Nice but I don’t use subscription software.

What software do you use?

im not a fan but I need to use the software/apps, so I use subscription software
‘If you have found a way around it, I’m all ears! I have DaVinci, but something tells me we’re close there. I don’t use AVID/Pro-Tools, but I pay for Adobe’s suite, FCP and Logic - as well as another dozen apps or channels, etc.

genuinely curious!

I don't think the new Final Cut Camera app will work with Final Cut on Mac out of the gate. If it did, Apple would make sure we knew about it (they don't seem shy about hiding big things like that). But I agree – that capability should and probably will make it to the Mac. And Apple will likely expand the number of cameras that can connect. Apple loves cross-promotion of its products, and this is a great reason for a small studio or creator to purchase even more iPhones.

The other Final Cut for iPad feature I really want to see come to Mac is dynamic music tracks, but Apple likely knows we're getting to the point where we can choose the kind of sound we want and AI will build a custom track per project. Eventually, you'll be able to import your footage and describe to the AI what kind of project you want it to build ("Magic Edit"). Then you'll get a fully-edited trailer or mini-documentary or promo-video using the footage you input.

Why wouldn’t it? Continuity camera was set up on iOS for a better web cam using the killer camera on the iPhone, and that’s it?
I think CC was the ‘test’ for using a multi-cam setup on either macOS or iPadOS using, specifically, iPhones and iPads. It wi connect with the iPad with FCP camera (eventually) and already does so with the Mac, I think it would be absurd if it wasn’t ready when the iPad software is.
If I understand what you are saying in your fir paragraph.

Any news on Final Cut project file compatibility between Mac and iPad? Like for starting a project on the iPad, continue working on it on the Mac and then finishing it back on the iPad again.

that’s been the case for a while, I believe since day one. You can go either way. From Mac to iPad and/or iPad to Mac. :)

FCP X, Logic, Affinity, Pixelmator Pro. Only on Mac. Not only because I can work more efficiently on a Mac but also because it’s ergonomically better.

Yeah that would be good. It difficult enough doing this on the Mac when you don't have the same plugins on each computer.

Wow, took them how many years for implementing a basic feature like working directly on an external storage instead of the internal
This is game changing. The absence of this feature is the reason why I haven't used my M1 iPad for video editing.

I shoot on my iPhone and transfer videos to an Samsung T7 which I use as a dirty drive. I plug it in to my m1 mbp and edit straight from the drive.

Raw files, rending files and export file can sometimes total to 100-150GB which I don't have room for on my MBP or iPad. Therefore, the ability to edit from the drive is essential - especially as an NVME SSD cost £50 which is a peanuts compared with upgrading to an iPad or MacBook with more storage.

Now, all that's missing is a Final Cut Pro iPad version that I can pay for outright and own indefinitely.

The fact that the presentation was shot on iPhone BLOWS MY MIND.

We have some POWERFUL tech today, folks.

Take a second and appreciate it.
While you are right that our tech has gone a long way you can't really ignore the fact that it's very probably an iPhone and a lot of professional lighting and rigs that probably cost multitude of what the iPhone does.

Yup. Ansel Adams shot with a camera that you could make today from a shoebox.

But he had an extremely in-depth knowledge of light, f-settings, composition and all the other things that go into making a good image. He could probably shoot with a first gen 15-year old iPhone and with decent lighting rigs and tech crew support make a video that slams. Would probably spend a couple of years getting to know the iPhone camera well first, though.

What would be awesome is if the new app supported multi-camera timelapse and offered more control over the timelapse settings. I shoot a LOT of timelapse on my iPhone and would love the ability to use multiple devices for multiple angles in a less cumbersome fashion (currently using Skyflow). Particularly would be nice to allow a mix of timelapse and non-timelapse footage.

Definitely preferred. Or at least bundle all the apps with the Apple One subscription without increasing the price.
I don't want to learn how to use FCP only to be annually creamed with price increases. I hate vendor lock-in through subscription.

This is why I use Filmora Wondershare on my m1 mbp. I own version 12 out right. Version 13 launched but it doesn't include features that I need or will use. Therefore I saved money by not upgrading. If you are a subscriber you fund new features add bloat or that you might never need.

As nice as Final Cut Pro for iPad is - without having the ability to open a project from the Mac and edit them both interchangeability I just cannot use the iPad version.

However this is nice progress for the iPad app.

The Final Cut Pro Camera App looks amazing.

Apple today introduced a new version of the Final Cut Pro software that's designed to run on the iPad, introducing capabilities designed specifically for the M4 iPad Pro.

A new Live Multicam feature allows users to capture up to four different angles of a single scene using connected iPhones and iPads. To make this feature work, Apple has created a Final Cut Camera app that captures video from each of the devices and feeds it into Final Cut Pro.

Users can get a director's view of each camera in real time, and the settings can be adjusted from the Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 app. There are options for tweaking exposure, focus, white balance, ISO, shutter speed, and zoom to get the perfect shots. Preview clips are passed through to Final Cut Pro and then replaced with full-resolution files so users can quickly move from production to editing.

Final Cut Camera is available as a standalone app and in addition to feeding footage to Final Cut Pro, it can be used as a video capture app for recording video with precise manual controls.

The updated Final Cut Pro for iPad app supports external projects, so users can create or open projects on an external device and import media without taking up iPad storage space.

Apple added additional customization options to Final Cut Pro, including 12 color-grading presets, eight basic text titles, 20 soundtracks, and new dynamic backgrounds.

With the M4 chip, final rendering with Final Cut Pro is up to 2x faster, and it supports up to 4x more streams of ProRes RAW than the M1 chip. Final Cut for iPad works with the Apple Pencil Pro, adding support for barrel roll and squeeze, improving access to and control over tools.

Apple has also updated Final Cut Pro for the Mac, adding Enhance Light and Color, an AI feature that improves color, color balance, contrast, and brightness in one step. Smooth Slo-Mo, another new feature, blends frames of video intelligently to provide higher-quality movement.

Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 will be available this spring as a free update for existing users, with new users able to purchase it for $4.99 per month or $49 per year. Final Cut Camera will come later in the spring as well, and Final Cut Pro for Mac 10.8 will be available as a free update for existing users.

Okay, new iPod Pro is what we need. I don’t want to buy multiple iPhones. iPod Pro, please??!!

I'd just recommend buying a bunch of used iPhones for cheap. The new Final Cut Camera apparently works with models dating back quite a few years.

Wait, when did Apple start charging a subscription for its software? For years I have argued that the Apple tax on hardware is worth it because of the incredible value you get from the software. If Apple starts down the Adobe path, they’re going to lose a lot of love from longtime users and evangelists—a very shortsighted strategy methinks.

Apple has been charging for the "pro" apps (FCPX, Logic Pro) for a long time. When they release FCPX and Logic Pro for the iPad last year they switched to subscription. The macOS apps are still a perpetual license model. I personally think this was a poor decision. But if Apple is going to use a subscription model, they should approach it like they do Apple Arcade, AppleTV and Apple News. If they are going to start dinging us $5 or $10 a month then I expect several new pro level apps and updates to become available every year.

If they update the software as often as their computer counterparts, there’s no justification for the monthly price. Even more if the updates become as lackluster.
