don't have desk space for another... :(

Those coupons are already expired ... have to act quickly with those slick deals, eh? ;)

Rotating to portrait?

One question though, using Tiger and the Mac Mini, how are you guys flipping it into Portrait mode. Surely just physically turning the screen doesnt alter it??[/QUOTE]

I am at a total loss of figuring out how to get the 2005FPW to work in portrait mode on my G4 with Jaguar. Do I need to download a particular driver? This is driving me crazy!

I just ordered one for my mac mini and would like to know what others think of it. Many say it has the same screen as Apple's 20".

Either way it seems to be a popular choice among Mac users and I would like some feedback on what to expect.

Thanks

I have been running a mac mini and EyeTV system linked up to a 2005FPW for a few months now and are very happy with the results. Fantastic value for money. Runs at full resolution no problems.

My 2005FPW was never in production. I ordered it on a sunday night and got it on tuesday at noon. all for $3 shipping.

I'm guessing they had to make me one since they were on sale and selling lots so therefore out of stock.

I'd also thought of getting a Dell LCD for my Mac Mini, but I just can't pull the trigger to have a Dell sitting with my Mac. So the mini is just paired with a 17" ACD LCD until I can afford the 20" Aluminum LCD.

Yes, composite from VCR/DVD players works great. I have my GameCube hooked to my combo VCR/DVD player and that into the composite channel of the Dell ... works great. :) .. just make sure you route your audio as well. ;)

I felt the same way for a long, long time, until I realized deals were deals and that bang for buck was more satisfying then getting ripped off with an overpriced LCD.

I have nearly $400 in Apple Store credit; could've paid half price for the 20" LCD, but instead, spent only $330 on the Dell 20" WS and left the credit intact. This Dell will do fine for video editing and such and 6 months down the road, an Apple 23" will probably be in the $800 range, at which point I'll maximize that credit even more.

So I could use this as my tv as well then? I am basically trying to use this with my 12" p.b. 1.5. as a tv and an external screen. if this isnt possible, whats the best way for me to achieve my goal.

Yes ... when connected to a VCR with coax antennae. :)

has anyone had any trouble with the Dell 2005FPW in portrait mode with a 512 MB mac mini? It seems quite slow in comparison to landscape view. I'm wondering if it could a RAM problem, and if upgrading to 1GB would solve the problem, or if it's the graphics card (and therefore there's nothing to be done about it).

It's most likely your video card. :(

I know that in portrait mode graphics acceleration is turned off or something.

check this thread.

I cannot say if going to 1GB will help as I do not have my screen yet. I upgraded my mini from 512 to 1gb about 2 months ago and it made a big difference. even if it doesn't help in portrait mode it will with everything else.

1GB+ is where OSX really comes alive..

I have a question for people that currently have a 2005fpw. does the picture in picture work with the dvi as the main screen and another system on the vga cable in the small window?

this would be great for me as I would monitor my torrent machine. the torrent machine shares my 19" crt with my media center (sawtooth G4 1ghz) on a kvm switch. I hate switching systems when watching video :(

Yep, Picture in Picture will work with any combination of inputs.

EDIT: Actually, it only acts like it works with all inputs. Once I plug anything into the VGA, it disables DVI/VGA PiP.

let me sum up what most people will say:

it's an incredible lcd. on the technical level, it is superior to the apple LCDs in many ways. it is a dell, though, and had a dell look to it. you made a solid choice.

FYI, both the apple and the dell 20" LCDs use the same LG panel. Dell over-states the response time on the LCD(12 ms). whereas Apple/LG report it as 16 ms. Anandtech has reported this.

Been using the 2005 Dell screen with my Mac mini for about 7 months now, was way under half the price of the Apple 20 inch. It has so many more things it can do than Apples Displays, the VGA is hooked into a PowerBook. If you do not like the Dell logo staring at you than a Black Felt Marker makes it almost go away, they should put the marker in the box.

I've been using the 2005FPW with my powerbook for several months now, and it works as an amazing second monitor, same dpi as the powerbook so the transition is seamless (only with the older powerbooks, newer powerbooks have higher dpi) Oh, and the powerbook lid handily covers the dell logo, but I don't really mind Dell.

I received it 2 days before the scheduled date, which was quite amazing in my book. Kudos to Dell for shipping it quickly. It was only "in production" for me for several hours.

I don't know what to say about portrait mode besides NVIDIA getting their butts into gear and making a rotation driver for macs =/ It would have come in handy many many times now.

As for the multiple inputs, it works wonders as I have my PC connected via VGA, and I'm looking for HDTV solutions to connect via component, so I can watch TV as well. Such a big plus over the ACDs.

I hope I get mine before the said date. dell says the 9th so maybe I will get it on the 7th or 8th. mine went into production right at the end of last week so I guess that held it up a bit.
