I do think its a hardware (microphone) thing. As the firmware hasn't changed since I got them.
Time to clean these things and see what happens.
I actually think it might be a combination of hardware and software issues. The hardware performance degrades over time (due to gunked-up grills or whatever), and the firmware updates made the hardware shortcomings more apparent.

Maybe those who aren't experiencing any issues are just fortunate to have squeaky-clean ears. (I'm not trying to be sarcastic -- it really might be that those who have less-waxy ears also have fewer or no issues with the ANC.)

Yes a majority of people would have less wax build up.
Whether or not this is related to the NC issues is another thing...

Just to be certain. I'm trying to pair my replacement pod with my good one and am not having luck. According to the settings, one is on 2B588 and the other is on 2C54. Nothing I can do to get them both on the same firmware?

I don’t think so. When I had one need replacement a couple of weeks ago, I asked them to send both for just this reason. Support at first insisted they would pair and update just fine, but also pretty much volunteered to send both pods.

No you can’t because you can only increase the firmware version and not downgrade it. The 2c54 is newer than the 2b588 but it isn’t available anymore so you are stuck. Congrats to Apple.
Someone should sue them and make a very big noise for this!!

Ok, quick update. Both pods were on different firmware, but after leaving them on the charger near my phone and resetting the Airpods, they paired together. Here's the kicker: they're both on 2C54. I thought it was pulled, so how did this happen?

One AirPod can update the other.

I can`t force mine to update. It needs some time. I will check again tomorrow.

Woke up to this surprising news, but also woke up to find only one AirPod’s paired to my devices...Ignoring/re-discovering & restarting iPhone didn’t help.

I’m in a motel with dodgy wifi, so maybe that’s why....hopefully things kick in later...
edit...

Ok both AirPods now detected (disconnecting from the wifi helped)...& I notice now the firmware’s updated...Testing imminent!...

It hasn’t got worse and unless it’s my imagination there seems to be a slight improvement for ANC

I have heard blu tac isn't the best as it pushes the wax further down rather than removing it

Dip the toothbrush into the alcohol bottle?

The reason why I'm asking soo many questions is that I've never spent that much on headphones so I want to make sure I look after them and they last me a couple fo years at least.

Dont ever clean them with alcohol. There's a reason Apple says to only clean with water.

The water resistance in the AirPods functions because the surface tension of water prevents it from seeping through the tiny holes in the grills. Alcohol does not have surface tension like water, and it will get inside your AirPods and has the potential to ruin the MEMS microphones inside.

BlueTak is a much better option. Ive examined mine under a microscope after using BlueTak and it absolutely is not pushing anything down further. They are perfectly clean afterwards.

what are the steps to update the Pro's? Still on th e588 version

Plug them into the charger, open your iPhone, open your AirPods to make sure they're connected. Then, just close the case and leave them charging near the phone for about 20-30 minutes and they should update automatically.

Mine updated and they are a bit better in the NC category..... seem to suppress more of the middle frequencies I was hearing before. Volume at 60% (where I normally listen) and the my music seems a bit fuller. FWIW is does better than the 2C54

If anyone wants to opine on sound quality before and after, please be prepared to share data, not feelings.

I wish Apple would make a way to downgrade and test the differences. I tested the NC with my headset over the APP and I think it is a bit worst than before, not catching a "static" bass sound and cancelling more noise on the right ear than on the left.
