The now discontinued M1 MBA was such a great machine.
Basically just took everything everyone loved already and swapped a way better Apple chip in there and left the rest basically untouched.

To me it then became more mixed. The wedge got ditched, they now have huge feet and a notch .. the material seems different to the touch, etc, etc
The current designs are substantially uglier and less pleasant to hold, though the return of MagSafe is a boon.

True, but how often do you need the most current MacOS? I understand the security concerns but can’t that be addressed by sticking to good safety practices (e.g.; don’t click links, only download legitimate software from legitimate sources, etc).
You only need a newer macOS when SaaS stops supporting it, think browsers, Office etc. which is usually 2-3 years after it stops getting the latest OS from Apple.

The M1 Air is such a popular workhorse, I think it can get the latest macOS in 2028. Maybe even 2029. Which means plenty of modern third party software support until 2031.

Apple today discontinued the MacBook Air with the M1 chip, which launched in November 2020 as one of the first Apple silicon Macs.

In the U.S., the MacBook Air lineup now consists of the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip starting at $999, the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chip starting at $1,099, and the 15-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chip starting at $1,299.

For more details about the new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models with the M3 chip, read our coverage of Apple's announcement.

Still such a great laptop ever since its launch date. Incredible value for many users.

The good thing is, MacBook Air M1 will still get updates for at least 10 more years.
Even though Apple no longer sells it, it's still the cheapest and best MacBook sold at retailers.

At least 10 more years?
What makes you say that?

For example, the latest version of MacOS Big Sur was released last year in 2023.
The 2013 Intel MacBook Airs and Pros support MacOS Big Sur.

The M1 MacBooks are way more powerful and they use Apple Silicon, not Intel.
It would be very strange if Apple supported Intel Macs longer than Apple Silicon Macs.

In about 7 years, the M1 MacBooks will get vintage status, but they will still be updated for many more years after that.
