Well, the app store is disappointing to me because as some have pointed out, most of the apps are crap. I mean, why did Apple decide to limit the number of pre-launch developers to 4,000 or whatever the number, giving the impression that they were being very selective, and that the apps were going to be all hi quality....only to have most of the stuff be crap? What was the point then? They should have let more people at it, maybe there would have been a few more good apps.

They limited the number of pre-launch developers because they were beta testing the whole process of building and distributing an app. The 4000 developers were not screened in any way, it was just luck that the ones that got in did.

However, limiting the number of initial developers DID have a positive impact on the store. If all 25,000 developers could have an app in the store at launch, it would just have been even harder to weed through the crap to find the good stuff, and there would have been 200 tip calculators and to do lists instead of 20.

You could do it, there's nothing in the SDK preventing it and I don't think it's a bad idea. Perhaps this is something Apple will add officially in the future (30 day trial as part of the install of the app...if you don't delete it within 30 days you get billed).

There's nothing in the SDK technically preventing this but I am 99% sure Apple states that they will not approve time-limited software and that the accepted way to do "trial" versions is by providing a Lite version.

it has its hits and misses. I just wish they'd screen a little more logically. 6 tip calculator options is a bit ridiculous if they have better apps waiting in line. The device has a calculator, if you cant pull it off in your head what is so hard about multiplying you total by 0.20?

LOL. The only software reviews worth reading are the ones where they actually use the software and describe it's functionality etc. I don't care if person x doesn't think app y is useful from the description and screenshot. No one does. They can see if the app is useful for themselves with the exact same info. People want to know if the app is good from someone with MORE info than they have (i.e. someone who's actually used the app).
Exactly. How do you think people review software in retail stores? "I bought this app and it's great," then word of mouth. It's much more reliable.

It came out like a week ago, people are seriously complaining? If you don't want to see rubbish then SEARCH in the categories you want.

i don't even have time to sift through all the apps.....i'll take everyone's word for it about the abundance of tip calculators.

so far so good i think....it's really new. Im glad there's some games and i think this is just a tiny taste of the flood of apps coming ..

i can wait....hell i waited almost two years for the stupid phone.....

Steve needs to come in and instill a culture for iPhone development. Just like on the Mac, there's great attention to detail and focus on user interface (albeit iPhone vs Mac development is an unfair comparison).

For example, just look at how fast Mac developers took up to designing 512x512 icons for their apps. Really fast. There was dedication. Now look how many developers created Vista-style 256x256 icons for Vista. No rush. Look at the high quality of the Aqua icons themselves — how many apps for the Mac have you seen with last-minute clip art-style icons? (Ok, except Handbrake.)

Apple need to develop that culture. They need the nerds that "oh my God, that's not part of the HIG!", that forced a high standard to what we have today.

Otherwise you get... well, Windows' apps.

There are plenty of quality apps, and its only been a week

Were you expecting Photoshop?

True, but the SDK has been out much longer than that. There are some excellent apps, but the signal-to-noise ratio is low. Apple needs to be more discriminating, at least at the outset.
