No, the goal of the EU law is to reduce waste, reduce discarded and obsoleted chargers.

Also, but the main goal is indeed to create an universally compatible connector for all users, so they aren't depending on proprietary ones.

Of course, a connector is only one part of a charger. There are other strict specifications imposed by the device itself.
It wiil be more universal as an inteface connector to another device, like a computer.

Hopefully this does not mean that future microusb to hdmi adapters suffer from increased latency and compression like the lightning to hdmi adapter. It is essentially wired airplay, while mhl / slimport adapters offer lag free / superior video out similar to the old 30 pin to hdmi adapter.

Lightning was a downgrade for video out

This seems like miniaturized reversible USB, are we sure this is really interchangeable with lightning?

There is no way apple will switch from lightning, I agree they will just pack an adapter

It isn't misleading in any way. It is similar to lightning in that it is a universal plug, orientation independent and adds high speed data transfers over multiple paths.
The key to this is Apple will eventually have to adapt this sort of plug, because of EU law. By making this connector similar (albeit inverted) to lightning, it will ease Apple's transition by not requiring a complete hardware redesign.

That said, wireless charging is still the way to go. It is so simple to just set my Nexus and Lumia devices on my Tylt Vu wireless Qi charger. No constant plugging and unplugging or accidentally pulling the charger out of the phone when I forget it is plugged in.

Not really. Every phone including Apple's will go to the USB type C standard. So one plug for all.
I am not so sure about that. If the EU is going to force them to use the new USB type C standard....knowing Apple they will take forever to comply then will do so ONLY in the EU. Or just include an adapter with every device to comply. Apple doesn't exactly go along with the crowd.......they rather make the crowd go along with them.

Normally I don't get political, nor do I want to turn this thread into a political bickerfest, but this makes me chuckle. I'm so glad some of the big governments of the world are focused on the important issues. Not famine, terrorism, or Ebola. Nope, cell phone chargers :p

Apple and Lightning port wins - USB Type C now finalized

You'll have to explain, I'm totally drawing a blank on your post.

This Samsung charger, illegal. Its a pigtail and not microUSB.
You can't use it with any other phone. When the user gets a new phone, he has to throw this away. Trash.

This charger has a standard USB A port. Compliant. You can plug many different charging cables into it. If you get rid of your iPhone, and a modern Android, you can keep using it with appropriate cable. Not trashed.

They still need Micro USB though, right? So the Lightning cable isn't trashed?

Im already doing that since i dont use a iPhone or a iPad.

Never got a wireless charger for my N5 either. Maybe one day but just dont feel the need to spend for something i dont really care about.

Haha. Good job! Now, put Nano Sim cards in all devices going forward. Enough with these Sim adapters.

Super excited about this new, Type-C connector.

More excited in fact, then about any other upcoming technology. Hopefully this gets adapted quickly by all industries and remains used for at least 8-10 years.

Everything about this connector sounds great!

Looks nice, small and symmetric
10Gbps
Reversible in both connection and direction
Designed to replace all USB ports
Will allow for much thinner laptops and other electronics
100W - Can be adopted to be a charger port for laptops

And we have Apple to thank for this, them pushing the lightning connector out made the USB organisation catch up. I hope Apple never stops innovating, cause the whole industry looks for what Apple does, and if Apple doesn't do anything, nobody else takes the initiative it seems. Just look at the 64-bit processors.

Nope. Not part of MOU or EU interest.
Cable is minor, doesn't have the complexity. Easily recycled.

Wrong

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_External_Power_Supply

"A common EPS must include a cable with a Micro USB-B connector for connecting to a mobile phone."

You're completely incorrect. I have no idea why you think this is true. They don't even care whether it's a pigtail or not, they just want Micro USB on one end and USB A on the other if it's not a pigtail.

LOL you read wiki.

"The Commission does not have evidence that Apple has breached the agreement. The iPhone 5 can be used with an adaptor allowing it to be connected to the common charger."

The common charger, being one with a USB A port.

Thank Apple? They were the last to adapt to a smaller connector that is now the lightning connector and they still use a regular USB connection on one end.

I believe there is actually an adapter that is attached to the lightning b end that converts to USB

Or easier, you use a USB A to microUSB cable... Rather than buying Apple's silly pricy adapter.
