You can already send messges to a phone number but only if they are using imessage.

10.8.2 allows you to receive messages to your phone number as well. If someone send an imessage to your phone you can enable it so that it comes to your mac ad well.

How do I do this on my mac book air running 10.8.2?

Yea, had the exact same issue. Any items that were set to launch took almost a minute to actually open. Computer was perfectly responsive after booting, but for whatever reason, they didn't open immediately. The latest build 12c35 fixed that issue for me though.

VM too? I didn't know. How does that work via OS X? Simply call the number with the OS X app and leave a VM via your internal mic?Leopard beta "Answering Machine" iChat feature for FaceTime?

What I meant by voicemail is being able to receive and listen to voicemail on your computer (either through GV's web interface, or any number of desktop apps). You can also place calls from your GV number through Gmail's web interface, using your internal mic too.
