It's my opinion that the main motivation of adding FW to the Macbook was to support old iPods. Since those have been converted to USB (for some time now), there isn't as much of a need in the new MB.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but that theory doesn't seem very logical.

The iPod has been a fad for over 7 years now...
People keep saying that, as if it somehow proves that the iPod isn't a fad.
Do none of you remember the Walkman? That was a fad that lasted years and years and then suddenly died down.

It if was not short-lived, then it's not really a fad, is it?

Well, that depends how you define "short lived". Even ten years is a fad if you look at the bigger picture.
It never died down; it simply evolved...into the iPod.
Almost true. We went around minidisc and so on before. But if you notice, the Walkman was a Sony product, the iPod an Apple product. So you - likely unwillingly - just supported my view that it's a stupid idea to rely entirely on a few fashion statements - or fads if you will - in the long run as the people buying will be moving on to the next big fad soon enough.

Ok, how would you define it? And "the bigger picture" being what? The existence of the universe?

No, it would be "the goals of a company in the long run" – so it would be in the context of the future life of the company. Apple is no Sony, although they try their hardest by using propretary formats and hardware solutions, so they cannot make up lost money in other categories. Especially not if they continue to focus solely on the iPhone and iPods and the crowd buying them.

Enlighten me. I'm impressionable. Your DV argument doesn't make much more sense.
Like I said, we all have opinions. I've already posted numerous times in this thread, but just to briefly summarize:

The MB, which beats the snot out of any PowerBook and is consistently faster than a dual core G5 tower, provided a small, capable on-the-go editor for any format that would work well on a FW400 drive (such as DV, HDV, DVCPro HD, XDCAM HD, etc.,). Take away FW400 and you hamstring it's functionality. The MB, like the 12" PB, was a very good balance of power and portability but it proved to be too popular, stealing sales from higher-end products, so Apple had to take action.

Honestly, their Blue Ocean Strategy is working for them. I know many, many people who have switched to Mac's. They are all considered consumer level, and many of them have the Macbook. Most of them not only do not use Firewire, they do not know what it is. I think their decision was based on the fact that many CONSUMER LEVEL CUSTOMER'S do NOT use Firewire. No matter how disappointing it is, it was something extra for many people that they never used, that took up space. They took it out, not only for that reason, but they also needed to differentiate between the consumer level and the pro level machine. That is why i believe they took out the firewire port, because many consumers (which means people who do not check macrumors like it's their job, if at all) do not use/know what it is.

Not trying to upset anyone, just my 2 cents
Then why do so many "consumer" Windows laptops now have firewire ports? firewire was removed from the iPod at a time when firewire was very much missing in the Windows world. Now a very large percentage of Windows computers (both desktop and laptop) include firewire as standard. Maybe Apple is trying to differentiate themselves from the Windows world by doing away with a port that is quickly becoming standard for everybody. Now that it is standard Apple wants to do away with it. Genius!

I am not sure, but, I do know that many people who do not know much about computers (i.e. people who dont go on to macrumors, much less post) do not even know what firewire is, nor do they have any devices with firewire, everything is USB 1 or 2. Not saying that it is better, but that in my experience, most people who do not know much about their computer (use them for word, email, and putting pix from their camera on) do not use/know anything about firewire.

Actually, looking at the new "consumer" laptops (the lower end ones), companies this year have gotten rid of FW on those as well...

While looking at Dell, people are so bent on this FW thing, I looked at their new Studio Hybrid (kinda their Mini) and that no longer supports VGA...

Display
No Monitor (System includes DVI and HDMI ports. VGA is not supported)
