All iPads Anyone thinking about Eliminating iPad?

Aside from the crazy high prices of the new iPad Pros today, I'm starting to think with MacBook Pros getting better displays, being even lighter, and of course, still more powerful (especially with the VEGA graphics), I'm finding that I can probably squeeze the iPad out of my workflow.

I'm currently on a 2013 macbook pro 15" and I'm looking to maybe upgrade when Cannonlake comes out, and it got me thinking, I almost never bother with my iPad as I can usually do just fine with my macbook pro and my iPhone 7 Plus for when I'm away from my mac. I'm starting to struggle to find a usage scenario for my iPad.

Anyone else thinking about going back to the old lineup of just a mac and a phone?
 
In Europe a 12.9/512gb/lte is about 2000usd. Yes, we have a 2 years warranty, but still, the pricing is ridiculous. I will pay this kind of money when I’ll be able to dock it to an external monitor and use it as a regular laptop with keyboard&mouse support and a proper file system.

Nope. I loathe laptops. Daily consumption device will be a tablet. Easier to use, easier to move, easier period. I also like that I can blank it if it does something where I need to restore, it’s simple. The iPad Pro is one reason I hate large phones and don’t care for laptops. It’s lighter than a laptop, but still get a 13” screen. Simpler OS. It’s also better for my eyes than squinting a 6” or whatever screen for daily use. I use the phone for music, comms, and at the most for you tube or something while working, mostly just to listen. The phone is the mobile device so I don’t want a phablet phone. Consuming vast arrays of media on a small device like a smartphone, even a phablet isn’t my bag at all. If I’m computing, I want to sit at my desk at home or in the work office, and have multiple large screens, a full keyboard, mouse, sound, etc. I do that at home with a Mac mini. The pad is also pretty excellent at controlling the ATV, especially sending video content in Safari to the tv.

I get it, people are blowing up over these new IPad prices. Well that was me with these latest phone prices. I’m much more inclined to give Apple a grand for 13” IPP that will push 4K, is edge to edge, and all the other bs on the new one, because it’s LIGHTER AND A SMALLER FORM FACTOR than what I’m typing on now. Where is the smaller lighter phone?
I receive my new IPP on November 7th and will give them my current one an hour later via FedEx. I didn’t buy a phone this year and won’t until someone in Cupertino gets a clue that many of us don’t want phablets.

I also don’t upgrade anything every single year. That always seemed just insane to me. Old prices, new prices, not upgrading every year, foolish financially. I own a home and there is always something with the money pit that needs attention and I need to grow my investments. I used to upgrade phones every other year until this deal. IPad every other gen, so maybe every 3 years. My quad core mini runs like a top and has for 4 years.

Think it just depends on your lifestyle. I don’t get much chance to use the iPad either. My work can’t be possible on an iPad and when I’m at home or outside my Xs max can do everything the iPad can do. I also find the phone to be more convenient to use while out and about. The iPad gets used mostly over the weekend or when I’m testing something specific on it.

Yes, years back. Gave it to my daughter. Only used it to watch movies when traveling and frankly a phone is just as good. Never got on with IOS.

I would love to be able to use just an iPad pro and docked keyboard but I have to have a proper mac for work so there is little use for an iPad beyond watching netflix and a few other things. They are lovely devices but I think the only way you can justify the costs of the pro is if you are an artist of some sort. Otherwise the lower cost iPads will be just as good for half the price.
 
If I could, I would instead eliminate the Macbook Pro from my life. I feel like the laptop portion is unnecessary considering the **** quality keyboard and overly large trackpad. I'd rather use an iPad with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse but alas, Apple does not support such a setup or the software I need to run to do my work.

No way. This is just the beginning. Kids growing up now this is all they will know.

Edit/ for my own personal needs now, I only need my Mac to back up my idevices, and occasionally use google hangouts.

Other than that the PC is dead to me.

As much as I’ve enjoyed my 12.9 iPad Pro, it’s failing in ways that make me feel that the design is flawed. It’s about 6 months out of the two year warranty and the screen is developing a series of bright spots in a vertical strip aligned above the home button. People in this forum theorize it’s heat related due to the components found along this vertical strip. The touch screen keyboard is starting to stick on certain keys. It’s also feels sluggish. For all the power of the CPU, it gets slower and slower with every ios version release (not even a full fledged desktop OS.. it’s a phone OS). Factoring all of this, makes me feel that “thinner” design is not necessarily “better”, and ios is just bloated.

I’ve baby’d this device and always handled it gently. It has the apple hard shell front & back cover. If it is heat stress related over time, then I suspect it’s due to the hard shell case which didn’t allow for heat to dissipate. Apple is silent on the issue. My surface pro 4 however, runs pretty much the same as when I first got it. I’m transitioning back to the Surface, for my media device. It’s not as pretty as the iPad, and the form factor isn’t as nice, but it’s built like a tank- doesn’t have these “wonky” screen issues and has been more bang for my buck.

I never considered the iPad as nothing more than a toy, but that is probably because I do not do what some other people do, video editing, word processing, photo editing...and such stuff that makes them think iPad is just enough for them.

Each to their own. I cannot imagine doing any serious work on iOS.

I prefer iOS to macOS , so much more stable and hassle free.

When my last Mac packed up I had to resort to loads of arcane unix commands that really put me off buying another one ever again.

With my ipads I just reboot and hey presto all sorted !

Tbh I can’t recall the last time any of my iOS devices crashed !!

If youre workflow has an iPad instead of a Macbook already, there is no need to switch over. The iPad is a much more convenient device to use both in an office and on the go (standing on a train, walking down the street, etc.). Not sure why consider a macbook if what you have already works.

I'm highly anxious to switch over from my macbook to an iPad as the only device in my workflow, but unfortunately iOS/App Developers are still a way's away from allowing me to make the plunge. Im still thinking about getting a new one to play with though.
 
Quite the opposite. I’ll be ditching Macs for the new iPad Pro.

For drawing it’s a better experience than a Wacom tablet.

For photography work I’ve not been locked to the Mac since Apple murdered Aperture.

For web design work I still use coda but it doesn’t really require an upgrade to get things done.

I was curious about the Mac mini but it didn’t entice me to buy

I rely on SolidWorks, MATlab and Mathamatica. Humor me and tell me I could convert to a tablet.

Furthermore your foolish to bite into the hype that Apple will EVER make the iPad a desktop/laptop replacement. They would be killing their own MAC line sales.

They would rather have you buy BOTH.

That makes the decision easy for me, I’ll just eliminate the iPad and go with just a Plus/Max phone and a Mac.
 
Not thinking about eliminating the iPad but i'm in no rush to upgrade my 1st Gen 12.9". It does what I need.
 
Yes. Pushing out the 10.5” and probably getting a second low spec portable MacBook (maybe new MBA). I’ve tried to make iOS work for my work but it’ll never compete with MacOS anytime soon, too many compromises. Plus the price increases is giving me no further incentive to stay using iPad.
