anyone switch from galaxy s4 to iphone 6?

It what ways might this matter? Would I even notice I was not using the latest version of something? Or does it causes problems of some kind?

The S4, a flagship for 2013, is not getting the new and improved TW UI while the S5, a flagship for 2014 has the new version.

Now some people may not notice or care if the have the latest TW, but wouldn't you want the same software on your S4 knowing that there is latest out there and your phone, that came out in 2013, wont have it? Better question to ask here is why isn't the S4 getting the latest software from samsung? It is pattern with Samsung, while they have gotten better, with having a ****** support for their older hardware.

And yes i know, even the s3 was updated.

These are the two phones I'm intrigued by at the moment. I'm curious to hear from anyone who's used both what the pros and cons are, everything from performance, feel, battery life to whatever else.

I am not quite sure why you are comparing the iPhone 6 with an S4, which is 1.5 years older and valued at less than 50% currently. You can easily find used S4's under $300 at excellent conditions. If you can't decide between the two, meaning they are equally good to you, then isn't it a no brainer to get the MUCH cheaper one?

The S4 is a good phone, and millions of people use it world-wide. It may not be perfect, but certainly is more than fine.

. Too many glitches, apps were horrible.

What kind of glitches? Give me some scare stories, please:(

I understand the psychological desire to have the latest and greatest, but I'm wondering what the practical effect of not having it might be.

Because these are the two phones I'm interested in.

Ah, but they aren't equally "good" to me. They are equally appealing to me. Since I haven't used either I have no idea how good I might find them to be. (Also, for what it's worth, I am with Verizon and have an upgrade, so the price difference will be 199$ for iphone 6 versus O or under 50 bucks for the s4. A meaningful difference, but not a huge one).

If I knew my satisfaction level would be the exact same with either phone, then yes, getting the cheaper one is the obvious choice. But that's an unknown, and thus why I'm gathering information about each them to help me choose.

At times I couldn't access the internet on my phone, it would say mobile data was off when it was on. Text messages wouldn't send, When I first got the phone it wouldn't make calls. It got really slow in the 6 months that i had it.... Things like that. Oh yea and there was a blue dot in my camera that wouldn't got away lol. IT was so annoying.

Fair enough. Frankly, I am not sure if this is the best place (MacRumors forum) to get a balanced view of the two devices. Naturally, this site will be dominated by users switching away from an S4 to an iPhone. So you are likely to hear from those experienced S4 issues.

As I said, the S4 has a huge user-base, and it is a great phone. I never had problems with mine, and I am sure you will get the same answer if you go ask the S4 users there from an Android forum. You will very likely be just as happy getting an S4.

On the other hand, the iPhone 6 is also a great phone, and you would also enjoy it like millions of other iPhone users. If I were in your situation, I would get the iPhone 6 because your out-of-pocket price difference is smaller than the difference in actual street values. In addition, if you do change you mind, it would be much easier to resell the iPhone than the S4 in the next little while, for the reason of supply vs. demand.

Not glitchy or trouble prone? How was the battery life?

Nope. Mine was flawless in the two years I owned it. Software updates ironed out about of the lag people bitched about at first and I reckon if I hadn't got the urge to update to a phablet then it would have kept me going for another year or so easy.

Battery was alright, if would get me through a casual day, though I would carry a second battery or my charger if I had an occasional 16 hour day.

Thanks for your thoughts. You make some good points, though I doubt I'd ever sell a phone.

I guess my fear of the Galaxy is the future: I'm pretty confident the iphone 6 wil be working fine and seem plenty up to date 18 months from now. But will the galaxy s4 be performing well and seem current enough 18 months from now?

I had a S4..I will miss the awesome camera..the thing took excellent videos! the ability to add emulators..but other than that I'M GOOD! I'm invested in the Apple ecosystem especially now that I have the iphone6..I wished the 6 was a solid 5" screen, but I can live with 4.7

Why does everything about android vs. iphone have to be an argument. I was in this same position and ultimately determined that the 5s was way better than the S4. So I think it is patently obvious that the 6 is better than the s4.

As a FYI my smartphone history has been nokia 3650>Nokia n82>Nokia N95 8gb>Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100>nexus 5>iPhone 5s

I am not biased in any way but if you are looking for the best smartphone now and the smartphone most similar to nokia quality and reliability the iphone is the new standard.

I would never buy another Samsung if I were to go back to android as a main device OS I would get a HTC, Huawei or LG. I currently have a huawei y330 alongside my iphone and huawei'a quality is frankly better than Samsung. My point is I would not even get the s4 I would look at the one plus one, htc one e8 or something similar.

To be honest, it won't. The s3 I had was considered old and out of date this year. It no longer gets updates. I can tell by next year the S4 will be obsolete also or at least close to it.

Can you tell more about your experiences with Samsung, and why you chose 5s over s4, and why you're convinced iphone 6 is better than it by far?

Yeah, they don't get updated like iPhones do. Usually after 2 years they're obsolete. Also, all updates don't get released at the same time for android devices unless you have the GP (Google Play) edition phones.

I'd rather have 5" screen too, but since I'm currently using iphone 4, I'm thinking 4.7 will be fine for me.

I care nothing about the camera, for what's its worth. And care nothing about taking videos or watching videos. I'm much more about texting, readability, emailing, basic and fast web information look-up, and so on.

Forgive my ignorance, but why are updates needed at all? If a phone works well enough at the start, why must anything be changed?

I miss widgets

Those weather things? Yeah, they are nice.

Just when I think I'll go with iphone, I'll think of something like the following….

On iphone, there is a shortcut menu. If you want to reach the alarm clock, you slide up the short cut menu. All good, right?

Except when you click on the clock icon, it won't take you straight to the alarm clock. It will take you to the timer first. Every single time. Doesn't matter if, like most people, you rarely use the timer. Or if you use the alarm clock every day. It will take you to the timer first no matter what.

Then, to make matters worse, when you do press the clock icon and see your alarm setting, you must first press 'edit' before you press the time itself to to adjust the time. Why must you press 'edit' first? Oh, no particular reason. You just have to. Every single day.

So the process of setting the alarm takes at least two more steps than on an android. A small thing to some, a maddening annoyance to me due to the sheer stupidity and inefficiency of it. It's bad enough that you can't choose which is the default action for that shortcut, but why make the default something like timer instead of the far more important alarm clock??

it's much easier to set alarms through Siri.

I don't have that broad on my phone, so don't know. But even so, it does not excuse those insane design choices.

More like user error.
The shortcut was designed to bring up a timer not the alarm, which I find very useful.

User error? How so?

And are you suggesting that more people use the friggin' TIMER than use the alarm clock??

If the shortcut is "designed" to be a shortcut to the rarely used timer instead of the frequently used alarm clock, it's a moronic design choice. Of the three options available under that particular shortcut, the alarm clock is clearly the far more important and frequently used phone feature than the timer and stopwatch.

In fact, of the 9 total choices offered when you pull up that shortcut, the alarm clock may be the most important and frequently used feature of any of them for the vast majority of users. Many of us use our alarm everday. Airplane mode? Not so much. Bluetooth? Never. And some, like portrait mode lock, shouldn't be there at all when something far more useful could be there instead.

I have no problem with people praising what the iphone does right. But I sure do have a problem with people defending the indefensible just because Apple designed it that way.

What will you argue for next? How great it is that you must press 'edit' before adjusting the alarm clock time every day?

Meanwhile, I just read through description of Yosemite for the first time. I'm using a Mac Air with OS X 10.8.5, and upgrade prompts appear now and then.

Yosemite alone might be better than what I have now just in terms of Mac use, but it also pushed me in the direction of iphone 6. The two together seems pretty appealing, and would allow me to text from my Mac and all that.

It's kind of an overrated feature tbh. Occasionally it's a novelty, but it can be annoying getting a string of messages and both your phone and laptop going off at the same time. Also it doesn't exactly work perfectly. Earlier this evening I got a few messages which I viewed but didn't reply too. As soon as I get to my MacBook desktop I get the same notifications again.

Wow, really? Can you turn off the notifications on the Mac but still use it, or is that too much to ask of Apple?

Not working perfectly scares me, and what I expect from Android not iphone.

Any practical and meaningful benefits to using Yosemite and iphone 6, or mostly just hype?
