To put things into context, my 14” M1 Max (32GPU) is faster, quieter (the fans rarely turn on) and lasts longer than my 2019 13” Quad Core I7 that it replaced….by a long shot. I am very happy but it does look like the 24core GPU version would be the sweet spot in the 14” max

How does a 14" M1 Max 24-gpu-core compare to a 2015 MBP 15" 2.2Ghz i7 regarding fans noise and heat?

(the noise on the 2015 ruins my audio recordings)

That was exactly my upgrade path. I don't have a silent room, but I haven't noticed the fans on the 14", even when they are definitely on. It was hard not to notice the fans on the 2015 15". Same with heat, I could probably do hours of photo editing (which is the most intensive thing I've done with it so far) on my lap and not be uncomfortably hot. Not sure about other use cases, and of course nothing scientific here, but I am very pleased in these regards.
