That sucks. I used it a couple of times for some larger purchases. It was nice to have and it was the only way I could have bought the items I did. All my payments were automatically sent.

As soon as they made it reflect on your credit report I dipped. Instantly killed the product.

Honestly I always wondered what the point of this is. If you use your Apple Card, you end up paying for your stuff later, so isn't it just duplicating functionality? It was a confusing product and made no sense. Who is it for?
People who can't afford to pay for a thing in-full upfront and don't have a CC, or just don't want to use it. This is more people than you think.

Well, notionally, part of the whole idea of these sorts of installment BNPL plans is that they’re supposed to help build credit, and that can only happen if it does get reported to the credit agencies.

This is a good thing. Being a loan shark doesn't fit with their corporate branding really.
Do you mean doesn’t fit with their “Dealer” like behavior. Psss… Go ahead… Try 3 Months of Apple Music you’ll like.

Hah, initially misread this headline to mean Apple was going to "later" discontinue Apple Pay -- which would be a pretty huge thing!

edit: just saw the comment above mine. Maybe this headline needs another look 🤔

Miss read this as discontinuing Apple Pay and thought oh no.
Yeah, the editor should have put quotes around “Apple Pay Later” or made it a little less succinct in the name of clarity. Alternatively, maybe MacRumors is trying to keep traffic and engagement up now that WWDC is in the rear view mirror!

Delinquencies must be off the charts.
Most likely. I'm honestly not against BNPL in general, but baking that feature into the OS where everybody sees that payment option on every purchase probably made it way too easy for a lot of people to make bad decisions.

Easy come, easy go.

Will you let me go?

Bismillah! No, we will not let you go (Let him go!)

:p

Apple need to get their act together and stop releasing Apple Pay features that are US only. With all due respect to my American friends, you guys don’t even use Apple Pay! It’s shocking that you can’t even pay in almost any restaurant in the US with it. It’s shocking how low the adoption is. In the UK for example, the adoption rate of Apple Pay is practically 100% of all iPhone users. And it’s accepted everywhere. I can pay for a Michelin star meal as well as any local restaurant with Apple Pay.
Fret not.

Soon everyone will be paying for everything via a centralized digital currency.

“Cash is King” which is why it will be ripped from the hands of the people.

Currency must be controlled in order to have total control.

I liked being able to split up a larger purchase into four interest free payments. Payments were automatically made, so there was never an issue of a late or missing payment. It was just nice to not have all the money come out of your account at one time.

So funny,

Here people are buying expensive devices and then they need to "pay later" for something else more useful.

Perhaps they see a disturbing trend emerging. Either way, I didn’t understand the point of it — payments spread across 6 weeks, so you basically pay over 2 billing cycles?

What’s worse someone paying $6.50 for a cup of coffee or purchasing it on installments?

I realized years ago when McDonalds started taking credits cards that it was all over, that “They” had won, and we would be drained dry.
I don't really see that connection per se. The fact that they accept credit cards is benign on its own. It is what people do with the debt they've incurred after that is the issue.

For example, we just use a points-accruing card - Apple Card on all Apple purchases because of the 3% - on all our spending that isn't tied to recurring bills: groceries, restaurants, other needs, and discretionary purchases. The key thing is we stay cognizant of our spending and zero-out our balances at the start of each month.

If you can stay disciplined, the credit card issuers are basically giving you free money just for making purchases you were going to make anyway. To me, it seems silly not to use credit cards for this reason alone. However, there are other legitimate security protection reasons to prefer a credit card to a debit card tied to a bank account with your own liquidity. For example when using debit cards it may take days after a fraudulent transaction is identified for your money to be returned to your bank account. This can vary from institution to institution but you can have confidence your real liquid cash on hand is not held hostage by a credit card fraud dispute.

In any capacity, Apple has no business being in the financial services sector.

I know it's become a trite almost default retort, but Jobs really would be spinning in his grave.

Only happens under a soulless beancounter like Cook.
