People mind it just that they have learned to live with it. 3rd party developers have been allowed enough access to give a lot of us original “don’t likers” something we might find useful. Or I can leave it blank. It is however not tied into the OS or apps like the App Library is.

What a twist of an excuse. You can easily say the same about the App Library, you choose not to use the same logic just because it means you can’t whine.

It is different. Far more invasive and tied into the app side of the OS.
iOS is starting to remind me of the early Android Home Screen days; “Don’t like it? Well we are not allowing you to delete nor turn it off. Just play “pretend it isn’t there” and all is good”.

How is it invasive? It’s a swipe away, same as the today screen. How can one be invasive and the other one not? Stating it is tied into the app side of the iOS is a crap copout. Just don’t swipe over to that screen, same as you would say to people that complained about today view.

Kind of like “oh by the way, we have added an extra set of shelves in your workshop/office that you have no control over, can’t get rid of and if you don’t like it just pretend it isn’t there”...

Workshelves in your office would be visible, lol. This is like if I built shelves you never see, unless you stumbled out an unused side door...

it's literally no different except you swipe left.

But...you cannot disable it. That's my point.

There's a page to the left of the home screen that you cannot didable. No-one these days seems to mind.

There's a page to the right that you cannot disable. "OMG Apple - you've destroyed my home screen - I hates it!"

ill try and explain it

first of all I like the Home Screen. its something totally different. I find it useful.

secondly, to me, no matter how distracted I am, I tend to know when im In the first page of apps, out of 3 or 4 pages.
so I rarely swipe left by mistake.

when im looking for an app its a common thing to swipe too far to the right. that lands me in the App Library, which instead of being something completely different, is actually just my apps rearranged in a different way. this jars and annoys me.

what makes it worse is that often when I swipe too far right, its when im one handed and distracted, and its amazing how many times I try to swipe back and it must be at an angle and I end up in the alphabetical list at which stage, im ****ed off.

plus, and this is solely personal, I can see apple being so close to what id consider nirvana. let me hide apps like you have, but switch off the App Library, and im happy as a bug in a rug.

I’m not a fan. I already have my apps organized in folders, and my folders make more sense. I don’t keep apps I don’t use regularly, so having them off somewhere else is unnecessary.

I also keep my stuff really tidy, so it bugs me that I have a page of clutter, but I’ll just ignore it.

I really don’t get this “feature.” It’s just another Home Screen with my apps organized far more haphazardly than my own folders. Like Mail goes with banking apps? Google translate, stocks, and kindle all go together? Really? This is supposed to help me?

And yes, I know people will say “just don’t use it,” but that’s not the point. You can turn off Siri, screen time, Touch/Face ID, etc. We should be able to turn this off too.
Man its exactly what Ive been asking for. Im so glad we have it.

and if that's the only choice (currently), how hard is that? i mean, i never swipe to the today page...

perhaps apple will add a toggle for the app library (altho i doubt it). either way, if you don't like it, “pretend it isn’t there”; just like you suggested.

So, to sum up your reply, if you like it and find it useful then you’ve no problems with there and being no problems with it being mandatory.

But if you don’t like it then it’s a PITA and it needs to be something that can be disabled?

It’s not redundant as you can have as many widgets as you want on that page and scroll vertically.

I'd say that if its just a case of vertical scrolling vs. swiping a page over it is redundant.

I never used the today screen really and even less so now I have the ability to put widgets on the home screen.

Would not surprise me at all if it goes the way of macOS dashboard in iOS 15.

not quite, no.

if so many people find it useful or not something that annoys them then there is no problem with it being mandatory. I haven't seen any clamour on this forum for the today view to be switched off so id guess my view is fairly common.

if its a new feature that a noticeable amount of users are pissed off then thats different.

It amazes me the number of posters here who when Apple adds something people don’t like respond with “just ignore it”.
Must be the new Apple catch phrase.
Most of the time it's a realistic approach to it all, in particular to things that don't change the existing features and how someone uses their device.

That said, a lot of the responses here are more in relation to portraying things more accurately as in a lot of cases App Library has been presented in posts as something that affects or changes what people already have and use (their normal organization of applications, folders, and home screens) which isn't really the case.

Some of the commentary addresses that the App Library can be improved (and it's still certainly might over time), and that while an option to disable it could be nice, there's quite a bit of likelihood that that won't happen (Today View is one example of that).

any of the hundred slightly different search boxes.

okay thats an exaggeration, but why is there more than one?

But how would you search for apps that you forgot you have installed?

Any phone needs to display a complete list of installed apps, in some form or fashion...

EDIT: I guess you could see/manage them all under iPhone Storage (but not launch them from there).

You’re making the assumption that people didn’t like the widget screen or dislike the App Library.

Posts on MacRumors do not represent the overall feeling over the global iPhone users.

Not everyone is going to like everything. It amazes me how many posters here hate everything Apple does but are still on the forums.

ok ill say it, "App Library: I hate it" and it i understand some people like it, but it should be optional. I love ios for its previously clean interface. i love the option to hide pages of apps, but it would be even better to hide the app library garbage. it is redundant, and useless for me.

"previously clean interface"; does your iphone not have the today screen? it's like the app library page, but you swipe to the right instead of the left. i need neither, so swipe to neither. and life goes on. problem solved!

The App library in itself is not a bad idea however the way Apple implemented is IMO. There needs to be a way to organize your apps in the library to suit your own needs and a toggle to turn it off entirely.

The way it is now it’s like someone reorganizing your desktop. It’s not acceptable. I hope Apple adds customization and a toggle.

The app library doesn’t seem intrusive on this guys set up. Check it out. I like how he did his. Seems minimalist to me

You can organize your own apps and have your own folders just as you could before. App Library doesn't change or affect that (and is basically there just to visually represent installed apps in categories that are associated with them in the App Store for essentially a hassle-free experience that can optionally be used by those who might want).

I’m sure most of us who spend all day on MacRumors have a very finely tuned system for organizing our apps. We’re geeks. That’s what we do. Either folders, search or both. We’re a “don’t move my cheese” kind of people.

That’s not who App Library is for.

It’s for people like my mom, who’s in her mid 60s and probably has 7 pages of apps. She’s never made a folder unless on accident. Her apps are in the order she downloaded them. No thought whatsoever. I’ve offered to help her organize but she has no interest.

But now she’s a swipe away from having all 7 pages instantly and automatically organized for her. It’s going to revolutionize the way she uses her phone. Going from no organization to a single, categorized page.

That’s who App Library is for.
Well, only if they USE it. My wife still has her seven pages of apps randomly placed with no organization. I’ve shown her the new iOS 14 stuff, but she’ll never use it to organize her apps and won’t use the auto-sorted folders.
