I guess the data would be updated, but you're missing lots of features. I live in New York City, so any map without public transit information is basically useless. I realize that's pretty unique to where I live—but if you drive, presumably you'd want traffic information, and that's also missing.

Also, even before the Maps app died completely on Mavericks, I remember it displaying things incorrectly such as not marking bodies of water.

I just think it makes a million times more sense to use Google Maps as a Chromium webapp. Or maybe even the web version of Apple Maps once that's more feature complete.

meh, as long as i can get gps, navigation, and information on pois/addresses, that would be enough

an interesting discovery, if you look up a location, it can actually find them, and if you click on one, it will show a pin on somewhere in the black void. if i click get directions, it will show the safety warning after about 3 minutes as if it's about to work, but then it just says route info is not available. when i click the directions button and enter in a location, it will capitalize the name, meaning it is able to see what i am trying to look up.

Here is a copy of modern Apple Maps which will work on Mavericks. You could replace the stock Maps.app on Mavericks with this version.

Now, I totally cheated! But, can you tell?

This is not a rhetorical question. Can you tell that I cheated? Sorry for being a bit coy, but I'm interested!
thanks! what would you like? discord nitro? roblox gift card?

I'd legitimately like to know if you can tell that I cheated! :) (Aka do you why I'm saying I "cheated"?)

BTW, updated the link in my post to a new copy of the app with some very minor fixes.

also why does the large snow leopard traffic light buttons work in some apps like this but not in other ones
and is it just me or does it look like the app is slightly pixelated, as if it was designed for non-retina displays?

Some apps ship their own copies of the traffic lights, which follow the small style. You could probably find them if you dig into the app resources.

I believe the traffic light buttons are pixelated as no "official" 2x retina resources exist for them, so the 1x resources were instead resized for the modification.

Though technically, the traffic lights do exist in 2x form...

(This is Snow Leopard with "Resolution Independence" enabled. I'm not sure if its possible to extract these resources).

ah i see, i am using a retina mac

i can tell its directly from beta.maps.apple.com
Yeah, so the "app" is actually just a copy of Firefox Dynasty with a bunch of tweaks—but it's fully effective, right? I made the Apple Maps app specifically in less than half an hour. You can easily make your own too.

We can probably direct further discussion on that project specifically here, but I was trying to think of another context to show it off. I feel like, if I come out saying that it's just a web page, people assume "oh, why wouldn't I just use a web browser"—which is a fair point in itself, but having an app feels much better in practice!

Uh oh. I don't use a retina display, so I wouldn't know. Can you go to the Firefox Dynasty thread linked above and share a screenshot?

Wait we're talking about a completely different one of my projects now, right? Jazzny is mostly correct although it's a bit more complicated, but basically the mod only works fully on non-retina displays, which I need to document properly.

Just to make sure. One cannot login to the new maps app that is working now on Maverics, can he?
I’m asking just because all the saved routes and addresses that have been linked to my account and I couldn’t find a profile icon or something I could use to login with my Apple ID.

There’s an ‘avatar’ of your profile in the top right where you can log in with your Apple ID and get all the favorites you’ve saved on your iPhone synched. This is how a desktop app worked.

You've never been able to do that on Mavericks, though. And unfortunately you can't do it in the little app I made either.

BTW, I just re-uploaded it to fix retina displays and some other very minor stuff. Again, I made it with my web app template: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/firefox-dynasty-firefox-for-os-x-10-8.2446475/
