But you do not run a multi-billion dollar international company. No one on this forum cares if you are gay or not.
Interesting point. I actually thought of addressing that in greater detail, but chose against so I could focus on different, less-covered aspects of “closet issues”. You know, there are a *lot* of different closets, not just the better-known sexual orientation-related ones. Check this video to get a sense of what I was getting at:

But since you brought that up…
I did address it in part. Truth be told, even leaders from contries full of bigotry and hate, don't really give a fsck as to whether the CEO of the world's most powerful company is gay or not. Seriously!
Consider the following (for now, unlikely) scenario: if the USofA had an hispanic transgender woman as president, do you seriously think that, in the international diplomatic theatre, she would be routinely or even occasionaly denied proper head of state treatment? Maybe by some rogue terrorists like ISIS, where not even a more “conventional”, heteronormative official would set foot anyway, sure, but not by, say, the king of Saudi Arabia. You know it to be true: money and/or raw power really speaks louder than anything else.
The only incident I've heard of in my country, Portugal, was when the Pope, while visiting the country, refused to meet with both then Prime Minister Sá Carneiro and his partner (they were both divorcees, so they couldn't remarry in a catholic ceremony), to which the PM responded by (rightly so, if I may add) *not* attending the formal reception at all… But those are the exceptions that kind of prove the rule; above a certain social stature and bar a certain degree of religious fanaticism, it really doesn't matter either way.
Anyway, keep an eye on the latest rumours that the iPhone is about to be deployed (heh

) in Iran, and on the latest retail foray Apple is making into Turkey. If the first goes through and the latter doesn't stall, my theory will be partly proven right. Oh, and do you seriously this will keep the chinese nouveau-riche from buying Edition Apple Watches and russian magnates/mobsters from buying Feld&Volk gold-modded iPhones? Think again… And keep an eye on their website.
As for the reasons why Tim did what he did and when he did it: did you even read the damn article? The cat was pretty much out of the bag long ago, so if coming out could bring both a net human *AND* corporate/economic benefit, why not do it anyway? Do you seriously think this wasn't at least discussed within the Apple Board? If Tim is as much for transparency and full disclosure (when appropriate) as he is, he certainly must have brought it up, and the math certainly added up, too. Apple does, indeed, do “the right thing”, but mostly when it serves its interests; fortunately for us all, not only is Apple the largest corporate behemot in the whole world (meaning, it can get away with taking this kind of stands just fine), but the latter and its people also already evolved enough that Tim Cook got to do it right now.
I, for one, know a lot of affluent gay people who may dump their Android devices sooner or later, and they will most certainly make up for the sales to some bigots that Apple *may* lose to their competitors.

As for the people who may get some respite and hope from knowing for a fact (in these cases, rumors alone don't quite cut it) that one of the world's most powerful people, who runs, as you said, a multi-billion dollar international company, is actually gay, I'm very happy for them…
