no wifi 7 :(
The one thing I was really hoping they would add. Was very surprised to see it wasn’t on the new Pro iPads, then missing from the new Mini, and now also missing from the new MacBook Pros. Why the hell did they include on the new iPhone but not on these devices is beyond me. If the argument is that most people don’t yet have a WiFi 7 router, why include it on any device? Very disappointed.

Umm - like I said before the iPhone 16 Pro’s already have WiFi 7, so your statement is false. Again - makes no sense.
It makes absolutely sense. We talking Macbook Pro right?

Why can't you get the Max in a Mac Mini? If the cooling in the MacBook Pro is sufficient you'd think the cooling in the Mini would be too (even the new tiny one). Probably to help them differentiate the Studio (and charge extra for it).
They could probably put the Max chip in a Mac Mini, but I don't see how that would make any sense. It will unnecessarily constrict thermals for the chip and it won't save any significant cost or price.
The bigger Mac Studio was made to give the higher performance chips more thermal space to stretch their legs (and more expandability). A laptop has to compromise thermals, but a desktop doesn't, so why cram it in a Mini?
Again, it won't save significant cost (compared to performance loss). The chip itself is expensive so it would increase the cost of the Mini toward Studio prices, at which point it won't make sense to choose the inferior-performing Mini.

So after 2 generations of Pro and Max having the same CPU part, and 1 generation where the Pro was seriously nerfed compared to the Max, now the Pro is closer to the Max again, but not the same. I wonder what drove this decision.

But what about in 2 to 3 years when people are still rocking their $4000 M4 Macbook Pro, and WIFI 7 is defacto??? It's a huge dissapointment considering the iPhone 16 supports it.
Defacto doesn't mean "lesser" WiFi will stop working.

I use Wifi 5 in my house. But then again only things that can't be wired are WiFi

Hm.. M4 Max 32 gpu no ram config, only 40 gpu can go higher. Wanted 64GB, only way now with M4 is the higher Max chip.

M2 mac studio can be configured up to 192GB... M4 max is two generations forward and is on a pro device.. why cant they at least match that. With AI building use case memory has been pretty crucial

Hmm - we are. So, Apple updates iPhone 16 Pro’s with wifi 7 and not any other new devices. Wow - great for you if that makes sense, but absolutely makes 0 sense to me. Just baffeling. Don’t now one other person I talk to that it makes sense too. 🙂

Just to clear things up. It does NOT make sense to NOT upgrade the MBP with Wifi 7.

They do this cause they want people to upgrade again in 2025 when they do add it.

Damn, the M4 Max (low) only supports 36GB memory. For comparison, the M3 Max (low) supported up to 96GB. Apple is really squeezing people to upgrade to the topmost spec to get more memory. What's even crazier is the M4 Pro in the Mac mini can be configured to 64GB memory but in the MacBook Pro the M4 Pro is limited to 48GB. Why??
Power/cooling would be my guess.

Interesting comment. When companies like Apple start producing more WiFi 7 devices that will make people like me upgrade to WiFi 7. I am sure others would agree and would upgrade to WiFi 7 too. I think anything Apple releases now should be WiFi 7. Makes no sense that iPhone 16 Pro’s are WiFi 7 capable, but all the new devices announced this week are not.
Exactly! Makes no sense whatsoever. When the new iPad Pro was released I almost bought one until I saw it was still wifi 6e. Then I considered the new Mini until again saw wifi 6e. Went to bed last night thinking for sure would be included in the new Macbook Pro, but nope. Not buying anything without wifi 7 at this point.

I feel like you've answered your own question here.

The Max draws more power / produces more heat than the Pro. And they have just the solution for that: the bigger case in the Studio.

The Studio is arguably a worse deal right now, but that's mostly because the mini has literally been upgraded yesterday, and the Studio not in 16 months.

As for the MacBook Pro, it has more internal volume.

I got the m2 max 16" with 96gb and 4tb second hand for 2800cdn. Hoping to see benchmarks on m4 max as trade in value for my model on apple store is 1500$cdn. Eek. I like the large screen and performance all the same and so far so good. Importantly is the battery efficiency with the new chips.
Also waiting for benchmark and actual use comparison between M2 Max and M4 Max.

I reckon I'll upgrade my 16MBP m1 max when they do a fresh base design, 2x performance is amazing, but currently I feel as the performance is pretty transparent for my workload, I.E. i don't have to wait for most tasks to complete as is. when we get to 3-5x performance then were talking upgrade time !

Could be yield and cost differentials.

I imagine the Pro being a chop of the Max for M1 and M2 was always a stopgap approach.

For M3, they decided to give the Max more power, but due to yield issues, had to reduce the cores on the Pro. (Yield issues wouldn't affect the Max as much, because it sells in much lower numbers.)

For M4, the yield is much better, so they can fix that part as well.

Like 4 people in the world are set up with WiFi 7.
Probably quite a bit more than that, there are cheapish routers and mesh networks available now.

Also, as you're going to be using this computer for a couple of years it would be nice to not have your laptop be the limiting factor,

Finally - the iPhone 16 has it. Wi-Fi 7 is a lot more useful on a computer than on a phone.
