I have a friend whose family is in the business of producing corrugated board (aka cardboard boxes). Maybe I should tell them to contact apple.

the courier has taken the package directly from your home? what was on the sheet? thanks for all these information! :D

No, they didn't pick it up at my house. I took it to a FedEx store. The instructions weren't anything special, infact I didn't even read them.

no one ever read the instruction sheet
i'll post my experience in Italy when apple send me the magic box though.

I just talked to Apple about the delay. today about 3:00pm eastern
Boxes are back ordered and will be four weeks before they get more.
I asked about how some people were able to take to the post office in other countries who would then box up for them.
She said yes I could do that! I'm in the US.

She cancelled all my repair ID's (5), gave me new ones and said to take to UPS store and give them the numbers and they would give me boxes and ship. Apple pays for shipping. :)

I asked if they were repairing the old ones she said yes, I would not get back the one's I am sending but ones that they can repair.

Still 4 to 6 weeks turn around once recieved.

ALSO: If they run out of 1st gen they will replace with another model with similar options as what is returned.

Just FYI.
Again she said I should take to UPS since it will be a while before they get boxes.
She stressed "a while".

as for current condition of returned ipods it did not seem to matter as to the condition.

I received a standard white padded envelope and a pre-addressed postage bag today from Apple to send my iPod back in.

So either they never have been sending out boxes over here in the UK or have resorted to plan b.

I finally mailed the prepaid FedEx box. Now the wait. I'll probably end up selling the nano if it's worth anything. Maybe.

I recieved the packaging last tuesday. A big envelope, packaging instructions, UPS bag and label. I'm from Denmark, guess they have different procedures for the return depending on the location.

My status has been "product replacement pending" since last friday.

Received one box

I put in my requests the first day. Believe it or not I still had two functioning units. Received one box with the foam and sent it back a few days later -- order "pending". Have not received the second box. I really like the 1st Gen ipod because it fits into a bike speaker system and a desktop speaker system I bought back in the day and they both still work perfectly. I also find it most comfortable to hold when running. I'm not sending my second one in until I'm sure they are not replacing it with a newer model. I'd rather take my chances with the old one bursting into flames!

Please post what replacement model you get so I can decide. THANKS!

I'm debating about replacing the battery myself. I have a pristine condition black nano, the replacement battery and tools are only about $5 on eBay, and the replacement instructions on youtube look VERY easy.

Not sure what there is to gain by sending my Nano to Apple. Seems like more trouble than it's worth for such a simple repair. If I do muck up the battery replacement I could still return the Nano when my box eventually arrives.

6 weeks

From Norway and received the same type of UPS pack as Sace. But note that the original message from Apple is vague on what is to be replaced- whole unit or just faulty battery; and it clearly states that I should expect to wait 6 weeks for replacement after shipping my unit.
Not really sure it's worth wait - I use the thing every day.

posted my ipod back well over a week ago and the status online still says "empty box shipped"

slightly worried I have lost my ipod and now i can't find my proof of postage so its a double screw up

balls!

I 'registered' first day and got my box the next week. Don't really know why I care, haven't used my nano in years. The battery life was awful, lasted about an hour.
Maybe it'll get more use after they replace the battery.

I registered mine first day and still haven't received a box, and I live in the bay area.
I'm now considering just keeping the thing for a souvenir.
My nano was one of the very first one to be released. Our company gave them to us almost 2 weeks before they went on sale to the public. It's engraved and I know I'll never get this back. Plus, it still works. Not sure about battery life, I just leave it plugged into the ipod adapter in my car.

I filed the 1st morning the news was released on MacRumors to get my wife's nano replaced, then about 10 days later I found my nano in one of my drawers and submitted a ticket on it.
Two days later a box arrives, but it was for my nano, not the wife's that I had submitted 10 days earlier.
Now Dec. 10, 2 days short of a month and still no box for her's.

I submitted a request a few days after the program started, and I still haven't received a box. The second request I sent (for a separate nano) just arrived today.

One month later and still no box. Has anyone from Australia received their box yet?

Today apple has updated the status of my repair: "Product replacement pending" :D
i want my ipod back ASAP :D

finally got my box and sent it in a couple of weeks ago. Forgot to update the thread.
