Hi All,

So I recently viewed the latest and greatest AD from Apple. The one with the girl saying "What's a computer". I'm not an Apple hater by any stretch but this is flat out a lie. The Ipad is a pure
entertainment device for 90% of the population, much less a computer. It's sad they
are trying to market it as a computer. It's no more a computer than an Iphone..

I use an iPad as my laptop replacement (not even the Pro. Just a regular iPad) and I’ve made entire presentations, drafted long documents, even done some basic Adobe work with my iPad with Adobe Illustrator Draw and Comp CC.

You can definitely replace a computer with an iPad, depending on what you need to do. I do have my powerful desktop where I do more intense work such as my video editing or heavy Photoshop work, but for 70-80% of the stuff I do (productivity-wise), I can do on my iPad.

My mom ONLY has an iPad Pro. Nothing else. She hasn’t needed an actual desktop computer for anything since.

Um, the iPad and iPhone are actually both computers

And the point of the ad is that traditional desktop computers and mobile devices are blending in use to the point that the lines of distinction are blurred
It is no longer about the device itself but the user experience and the productivity of the device

As long as we are throwing out made up statistics ("entertainment device for 90% of the population"), I would say 90% of what most people do on their desktop computer can be done on a mobile device - email, text, browsing, YouTube, Netflix, Facebook and other social media, as well as document creation and editing and such, even photo work.

What exactly is being falsely advertised. They are not showing it doing things it cannot physically do. 90% of the time I use my iPad more than my MacBook. My MacBook is just more convenient for school.

Seems like the girl in the ad did a fair amount of content creation to me (vs. using it as a pure entertainment device).

Maybe that's what Apple's advertising about...

However, I sold my MacBook Pro and traded it in for an iPad Pro.

1. Banking

2. Internet

3. Pages

4. GPS

5. YouTube

6. Translation

7. Memos

8. FaceTime

9. Notes

10 find my car

11. Drawing with the pencil

Etc, etc

Less costly and does everything that my MacBook Pro and then some more. And yes for your information, “some” people use their iPhone as a computer and the only computer they have.

i thought the commercial was great at demo'ing that the iPad can be used as a creation tool. I use my iPad 2 Air for lots of things that are work related. From taking meeting notes including embedding photos of whiteboard collaborative drawing. Scanning and annotating business receipts that i submit as PDFs to accounting.

Actually it is a computer - looked up the definition and it fits.

Where did you come up with the 90% statistic? Sounds made up, that is you're projecting your opinion on everyone else.

I think the catch that OP and countless others suffer from is that the workflow can be different. But what you say is true, I have only a tiny handful of tasks that I can only do on my MacBook, while I do the rest easily with either the MacBook or my iPad. 1 of the first issues people have to overcome is jumping into the cloud. Since the file isn't sitting on your desktop, you need to be able to pull it into any app as needed. Once you get it into iCloud, that problem is instantly solved.

It’s not a computer in the tradional business sense as maybe an iMac or MB Pro might be used for. But a computer nevertheless, needed to power the entertainment functions. But OP has a valid perspective.

IMHO though my 10.5 has pretty much taken over as the device of choice over my MacAir and my 27” iMac unless I really need the heavy lifting.
Just remember that you phone has more computing power than old big blue that helped the space program...

Geez, talk about missing the point. The whole premise behind the video is that we've moved beyond a point where we need to think about our devices as either full-fledged "computers" or functionally inferior mobile devices. Thus the line, "what's a computer?" We just have devices that help us accomplish the things we do.

I will say though, that as a "do everything" device, the iPad still falls short for me. I love my MBP and couldn't give it up.

That is a pretty narrow view of the world, in my opinion. Just because you view something as 'not a computer' does not mean the rest of the world does.

Quick lesson my daughter has taught me:
My 'old person view' says that typing a minimum 500 word essay would be more easily accomplished on a computer ( MBPr15 ) than an iPad.
She replies, 'Challenge accepted.'
She completes the quick 'report' on a book we've recently read together in less than half the time it takes me. Both of us used Pages. She can thumb type faster than I can type ( I currently type about 50-60 words per minute, at one point in my life even 70wpm ). She can position images ( one of the stipulations, two images embedded in the text set ) just by dragging and dropping, quickly resize and rotate. Not quite as easy or fast on a MBPr.

Different view:
I have seen toddlers tapping a magazine cover, attempting to 'open' the pictures in the printed text. The world is changing. We don't have to keep up, but we should at least keep an open mind.

Something to ponder:

90% of statistics are 'made up'.

I would disagree that he has a valid perspective. "The Ipad is a pure entertainment device for 90% of the population, much less a computer." His perspective is that for 9 out of 10 users, the iPad is solely an entertainment device. There is no data to support that and in my own experience with many other users over the years, that estimate is not even in the same state, much less in the ballpark.

What's your definition of a computer?
People can use a web browser (chromebooks) as a computer. The iPad is a computer.

For 90% of the population a desktop or laptop is a game machine, email device, web browser, photo viewer, word processor. iPad does all of that just fine.

And have you seen some of the $199 junk that Win makers are selling. I'll take an iPad Pro over any of those 24/7. Agree there are some things where a traditional computer is vital. But most people don't do those kind of things.

Even video editing.... I have 256 Gb 2017 IPP 12.9 and use LumaFusion for video editing. It’s laid out exactly as the professional video editor I used at a TV station for news called Velocity. That’s a full broadcasting level editing program and LumaFusion does nearly everything it does. I say nearly because I don’t know how to import multiple audio tracks on one video (but they did post in a recent upgrade that it’s possible to grab from multiple separate audio tracks so it might be operator error). I actually prefer touching the timeline now as opposed to using a mouse and can edit just as fast. Storage is not a problem either as I also have an external 4Tb Western Digital My Passport Wireless Pro Drive and use File Browser to interface everything and link the drive to files app so everything seems seamless now. I have completed a full half hour documentary in full HD on iPad Pro and it can also work in 4k. Check out LumaFusion!

I just recently found that I could also link my wireless FileHub and attached HDD to the Files app with FileBrowser.

Edit: Using similar linkage, I was able to export a processed photo from Lightroom Mobile to a hard drive on a Windows PC on my network.

I thought the point was we've moved beyond school work

Impeach Tim Cook, it's the only way to stop these atrocities.

LOL funny :)

I've rarely mention the word "computer" when referring to an Apple product. Its either a Mac or iPad or iPhone vs computer or tablet or simply phone. Anything that compute is a computer. We have 'computers" in our cars. I can see the iPad as extension of a MacBook aka Mac aka Computer aka PC because you can dongle it with an external drive, a SD card reader, print, etc You can even draw and mark up PDF like MacBooks did back in 2003-04.

Thanks for telling me about LumaFusion. It looks a lot like a mini FCPX. Do you know how well it runs on the A9 iPad?
