"According to the report, Apple was told during the recent discussions that the new rules are needed to crack down on online scams, pornography, and the circulation of information that violates China's censorship rules."

It's really only the last item that the Xi and the CCP leadership are concerned about.

Will Apple comply?

What is the betting that these new rules that require apps to be registered with the CCP will have a little known caveat in the registration documents that give the CCP the right to access the servers of the app developer so they can gain access to users personal data, things like name, banking info, email address, phone numbers, home address.

Apple may be “concerned” but they will submit to China’s draconian laws. When you are doing business in a totalitarian dictatorship you play by it’s rules or else.
It’s the same in any country, totalitarian or not. Rules (laws) are not optional.

The only people who want to post negative things about “muh Chicoms” are westerners. The extreme exception does not make the rule for Chinese people in China. The Chinese government is popular in China. You people need to get real.
All sociology is rubbish in authoritarian countries. What does it mean “government is popular”? It means nothing because no one would say otherwise.

Seems like a good time to start allowing side-loading of some apps. We’ll remove the apps from the store, but now users can download them online.

Good Ol' US of A
A thought occurred to me....certain social movements have been trying to implement this kind of thinking in the UK and US the past couple of years to massive backlash....

Are....are the communists trying to turn the West authoritarian again?

Nobody is talking about your western internationalist concept of sociology. Popularity is determined by a real government taking real action to uphold and improve the standard of living by a wide margin. Take a good look at 1930s Germany as another example. What has the disgusting American west done to improve the standard of living for normal Americans in the last thirty years? Build 2 miles of high speed rail on the east coast? Lmao.

Why? Amazon.com is always selling US Apple gift card. Or you also can’t access Amazon.com?

Ah, 1930s Germany: the pinnacle of a government upholding and improving the standard of living for its people...unless you were Jewish.

Not weird, great firewall doing its magic. Sometimes macrumors just doesn’t load fully so I can read but cannot post.

Oh that. Yeah, I also sometimes need to load a VPN to load the reply box but I think that's less a function of the great firewall and more a function of the intentionally-limited bandwidth in/out of the country (which VPNs seem to help with, like grabbing on to the back of a moving freight train...) - I have experienced similar phenomena in the early days of iCloud (unusably slow in the mainland, worked beautifully in Hong Kong) and more recently the other way when travelling to the UK, uploading stuff back to China was just impossible on my parents home internet - had 100s of photos that just didn't upload to iCloud until we got back.

I wonder, at what point, will Apple find the “courage” to stand on its principles of privacy and leave China altogether?
Apple gets almost 20 percent of their total sales from China. For Apple's 2022 fiscal year, net sales in Greater China was $74.2 billion. As of July 1, 2023 (the end of Apple's 3rd quarter for fiscal 2023), net sales in Greater China stood at $57.475 billion.

If Apple's willing to sell their principles of privacy to Alphabet for between $15 billion and $20 billion a year to make Google the default search engine, Apple's not going to leave the China market. Ever.
