For what it's worth, being disappointed in this, still wanting to upgrade my iPhone 7, I decided to go look at my Android options.

Not really very enticing. Unless I want to join a race to the bottom.

I really want to move my phone over to USB-C and get away from Lightning… but even if this is not enticing, there's not as much competition as I would like. Really, the most competition with this phone would be another used iPhone. Or just stick with my 7 until it fully dies and/or the last Lightning cables are finally splitting to oblivion.

EDIT: Oh, so this does have USB-C? That's… slightly more enticing.

You lost me at "they say", especially when talking about their own modem vs a 3rd party one
They don't need to exaggerate their own chip that is not sold to others. I also heard this about the M1 chip when it came out, that the performance claims just couldn't be true!

My iPhone is an accessory to my Apple ecosystem, not the hub. So I'll probably pick it up to replace my 2021 SE(2), but planning to keep it five years, not four.

I don’t remember Apple advertising any product as budget. This is a description attached by others. Consumers who are truly seeking budget devices will never consider new iPhones.

I mean, Apple's front page emphasizes the price specifically and only for the 16e. If there are no price-conscious customers to target, are they just guessing with this model…?

The device is also equipped with an Apple-designed 5G modem is the most exciting bit.

Edit: For people laughing or disagreeing with the comment – seems like this iPhone gives 3 hours more battery life, compared to the standard 16. I assume most of that is because of the Apple's modem. And there's a potential for this to be even more noticeable for devices such as the Pro Max, where the battery is larger.
Yeah all the people that disagree don’t understand that Apple has to start somewhere to field test their in-house modems and this is their best opportunity.
Also this leads the way for a future where Apple laptops have mobile data because they will have found a way to do it „the right way“. It’s the same people that doubted Apple Silicon, or at least they make the same mistake.

Omg, nearly 800 USD in Europe. Yeah, I don’t know anymore… I hope there are still refurb iPhone 14. Sounds like a better phone for a lower price if you don’t care about “AI” and can deal with the Lightning port.

I’m pretty disappointed to be honest. Been waiting for such a long time and then they ask 800 USD for their “budget” phone…. ☹️
Agreed. I’m happy I had to pull the plug to get a new phone last autumn when my 11 Pro died. I’d much rather have used this used 15 Pro from eBay than be disappointed right now and basically do the same thing.

Now that’s what I call evolution of the SE. What an amazing spec’d entry level iPhone. Perhaps $100 over priced though. At $500 it would have sold like hot cakes and probably damaged other iPhone sales.

There is nothing amazing about the iPhone 16E except the expensive price tag!

This feels like a phone targeting families and corporations. $200 savings is big if the user is 12 or 13 years old; also big savings if you're buying these in batches of 1000s, hell even 100s. None of those users are going to have strong, meaningful preferences either way on all these trade-offs, and Apple gets to trial the new C chip.

Coming from an SE3 will royally suck on this

It's taller, wider, thicker and heavier than an SE3

The quad-fecta of "ugh"

View attachment 2483865

Hmm…

Less than 1/4” taller.

Less than 1/5” wider.

Only 2/100ths of an inch deeper!

Less than.8 oz heavier! Negligible. Less than a first class letter in the U.S.!

Bottom line: Very similar in all dimensions to the iPhone SE 2022!

Now, if you wanted to compare it to the original SE, I’d concur, to a great extent, with your marvelous crack: the “quad-fecta of ugh!”

Compared to the original SE gem, this is one “big, bloated” phone! 😂

Well it’s nice that lightness has been eradicated from all of Apples main devices and it’s a nice start for them to ship their own modems and it’s OLED, which is great for most people.
Also Touch ID has to die.
700€ were I live is crazy though I got my used (badly scratched screen) 15 Pro for only 50€ more.

Wow, $600 with only 128gb. Nursing my 2017 SE with only 32 gb. Was hoping it would start at around $450. Might look at used phones….
